it's a decent place to stay, the bed is a bit short (but that's almost everwhere in japan). reception staff speak sufficient english and are extremely friendly. breakfast place on the groundfloor is good value for your money! Location wise it's a bit in between the sites. nothing is "around the corner" but most things are on walking distance. bus...

I booked four nights at the Sunroute Kyoto on Hotels.com for the cheap price of $89 a night. The location is good - not far from the train station and walking distance to Gion and Kawarmachi areas. The room was small but adequate, it was very hot and slow to cool down via the thermostat. The bed was soft with...

Only one night in beautiful city, it gave me bad experience. Booked for a non-smoking, got a smoking room with broken air-con. When asked for help, what we got is a fan. That's the only solution this hotel can give you. If the temperature outside is lower than 18C, air-con will be heater - centrally controlled. Location is good with...

My husband and I just went to Kyoto for about 2 nights during the Easter break and we found the customer service of this hotel impeccable. They were courteous, willing to help out and always had a smile on their faces. I also found most of them spoke really good English which was very helpful to us!!! There are two...

The hotel is in a good position as it's close to Gion and the commercial area. Ten minutes bus from Kyoto Station and ten minutes bus from the main temple area. Gion is the perfect area to spent the evening walking near the river, full of nice restaurants and places to go. The room is good and clean, the service...

Had a few nights here on business. I have stayed in a few Sunroutes around Japan and this is one of their best. Very central location, 5-10min walk to Kawaramachi shops and 10-15mins to Gion. I feel you get what you pay for in Japan; roms are not massive unless you pay for 4-star or above, but clean, comfortable and...

The room we stayed in was a little dated but had all we needed for three nights stay - comfy beds, tv, broadband connection and not too cramp. In fact if the hotel would take some of the furniture out if would have been more roomy - the sofa was not really needed. The location is very good as well...

We chose the hotel because of its location, but the rooms were very cramped, even for a hotel in Japan. Next time, we'll stay elsewhere.

The Sunroute chain in Japan is very reliable and the Kyoto Sunroute was a good choice. The room was small (no surprise there) but very well set up and the staff were most obliging. It's an easy walk up to the main shopping area at Kawaramachi and the train to Osaka is close by. The Italian restaurant on the hotel's...

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighbourhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
