Our group of 24 used this as a base for 6 nights and really liked it. 1) friendly, accomodating staff 2) very nice room (maybe upgraded since the last reviews? 3) at a subway stop, 20 min. walk to downtown, $6 cab to city center, 5 min. to major temple site with shops and cafes nearby 4) Manager, Herr Suter,...

Public areas are nice, has an old fashioned spacious feel, the room we had was small, tired, a bit grubby and had windows I've not seen since being at a poorly built 1970's comprehensive school annex, they barely closed properly. Definitely not worth the money.

Fairly ordinary western style hotel seemingly stitched together from a number of separate structures. Lobby level service is more western (i.e., detached) than we've experienced elsewhere in japan. Breakfast buffet is extensive, although uninspired. Rooms are comfortable, but could use an upgrade. The bathroom setup in Jr, Suites is tiny and not really designed for more than one guest, although...

Shuttle was convenient. Location near a metro stop was helpful. Easy to walk to a variety of sights on the west side of Kyoto. Good location. Very nice room, clean, nice view, spacious. Nice bathroom and shower. Overall very satisfied. Very polite staff.

While some reviews say that the hotel is run down, shabby, and tired, we did not find it so. Our room 6030 had a view of the mountains, Kyoto, and a Tori gate. You could walk to shrines and temples. Get a map of the Philosopher's Walk then take a taxi to the top to see the Silver Pavillion and...

We were given a room in the old wing of the hotel (after walking through at least four or five hallways - it seemed like a maze!) and the room was on the small side. The decor was dated - cream-colored wallpaper that had begun to peel in some places and was dinged with black marks from luggage. The carpeting...

Very run down decor. The furniture in the small room was worn out. The wall paper was water stained. For a Westin Hotel this was a big disappointment. Not worth the money at any cost. Go to another hotel

Situated in a quiet area of Kyoto, close to temples and Philosophers walk. Rooms small and unimpressive. Hotel is quite old, but charming. Shuttle service to the centre and train station is very convenient. Overall a good experience. I loved Kyoto!

I went to Kyoto with my husband and brought my mother with me - booked a special deal directly from the Starwood/Westin website. Room: From our rooms, we had a view of the Japanese style cottage/villa - also available for rent if you can afford it... The rooms were spacious for a hotel in Japan, with separate soaking tub and...

Staying in City Center

Neighbourhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
