Dream of ours to stay in a Ryokan for our first time in Japan. Glad we chose Motonago. One of the biggest reasons was because we had our two kids 10 & 12 with us. The room with private garden was perfect for us. Best and most surprising part was the food. The traditional Meals were fantastic and for the...

I lived in Chichibu, Saitama 20 years ago where I taught ESL at companies and at a chugakko. Back then, my dream was to take the Shinkansen to Kyoto and stay at a ryokan. Unfortunately, that dream was pricey plus was saving $ for grad school. Twenty years later, I am booking a trip to realize my dream. And now...

Excellent ryokan style lodging. The staff is superb and will bend their backs to accommodate you. The hotel is nearly 100 years old, so the bathroom facilities are limited and shared (for some rooms). We were a group of 9 - 5 males, 4 females. The staff split us into male and female rooms, even if some were married. I...

We really enjoyed our time at Motonago. The food was very delicious-- we had kaiseki at an onsen in Hakone and it was a bit too out-there for my likings but this kaiseki was much more accessible. I was thrilled the second night we also had choices for yaki-- you could choose between sukiyaki and shabu-shabu and we got our...

The ryokan was beautiful and in a great location. The rooms were simple and very traditional. Having dinner and breakfast in the room was a very special experience! The staff was attentive, the meal service was fantastic and the food was very traditional. After dinner your beds are set up in place of the dinner table. The floor mattress was...

Stayed here for a night with partner and 16 year old. We had 3 rooms- one for the two of us to sleep in, then the room where we ate and a 3rd smaller room where 16 year old slept. From the start, the staff here are absolutely wonderful. They welcome you in the foyer, give you a tour and...

Me and friend arrived in Kyoto mid morning and headed straight to Ryokan, very pleased that they are ok for us leaving our bags with them while we go sight seeing before our scheduled check in time. The location of the ryokan is convenient - so close to all the important things you need to see and do in Kyoto....

The Lonely Planet guidebook said that this ryokan had the best location in all of Kyoto, but I only realized how right it was once we were there. The opportunity to take early morning walks on quiet, old beautiful streets that are packed during the day was very special indeed, as was the chance to see neighboring Kodai-ji temple spectacularly...

4 people, 2 nights, 1 impression: much more than adequate, a bit less than perfect. The staff were very pleasant and attentive, the futons comfortable, and the location charming. The food tended towards average, though, especially breakfast. The baths were great - what a way to unwind after a long day or prepare for the new one. The best bit...

Great location, great service, great food We stayed @ Montonago in Mar 2016, had a great time, the Ryokan is right at the heart of the tourist area, and on the path of Kyoto Hanatouro, it was great to be able to tour around beautiful Kyoto at night, go back to Ryokan, enjoy the onsen and amazing dinner.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Motonago hospitality With Kyoto flavor a homy feeling. Motonago nestles in a quiet, nostalgic scene, completely apart from the hustle and bustle of the city. Once you step outside, you can sense the overflowing taste of Kyoto - Japan's old capital. All the charm of Kyoto is gathered here, where Motonago stands. On entering through a door with a tiled roof while seeing a tasteful earthen wall made using traditional techniques, Motonago welcomes you with a warm hospitality that only a humble inn like ours, with its 11 rooms, can offer. Guests can relax while enjoying dinner and breakfast in their rooms, and our staff wear traditional kimonos as they serve the meals. Kyoto style cuisine made with special seasonal ingredients succeeds in bringing the Kyoto taste, with our chefs' sophisticated skills and selected menu, to our guests. ... more   less
