Mata N´ativa Pousada is an ecolodge of charm very well located walking distance to the village center and to the beach. It was created in an environmental-friendly concept respecting the existing trees, the local ecosystem and wild live. The owners succeeded in developing this small hotel where you feel overwhelmed by nature. Triage of products, recycling, solar panels and energy system control, are part of our initiatives to lessen our impact on nature. Charming ambiances and attention to details are also key elements. The owners always around will welcome you in person. We organize trips in kayaks, bicycles, horseback ridings, etc.

We had and amazing experience. People are very kind.
You can get a kayak and row across the river until get to the beach of nativos, it was very fun and beautiful.
The food is very good on the breakfast and also the restaurant.
The rooms are very well decorated, clean and very pleasant. The pool area is very nice, and the ambient is surrounded by trees, what gives you a real connection with nature.
It is very well located, very close to Quadrado, and also to the beach. You can reach both on foot quickly, so its very good, because the minimum fare of taxi is R$ 30.

I stayed about a week at this charming Pousada, over New Year's with a group of friends. The location is great, a 10-minute walk from Trancoso's famous main square, Quadrado, and from the beach.
From helping organize yoga classes, to booking massages, or helping you get tickets to a sold-out party, the staff at Mata Nativa goes above and beyond for the guests. Irina, the owner, will make sure your experience is excellent, serving as the concierge any luxury hotel wishes they had!

We stayed in Mata N’ativa Pousada for 6 days in August 2007. We got the apartment called “Peroba Rosa”, which has two floors, upstairs there is a double bed (with a mosquito-net as a baldachin ☺), a balcony with two big armchairs, downstairs two single beds, a pretty bathroom and a hammock on the veranda. The apartment is becomingly furnished, very-very charming. The cleanness was immaculate, the apartment was cleaned every day.
Other areas can only be described in high terms, as well: the garden is gorgeous, the apartments are practically fully separated by enormous beautiful plants and there are nice little paths in between. The breakfast, which was already in itself miraculous (fresh fruits and juices, pineapple jam, home-made cakes …), was served on the veranda of the reception area, so we had a nice view to the garden and the river during breakfast (which really gives your day a fabulous start). There is a nice mini spa-island with a Jacuzzi. And there is also a TV in the apartments and another one with lots of DVD’s and international channels in the social area (but in such a beautiful place you will spare your time ☺). There is a free private parking and during nights there is a watchman.
The owners of the place really do their best: they are very gentle, (they speak excellent English!), Daniel gave us many useful tips on where to go, what to see, where to eat…
The location of the pousada is also very good. It is close to a beach (Praia dos Nativos) and to the centre of Trancoso. We came with a car, so we made use of it also, we visited a few places further on, e.g. Praia do Espelho.
The whole place is beautiful, homey, cheerful … it’s perfect!

We can't wait to go back!

We stayed 4 nights at this "pousada". Our room was close to the kitchen, that is a problem, because in the morning the breakfast preparation causes a lot of noisy. Also the rooms are not well cleaned, so you can feel some bad smell sometimes. And since it is in a beach area inside a nice small forest, humidity is very high, so they should use some dehumidifier to improve the smell. Bed linen and towels also not so good. The best part is he nice breakfast.

Owners are very nice folks and always helpful, excellent breakfast, clean room and nice swimming pool. We stayed in a room with jacuzzi, which is very well worth it. Overall we liked Mata Nativa.

Room and bathroom are spacious and there is a DVD selection that, since we went during a lower season, we used it almost every night. But if you are looking for luxury, this is not the place to go to. Also, we stayed there because we thought that the Quadrado could be noisy at night. But the Quadrade is very silent after 8 or 9 pm.

Some simple improvement would be useful. Like, for ex., flashlight to go to the Quadrado at night could be provided (we bought one). A paper map with the restaurants, beaches and places to go would be useful. The pousada could have a partnership with the cabs at the Quadrado for cheaper ride (a 2 min ride back to the hotel is R$ 15!!).

Pros:
breakfast; jacuzzi, silence, privacy, nature around and owners' hospitality

Cons:
way to the Quadrado at night is very dark and deserted (we herd that there has been some theft late ate night. I was there for a week and did not see anything, but it is pitch dark and there are several places for someone to hide along the way).
Also, some details could be easily taken care of. Ex. some times we had to ask to clean the jacuzzi that was not done. They had incense in the room, but was only replaced once. and other small things.

It is just great to be so close with the nature, at a river bank, close to an amazing beach and just close to the mistic Quadrado of Trancoso. This place gives you a quiet, clean and relaxing environment sorrounded by nature, art and great service. If you look for privacy, nice place and great location, this is the place in Trancoso where you should stay.

Rooms were comfortable, we were 2 families so we took the rooms closest to the parking lot, both of them had the Jacuzzi which was great! I believe rooms on the higher floor would have a nice view but with small children we did not want those rooms. It is rustic and very Eco-friendly so the rooms and the entire layout is geared around that idea.

We rented a car (highly recommended even if the roads are bad/dirt roads). It is a 5 minute drive from the quadrado and 5 minute drive to the beach. We could have walked tot he beach too. Someone in the quadrado recommended that we do not walk to the posuada after dark using the short cut so we always drove.

Breakfast was fresh and wholesome and they took into account dietary constraints. They also baked a cake for my husband on his birthday. We all gained weight from having the delicious cakes and bread.

Service was outstanding - the staff was very helpful and worked through any language barriers. Wifi is only in the common areas and did not reach our room (we did not mind that). he owner Daniel was very helpful and always present in the mornings to answer any questions we had. He also arranged for horseback riding for us and told us of other activities like kayaking in the river.

I would recommend Mata N'ativa to fellow budget travelers who would like to be close to nature.

Execelent breakfast, cozy, charming, good swimming pool, well located, near excelent beaches and the Trancoso "Quadrado".
However, bedrooms are much smaller than they look like on the website and the mattress is old and does not smell good. The hotel should replace them immediately.

With respect to the pousada, we enjoyed very much our stay. The place is calm, beautiful, confortable and perfectly integrated into the surrounding forest. The staff is courteous and efficient; they made us feel at home all the time. Breakfast is delicious and enough to let us spend the whole day on they beach without lunch. Although there is a lot of mosquitos, ants and other insects around, we could easily sleep without any incident. I would not go there without protection though, specially if one is alergic to insect bites. We stayed at "Jequitiba" room and it was perfect for a couple, with a nice jacuzzi. We have not visited the other rooms but they seemed smaller.

Trancoso is the pefect spot for those that want to enjoy the calm, warm waters of southern Bahia and still be close to civilization. Personally I think that the neighborhood has become a bit too posh in the last years and, as a consequence, it lost a bit of its soul. But still, the tranquility, the sightseeing and the long, almost deserted beaches are worth the visit. It is a better choice than Porto Seguro, which has become too crowded after big tour operators have taken the city by assault.

Pousada Mata N'ativa is located about 5 minutes walk from the beach and 5 minutes from the "Quadrado". For us, this was convenient since we prefer to be close to the beach than to the buzzle of bars and restaurants. The only inconvenience was that we had to walk uphill every night in order to eat something, since the pousada serves only breakfast and some sandwiches at night. Besides being a steep uphill, the path to Quadrado was really dark and a bit scary at night. The locals say that there is no danger but we witnessed a robery one night and once we had to change our places on the beach because of a couple of suspicious guys that insisted on staring at us. I was born and raised in Brazil and my wife has been there many times so we don't tend to be scared without reason; my advise is, relax and enjoy but be aware that your spending might be worth a year's salary of a local family.
