I choose this hotel since I can check in 12 PM! I arrive at KIX 8.30 so I actually arrive in Aoi So Inn 11-11.30 PM and the owner is very nice to let me inn since my room is ready. It's great thing, since I can rest a little and have a nice shower. It's easy to access the... More

Aoi-So Inn is a ryokan-style hotel geared towards backpackers etc with a common kitchen available. For various reasons I selected the 1-3 person room with its own bath and enjoyed the room very much. There was even a separate small garden just for this room! I am notvery tall (172 cm) so I usually fit in with Japanese size things.... More

Quite a good surprise for the very low expectations. Only for one night that was quite an adventure but it turned quite a good surprise. Except the location and no breakfast available this was a quite good experience and the owner is very nice and helpful.

We loved this hotel, the owner was freindly but didnt speak too much english, the room was large and traditional. Even had a little Japanese garden! The sleeping arangements were fine and the futons comfy. The bathroom was small but perfectly fuctionable (be aware if your heavy set though!). The communal kitchen was really pleasant too Awesome if you are... More

As expected a traditional experience at a great price. Best for preople less than 178cm (5'10"). Convenient to subway and Howdy's grocery and neighborhood restaurants. Shared kitchen w refrigerator, hot water, microwave, etc. Congenial hosts too!

I had a tatami room with bathroom. The room was had a high external window, but no window with a view. A share kitchen was down a long corridor. The owner was friendly. The establishment was rambling and rundown, fine if one is looking for a "warts and all" experience of traditional accommodation. One would be mote comfortable in a... More

Friendly hotel manager, but our room was full of bed bugs what we recognized very late at the end of our stay. It was so awful, they were crawling around during the night, and in the morning we killed some of them, and they were filled with our blood!!! Ugh!!! When we alarmed the hotel manager, he did not seem... More

We spent a few nights at Aoi So Inn in June. We were looking at a cheap, no frills but clean accommodation during our stay in Kyoto. This Ryokan seemed to fit the bill; we made sure we packed some earplugs as the previous reviews mentionned the thin walls (and indeed some nights were not that quiet) and set off... More

Stayed here for 3 nights in March 2012. Although we arrived very late without calling, The Owner was welcoming and very helpful (he speaks Spanish and English and after showing us to our room, he accompanied us to his local ramen shop for a late dinner with us). The room was nice and comfortable once we had the heater running... More

Three of us stayed in a Traditional Japanese Tatami room with an ensuite bathroom. The Inn is situated in a residential neighborhhod close to the subway as well as one of the two central bus stations in town. In addition, it is close to a number of nice temples. This is a "no frills" inn, but is clean and comnfortable... More

Staying in Nishijin District

Neighbourhood Profile
Nishijin District
A district with a long textile heritage, ancient Kyoto is still alive in the Nishijin District. Studded with its weaving factories, tea houses, and onsen, the neighborhood is charming and peaceful with a self-possessed air. Less traveled than other parts of the city, it is a district where you can take it at your own pace. Visitors can explore the many weaving and cloth houses, the free kimono shows, and the many shops selling traditional clothing and goods. Showcasing architecture with sloping roofs and wooden reliefs dating to decades past, the streets in the Nishijin District transport you back in time, making them a joy to wander.
