This ryokan is the best introduction to Kyoto because the staff speak English, they are very helpful if you want to know something and the ryokan is in an excellent location a little north of the downtown shopping area and within walking distance of several metro stations. The ryokan serves Japanese food for breakfast and dinner so one has an...

Can't say enough good things about this place. Friendly staff, affordable, good location in an artsy neighbourhood, (optional) tradional Japanese breakfast, very clean and spacious rooms, delicious free tea, cheap bike rental service. In two weeks in Japan, we slept ten nights in ryokans and four in hotels. The hotel rooms were hotel rooms of the type that could have...

I just got back from a trip in Japan and I'd say Nishiyama is highly recommended for people planning to be in Kyoto. Clean rooms with futon, air-con, ensuite bathroom. But the bathroom was small I didn't even try it. The communal bath is much better. Spacious and clean with all necessary amenities. I spent most of my time there....

We enjoyed staying at Nishiyama Ryokan very much. I suspect that unlike other traditional ryokan's, this one is more comforable because it has more modern facilities such as room air conditioning, TVs with included ensuite bathroom/shower, in addition to the communal bath. The communal baths were clean and spacious. They have two communal baths, one for men the other for...

Me and my girlfriend travelled to Kyoto for 3 nights and stayed at the Nishiyama Ryokan. We were very impressed. It is located in a very accessible place (on the Tozai line, which links right down to the Karasuma line. The staff are extremely helpful, and our room was very comfortable. The best way to describe Nishiyama is a "Ryokan...

The service was wonderful and friendly. The entrance area provided an old inn feeling and if you let them know around when you are arriving the innkeeper is waiting outside in a kimono to greet you! Although the structure that houses the rooms are modern the rooms themselves are just like a ryokan...as soon as you step through your door...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
