Makenna Resort has a unique design concept of the beach hotels in Brazil. Modern architecture, with refined minimalist feature, reflects the delicacy of the ocean ambient. Lights and colors make the place into an incomparable experience to the senses. With only 16 exclusively equipped bungalows, Makenna offers individualized service. The restaurant with balcony and sea view invites for a complete breakfast. The delightful culinary offerings also please guests who come with a healthy appetite.
Stayed only one night at makenna but now i totally regret it. I should have stayed there for the entire duration of my trip to ilheus and itacare. The chales have a stronv design element but with the right balance to make you feel extremely confortable. The doors open completely and the only thing you see is coconut trees and sea, not a bad way to start your day! Service is impeccable and very friendly and you must have dinner and drinks at the hotel! The chef is very creative and cooks bahian classic dishes with a lot of love and flare.
You will sleep with the sound of the waves hitting the shore. It is a truly magical place!

The hotel is new (June 2010 opening according to what they told us) and should be a lot busier, but I assume it is due to a lack of reviews/awareness of the hotel. Having traveled a lot in Brazil, it is one of the better hotels you will find along the beach - and equally important - it is one of the few that is not overcharging its guests for the food and accomodation. If you are looking for an intimate/upscale on the beach option, this is a great one. A few notes - there is not a town attached to the hotel nor any activity at night per se, so, if you are wanting to venture out, you will need to have a car or arrange to be driven, etc. But you will be hard-pressed to find better food or drinks.
There are a lot of small trips to different beaches, etc that you can choose to do - but the beach in front of the hotel is excellent, so, it is not needed if what you are looking for is to enjoy the waves, water, sand, etc. and have a relaxing and wonderful vacation.

One of the best boutique hotels I have ever stayed at. The bungalows are huge and very well decorated. The food is amazing. We did not leave the resort (except a long walk on the endless beach) for three days and had all our meals at the restaurant. Just try any dish and you ll know what i am talking about.
Its quiet and peaceful. Definitely try it if you want to chill for a few days.

This is quite possibly the best hotel we have ever stayed in...and we have been to luxury hotels throughout the world. We stayed here for 6 nights and wish it could have been twice as long. First, it is astonishing architecture. No surprise that it has won major international awards. Second, the individual bungalows are huge...really like having your own house. Third, the interior decorating is remarkably tasteful and simple. Fourth, the setting is magical. A completely isolated location on the ocean surrounded by greenery. Fifth, the pool is gigantic and beautifully maintained. Sixth, the beach is gorgeous....you can walk for many kilometers in either direction and not see another person. The sand is a perfect consistency for long walks. The water is clean, warm and has a nice surf that is not too much and there are very comfortable resort beach loungers and shades steps away from the waves. Seventh, because there are only 16 bungalows, the whole setting is wonderfully intimate and quiet while giving you great privacy. Eight, the food is superb, mostly local Bahian dishes with lots of elegantly prepared seafood and other meats and fabulous fruits and salads, not to mention amazing desserts. Ninth, the service is pitch perfect. Staff are almost invisible yet everywhere constantly anticipating your most minor needs...towels and water bottles appearing magically when you are at the beach or pool, multiple cleanings a day that make the bungalows immaculate and all public spaces looking incredible. 10th, and finally the owners are truly gracious and friendly and genuine care about each and every guest and have wonderful personal touches you have to experience. We feel honored to have experienced such a place in our many travels.

We stayed here for 5 days as part of a 2 week holiday in Brazil and would say it's the best hotel we stayed at. The resort itself is quite isolated - 30min from Ilheus and about 50min from Itacare - so we ended up just relaxing by the huge pool. There were also some little gazebos on the beach - there was no one around so you really felt like you were in your own private paradise. The villa was very spacious and the bathroom by far the best we had in Brazil. We had nearly all of our meals at the hotel and they were all very good with a great breakfast. The only comment I had is that they could have a few more snack/salad options for lunch as we didn't always feel like a big meal. The staff were very friendly and tried to be helpful even when they couldn't understand us - in this part of Brazil it's very difficult to find anyone speaking English. Thilo (owner) was extremely helpful in writing down a few key phrases to help us get around in a taxi to Itacare and Itacarzinho. They also arranged a tour to Lagao Encantada for us through a local travel agency. There are no TV's in the rooms which actually ended up being quite nice - even though we are TV addicts! For a really restful break this is definitely the place to go.

Amazing architecture, great spacious bungalows decorated with taste, delicious food (best we had in brazil) and outstanding service. I don't want to spoil the surprise(s) for you but I have never experienced such attention to detail and thoughtfulness. You think of it, and Makenna would have already done it for you. We had all our meals at the hotel and everything we ate was just delicious and very nicely presented.
Very highly recommended if you're looking for a relaxing experience.

"did not really see other rooms aside from the one that we had which was the mid-level option. we actually had taken the least expensive room and then they moved us up to a better room after we arrived due to availability."
There are more places to choose from in the Ilheus area.
