We stayed here for one night only in a Japanese style room to experience traditional Japanese culture. After many hours of searching, we settled on this ryokan based on a number of good reviews and we were not disappointed in the slightest. We dropped our luggage in the morning and returned at check-in time. We had the keiseki set dinner...

Warm welcome with light refreshment and a small toy for my son. Room is very neat and clean, newly renovated I think. Our booking came with dinner and breakfast. I am very pleased that the staff who made last minute changes for beef sukiyaki for us as my husband doesn't eat fish. Good portion and quality. My son also had...

Let me start by first saying this review is written by someone who has previously lived in Japan (six years), and although now back home in NYC, I frequent Japan several times a year, and have been to countless ryokans and onsen hotels. I mention this because I’m a bit more attuned than the typical tourist as to how the...

If you're looking for a tradional ryokan experience in Kyoto it would be hard to beat Matsui. The location is perfect. Steps from Nishiki Market, a short walk from Pontocho Alley, a longer walk from Gion and a short subway ride from Kyoto central station. Unlike Tokyo the mass transit options aren't as easy or useful, in Kyoto. We used...

Matsuri Honkan is a nice ryokan. It is in a cute area with a lot of small streets and shops/restaurants and just 2 blocks north of Nishiki Market. It can be a little confusing to find the ryokan at first. Recommend getting off at the Karasuma-Oike station, take station exit 3-2 (which is also where the elevator in the subway...

Stayed for one night in May with our family. Upon arrival, the communication with the hotel was excellent. The Ryokan has a beautiful onsen and is located in central Kyoto, close to the Nishiki Market. The rooms was nice and clean. We had both dinner and breakfast, and the food was absolutely delicious. If I have one complaint, it is...

Re: Location Perfect - literally just steps from Nishiki market and Gogoyo (popular ramen spot) Re: Room A bit smaller than we thought but it was efficient and enough for our party (4 adults, 1 toddler, stayed in a suite/bigger room). Our toddler had loads of fun in the room though. Re: Facilities and Amenitites The public bath can be...

We enjoyed this traditional Ryokan tremendously and would return to it. They did the kaiseki dinner in a special room for six of us. Next day breakfast was in the main hall. Our rooms were well appointed, the public onsen clean, water real warm, relaxing and soothed us to a good night's sleep. The food was very traditional and enjoyable.

Chose this ryokan for its location which is within walking distance to most things. Some nice shopping is just a block away. I say no thrills because this is more like a small hotel (with lifts) than a traditional ryokan. The rooms are traditional with tatami and Japanese breakfast in room was a fantastic experience for the kids to see...

this was our first trip to Japan, and I wanted an authentic ryokan experience. I think that we had that at Matusui Honkan. it is a truly special place. it's perfectly located close to the Nishiki Market, which is endlessly fun to explore. we opted for the kanseki dinner and it did not disappoint- several courses of thoughtfully prepared, delicious...

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighbourhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
