Shower pressure is almost none existing, but warm. The beds are quite hard, but i suppose it's how it is in Brasil.
The cost is pretty much the same as all the other beach front pousadas, and from what we could see was one of the best. Don't listen to reviews that complain about having to carry your suitcase over the sand and it being far from town. You can have people carry your case for you or follow the road behind town, and the restaurants along the beach are nicer than the ones in "town", which is only a 10 minute walk anyway!
We've travelled around the whole of South America and stayed here for 2 nights as a treat and didn't regret it one bit. Highly recommended.
The room was very big and comfortable with a nice bathroom and balcony. It all seemed very new and very clean. Breakfast is served downstairs looking out on the sand with an amazing spread of different breads, cheeses, meats, eggs, cakes, fruit, juices, coffee and lots of different types of tea! Yum!
The staff were very friendly, and every time we came into the guesthouse there was free fresh coffee, tea and cake for us to eat!
Out the front there are sun loungers in the garden facing the beach where you can just relax!
It turned out to be cheaper than hostels in the area, and way better value even compared to some dorms! Wish I could stay here again!
Caicara was clean, but the room furnishings were very threadbare. We were not able to get a sea view room and were in the back room, number 9. The toilet was a joke. You had to sit sideways which was just bizarre and I'm just a normal size lady!! There was also a terrible smell in the bathroom the entire time we were there which was not very pleasant. The toilet seat was also broken and the taps were moving around in the sink but after mentioning to the front desk these were fixed by the time we got back that evening. The shower was good though with lots of hot water although there was only cold water in the sink taps.
An issue for some people might be the lack of english speaking staff, however if you have some Portuguese basics this shouldn't be a problem. Also the internet connection was a joke, regardless of the weather which they seemed to blame but I think this is an island problem and not just the pousada as we also tried the internet cafe and it was exactly the same.
The pousada is set at the end of the beach in Abraão which you have to walk along to get to the pousada. This is nice during the day and beautiful at night when the stars are out, very romantic, however, you do have to cross a stream that can be very fast running and can be up to your knees at times so be warned!!!!! It's only a 5-10 min walk to the centre of Abraão and you pass a couple of nice bars and restos on the beach as you walk along.
We were sleeping in the back of the pousada and it was very quiet, however at about 7am onwards as all the rooms essentially back onto the central atrium under which is the kitchen and breakfast area I think everyone will be woken up with the staff preparing everything so take ear plugs if you are a light sleeper!!
Breakfast was 8am to 10am and was very simple but enough to start you off with eggs (as you like them) and the usual Brazilian fare of toasts, breads, cereal, cheese, ham, fruit and cake. They also layed out a small afternoon tea for guests to help themselves to of tea, coffee and sticky buns!!! My only complaint was that the entire time they did not have any normal black tea!!
The real conversation here is in the pride the owners and the pousada's staff take in the job they do to please you. THAT is the story.
The Pros:
1. beautiful hotel grounds with balconies, living rooms, patios, and a great beach-front location.
2. the rooms are comfortable, nicely dressed, have a safe box, a decent sized bathroom, fridge, and tv.
3. the staff is the BEST feature of this pousada: everyone is professional, friendly, helpful and happy. Kudos to Nubia who is "the brain" behind the day to day operations.
4. The best breakfast on the island is probably served here. And they also provide a delicious afternoon snack with coffee, tea, and some bakes.
Here is the thing: the owners are VERY smart people -they know it does not cost too much to treat their guests to a cup of java and a yum pastry. And the benefit of that is the appreciation that we -their guests- return in the form of great reviews and hopefully many future visits.
And they do this with great taste, offering great coffee, very good bakes, and a nicely set cafe area. We appreciate!
5. I needed to wash my wet suit and they let me in their wash room for a few minutes to do the wash.
Again: whatever you need, tell them. If they can help you they will and you will notice how much pride and effort they put into it.
Why? What is their secret? What is behind such motivation?
My wife and I were very impressed with everyone here. We will return.
The Cons. The cons?
What a pleasure it is to come across one of those very few reviews where there are no cons or very few cons.
Maybe they don't have a pool - but who needs one when you have an ocean in front of your hotel room.
Maybe they are a 5-min walk from downtown -but again, if you can't walk 5 minutes to down town you probably should not be in Ilha Grande to begin with.
There is really nothing we disliked about Pousada Caicara.
We thought it was the best of the five hotels we stayed at during our recent Brazil trip.
And the honesty of their owners who don't overprice their services is something worth mentioning.
The Pousada, can accommodate up to 20 guests, sits directly on the sand in a quiet area some 10 - 15 mins walk from the quayside. Our room - sea facing with balcony, complete with two chairs and a small table; although the chairs were to say the least uncomfortable - but it was lovely to stand & watch the world go by. Some plastic chairs, whilst not stylish would have been preferred. The bed room is small but perfectly formed with a lovely walk in shower. No English language news programme on the TV.
The breakfast room on the ground floor was lovely with a very good choice for breakfast & then there was afternoon tea from 4.00pm - wonderful! All staff very pleasant & helpful - but little English spoken - no problem.
My only adverse comment is about the lack of chairs & shade for guests in the garden. Yes there was a very large tree close by on the beach, 60% was used by a nearby bar during the day - but there was still 40% of shade left for visitors, locals etc. The Pousada had 3 sun loungers, which could be taken to the beach - but what about the other guests? Secondly there are no sun umbrellas; I have commented on Trip Advisor on a number of occasions that the Americas (from the USA, through Central America to Brazil) do not seem to recognise the correlation between sun bathing & skin cancer. It is some 7 years since I first wrote about this problem with reference to Brazil. Of course many guests went on organised trips for the day or perhaps found some limited shade on other beaches - who knows!
We were coming to the end of a 3+ weeks holiday, when we simply wanted some R&R on the beach, sitting in a comfortable chair with a book to read. The owner was a very helpful & pleasant gentleman & I would like to think that he may give consideration to some more chairs & umbrella shade for his guests
