Great location, great service, great food We stayed @ Montonago in Mar 2016, had a great time, the Ryokan is right at the heart of the tourist area, and on the path of Kyoto Hanatouro, it was great to be able to tour around beautiful Kyoto at night, go back to Ryokan, enjoy the onsen and amazing dinner.

The Motonago is a great place to take your family. The hosts are easy going and had no problem accommodating us. We were always taken care of and any little mistakes we made (shoes/meal ordering) were kindly accepted. The room was perfect, meals were fantastic and the whole experience was beyond expectations.

Motonago is an older ryokan, but it's well maintained and clean... The staff and service make up for any physical shortcomings, though... Meals (Japanese style) were very good and ofuro (hot baths) were very relaxing... And the location was ideal... This may not be the newest, most attractive ryokan in the Gion area, but it has to be one of...

We were on a 2 week trip in Japan, traveling with another couple and I was the only one who had been to Japan before. Had 1 night in Kyoto and wanted to show them an authentic Ryokan experience and Motonago delivered! It's not the Ritz or Four Seasons, but definitely is right on the mark for a traditional ryokan....

I'm by no means an expert on the subject, but since it wasn't it wasn't my first time in Kyoto nor in a ryokan, I already had some expectations about Motonago. I have to say that all my expectations were completely surpassed. It was an amazing experience! The location is awesome! Being in the middle of Gion and right next...

Had an incredible stay. As we walked in the front door, the exquisite service started. The staff is amazing. The dinner, served in your room, is impeccable. The communal bath is a great experience. You have to book ahead of time for 30 minutes increments. When we got back from the hot bath, our futons were out and ready for...

We were a family of 5 and decided to stay in a traditional Ryokan for one night during our 2 week trip to Japan. Are we ever glad we did! Montonago was in a very convenient location and even though we arrived early, they were able to hold our luggage for us and even provided some recommendations for exploring and...

We had a lovely stay at Motonago, it felt very homely and is in a great location for exploring Gion and the temples in the surrounding area. We enjoyed the Japanese breakfast and dinner and private onsen. What a great experience overall.

Our first time in a Ryokan did not disappoint. The location of Motonago was great for access to Gion corner, the JR station and Pontocho. Inside the Ryokan, the cultural etiquette of the onsen and the room were thoroughly explained by the excellent staff. This really was the icing on the cake for our trip to Kyoto!

We really love Motonago! We stayed 2 nights at Motonago for our honeymoon, and we can't get enough of it. Everything is just perfect for us. The location is perfect. The room was very clean, tidy, and super comfortable. The service was outstanding and very personal. And we love the food as well! We will definitely come back!

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Motonago hospitality With Kyoto flavor a homy feeling. Motonago nestles in a quiet, nostalgic scene, completely apart from the hustle and bustle of the city. Once you step outside, you can sense the overflowing taste of Kyoto - Japan's old capital. All the charm of Kyoto is gathered here, where Motonago stands. On entering through a door with a tiled roof while seeing a tasteful earthen wall made using traditional techniques, Motonago welcomes you with a warm hospitality that only a humble inn like ours, with its 11 rooms, can offer. Guests can relax while enjoying dinner and breakfast in their rooms, and our staff wear traditional kimonos as they serve the meals. Kyoto style cuisine made with special seasonal ingredients succeeds in bringing the Kyoto taste, with our chefs' sophisticated skills and selected menu, to our guests. ... more   less
