Europeans should not be put off by Japanese style hotels as this one offers very good size rooms with the option of a separate onsen style bath complex. We had a big balcony overlooking the river which provided lovely water sound effects at night. Easy access to central Kyoto by subway, train and bus (number 5). Subway station is about...

This small hotel is located in the Northeast corner of Kyoto, alongside a river, and most rooms have a mountain view. There's excellent transportation available. There's a train 2 minutes away, Shugakuin station. The bus stops virtually in front of the hotel. And, the subway, Matsugasaki station, is just a couple bus stops away, or one base fare in a...

Our family always stays at Apical Inn while visiting Kyoto. They have clean rooms and real treat is seasonal ingredients dinner! Pay extra to get special dinner meal in advance. It's worth to get upgraded room with private balcony bath. Small gift shop and quiet sitting area rounds out this perfect place to chill before hitting temple city.

We stayed at this hotel on the Japanese style room ( tatami). The room is big and clean. They come every day to set up tatami for us. Breakfast is very good, again mainly Japanese style but with all the usual western items. Staff are nice but their English skills are limited. The hotel has big Japanese style bath (One...

Good breakfast and tatami-mat room for two. The place was a bit too far away from city center, thus we were not able to spend the night in town until late since public transportation would end at 11.30 pm. The place is a good bargain, but expect no extras!

I stayed here recently for about five or six nights. It's comfy enough though I smelled cigarette smoke in my room. The staff is exceptionally helpful, though I'm not sure if they speak English. I speak Japanese and found them wonderful. It is located fairly far north of the city center--nice and quiet but a bit a hike or subway...

We happened upon this hotel after finding ourselves without lodging in Kyoto during the seriously crowded cherry blossom festival this April. We were lucky. Not only is the place affordable, the rooms are spacious, clean, and airy, and if you are really lucky, you will be situated on the river side of the hotel and treated to the soothing sounds...

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighbourhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
