We have stayed at the Martha several times One person that we observed as exceptional was our breakfast server, Joshua Fearing. We were there the day before Thanksgiving and the dining room was overloaded with customers. He and one server were the only staff and he handled a difficult situation with grace and high energy. Making sure everyone had what they needed. I think the Martha is so lucky to have someone who is so passionate about serving people. Any employer would be so blessed to have an employee like Joshua
From Reservations to Check-in to departure, this was a Fabulous Stay. My wife and I loved the History of this Classic Boutique Inn. The Staff was Outstanding and very service oriented in every aspect of our stay. The room was spotless, we loved the History throughout the Hotel. The Libary was one of our favorite rooms, warm, and had so much knowledge of who stayed during the last 100+years. Each Staff member was Gracious, kind, and caring. Our Meals were Fabulous and felt very special. Our Bellman was extremely knowledgeable and helpful for our day trip to the Creeper Trail. A beautiful time of year and not crowded. We have traveled all over the U.S. and Europe [e and had the finest stay in many years. We are returning with our Adult Children in the Spring and staying longer. Thank you for such a Fabulous Staff.…
For years the Martha was the paragon of old world graciousness and charm. Having returned this time it was shocking to discover how ONE seemingly small change can ruin the aesthetic of a place, and here aesthetics count for everything. The owners have blundered in their recent upgrade of lighting throughout the hotel, replacing soft and warm lighting with harsh, white/blue LED bulbs everywhere. And right down to the chandeliers! It is lighting suitable for an industrial warehouse NOT a classic hotel. And to the extent that lighting creates a mood and complements wall colors and furnishings, the effect is one big clash of dissonance. Nothing or no one is enhanced by this cold lighting design. The owners should cut their losses and return warm LED bulbs, for what's been done now is befitting of a Holiday Inn, not the Martha Washington.…
Went to Abingdon for my wife's birthday. And - where else would you stay on a special occasion in Abingdon. Got a great midweek rate. Yeah - there is some age showing - but - it's still The Martha. Room was on the 4th floor - so we had a flight of stairs to travel from the 3rd floor. It was comfy. Comfortable bed and serviceable bath. Plus - very clean and quiet. The amenities are what sells. Free hot breakfast. Port in the lobby at 8. In the middle of downtown - within walking distance of the Barter - restaurants - and shops. Heated pool and outdoor hot tub. Fitness center with modern exercise machines. Free parking. Free WiFi. The service is non-stuffy - but very efficient and friendly. The property is huge - with an abundance of rooms. I made our reservations several months in advance. Midweek is great time to visit - because I understand that weekends can be filled with tour groups, etc. There are plenty of brand motels outside of downtown. But - none have the charm of this Ol' Lady! We're already planning our next trip.…
Our family (2 boys, ages 10 & 12) stayed 2 nights so that we could do the Creeper Trail. The Martha was quirky, but great. The only negative thing was how unwelcoming reception was upon arrival. I think it was a fluke though, because overall the service during our stay was good. I was pleasantly surprised by the family room - great layout! Sisters - the atmosphere, the service, and the food was excellent. The Martha offers bikes and shuttle service to the top of the Creeper Trail. The shuttle and the driver were great. He offered to pick us up in Damascas if we only wanted to bike half the trail, which is a nice service. We choose to bike the entire trail (we left on the shuttle at 9am and got back to the hotel at 4:30, so it was a long but great day). This hotel has one of the nicest hot tubs I've ever seen, which is very nice after biking all day.…
We spent three night there recently to dine and go to the Barter Theater. Only one issue I with they would address. The Wi-Fi is completely open, o password required and that troubles me. Adding a password would make it safer. I hope you do. I could not find a way on their website to tell them this.
Poor Martha Washington - she's getting a bit raggedy. At one point this was THE place to stay, but it has declined rapidly in the past few years. Neither the owner nor the staff seem to care about the place. The "spa" needs the health department to take a look.
My husband and I have stayed at The Martha over the years, but it has been a while. We were very pleased with our room in the Garden Wing (king bed with separate seating area). All staff were very friendly. The plated breakfast which is included with your stay is quite enjoyable. The grounds had changed somewhat since we last stayed, so we enjoyed walking around and playing a round of put-put golf. The location is superb for walking anywhere in Abingdon, which we did. The Highlands Festival was occurring during our visit and was well attended and enjoyable.
Anyone in the hospitality industry should take a class from Joshua at Sister's Restaurant! The food is outstanding and the service even better. All of the waitstaff was great, but Joshua truly enjoys his job and it shows. Looking forward to returning to The Martha!
First vist at Marthja. We were assigned room 401 and told that there was only one flight of stairs. In truth there were 3 flights after taking the elevator one flight up. Wife is 71 and I am 80 but in exceptional health. This room should not be assigned to seniors. Decor of room was asian? that is out of place with abingdon culture. Remove free breakfast from room rate and make it less expensive. Being told that I must eat what managment orders for me is not good business. Servings were too small. Also, we had two guests for breakfast, and I was charged $36.00 for each guest for a meager breakfast. i Believe that I was overcharged! Alsso, My guests were made to feel unwelcome by the staff. I love historical places, but including all taxes & feesm paying $345.79 per nite isat least $100.00 too much Gene Dorsch 480-231-4994…
