This was such a beautiful little hotel. A real slice of paradise and seclusion. We came away feeling relaxed and healthy! The staff are lovely, it is well priced and food is good. Lots of fish, coconut, local ingredients. They helped us organise transfers, day trips etc. free kayaks are great too.
I only wish it was a little easier or cheaper to get to abraao for a day trip (although this is not the hotels fault!). However after going there, I was much happier we stayed over the quiet side of the island as it is much prettier!
Thank you to all the staff for making our stay wonderful!

This place has to be seen to be believed. Stunning location on the water's edge, a short kayak away from the blue lagoon (great snorkelling spot). Larger pristine beaches are an even shorter paddle or jungle walk away. Our suite was a large en suite with a beautiful balcony hanging over the water's edge. Staff were very helpful and accommodating with our late checkout. Food and drinks are served on the deck above the beach and below the rim flow pool. Pool, beach, dining area, rooms all well-maintained and very clean. Paraiso has a lovely atmosphere and family feel about it. It's worth making the trip through the rain forest to Bananal and the Fauna restaurant. Lua knows the way - you will find her sleeping under the couch on the deck.

What a place... as close to paradise as we have been! The hotel is built within the jungle, facing Lagoa Azul! The rooms are extremely spacious and have air conditioning! The private beach was an unexpected bonus! If you are in doubt about staying at this place just look at the pictures....

This was our last stop after 10 days travelling in Bresil, our 3rd hotel in this country. We were 2 adults and 2 children (11 and 16 years old). If this hotel is located in a nice place, closed to a nice lagoon, the value for money is bad, very bad. We paid 3540 R$ (around 1000 euro) for 3 nights excluding the lunch and dinner (which are charged at a very high level). With that prices (higher than a 4 stars hotel on the french riviera), we could have expect a high level of services. However that was not the case.
The bad experience started when, 10 days before the stay, I made the reservation directly through the hotel website instead of booking via booking.com (in order to let them save the Booking.com fee). For any reason, the payment I made did not work. I got in contact with the hotel staff and they proceeded the reservation manually via PayPal in USD. But for a reason they did not mention, the price was increased compare to the price mentioned on the website. It was also higher than the price mentioned on booking.com ! Because I was a bit late in my reservation and had no time to find an other hotel, I validated this new price.
This hotel is located on a very small beach. There is nothing around except fishermen houses. The only way you can get in and out is via taxi boat.
The staff was a bit pressing to organise a transfer from Angra with their boat. They charge 90 R$ per person from Angra. The boat is slow and it takes 1 hour for the transfer. For a timing reason, the hotel organised for us a transfer with a speed boat. The charge paid to the driver directly was 350 R$ for a 25 mn ride. (Most of the pousada on Ilha Grande offer a free transfer from Abraao…).
The « suite » we booked was around 30 m2 with a 10 m2 bathroom. When we arrived we had almost 50 mosquitos in the bathroom and 10+ in the bedroom. When you know that the yellow fever is present on this island, this is just unbelievable. Of course, no spray was available in the room, and I was obliged to request one from the staff. The mini bar in the room was empty. During the night it was impossible to get some water to drink. When it rained, one of the beds was wet even if the window was closed…
The day after our arrival, during the afternoon, we had a very bad smell in the bathroom. This was due to blocked pipes. Again I was obliged to request a staff to come in order to find a solution. I do not understand why the cleaning lady who changed our towels in the morning did not mention that to her management.
Maintenance is a major issue in this hotel. The room itself was not very clean. We had a lot of spiderweb. The bathroom was dirty with mold in the shower. The mosaic of the pool is very damaged, the pool water is cloudy. The 2 sofas in the lobby are dirty. This is not surprising as the dogs who lives in this hotel sleep on the sofa. I was very surprised to see Ellyien, one of the managers of this hotel, stroking the dog that was sleeping on the sofa (used by the customers) instead of make him leave. The tank where you can get some (warm) drink water is moldy.
Due to the location of the hotel, you have no other choice than having all your lunchs and dinners in their restaurant. The lunch is "à la carte" and is fairly priced (even if it is higher than in Rio de Janeiro). The food is well prepared and is good.
However, the dinner is just a very small buffet. There are just 5 or 6 plates on a table with rice, beans, chicken, and salad (only cheap ingredients). There is only 1 dessert (a cake or compote). No fruit.
The dinner is charged 75 R$ per person (It seems they lowered the price recently from 90 R$ after complaints from customers)! Even with that reduction, this price is far too much expensive. It should not be charged more than 45 R$ especially for cheap ingredients. Of course, all guests stay there for dinner as there is no other alternative around ! The ambience for dinner is very strange. The people eat very fast. Because there is nothing to maintain the heat, what you eat is lukewarm. The lights are at the minimum, only candles light up the table. You do not see really what you eat.
The breakfast is also very simple: no eggs, no bacon, no croissant, no pastry, only bread, some fruits, some ham and cheese, and fresh orange juice. The toaster is antik and is burning all the breads.
We did not see the owner Martin during our stay. We still do not know who was managing the hotel during out time as a guest. Ellyien and Carol, the 2 young girls in charge of administration spent most of their time in their working space. Interaction with customers were very rare. It was also rare to obtain an hello in the morning from them. I had the feeling they were more on vacation than at work.
The staff is globally absent except Alex who is doing almost everything. The service is globally absent even if we were only 12 guests in this hotel. Everything seems to be unprofessional. The beach towels and the bottles are not cleared regularly by example.
One day I asked Ellyien and Carol to help me change a 100 R$ bank note in order to pay a taxi boat. They replied they did not have any money in the hotel (which was surprising as all the transactions are made by cash on this island). The taxi boat was waiting and I had to find a solution. It is an other guest of this hotel who helped me make the change ! Neither Ellyien nor Carol made any effort to help me make this change. They did not care completely. The day after I saw Ellyien with a big wad of banknotes paying a meat provider ! So she lied to me…
One of my daughters celebrated her birthday in this hotel (this was mentioned in my mails exchanges with Ellyien and Carol during the reservation process). I ordered a cake for this occasion that was nice. However, In every hotel in the world, the staff would have prepare a small attention for this occasion. At Paraiso Azul Retiro, my daughter did not get any smile nor a congratulation from the staff (except from Alex) !
There is not much to do in this hotel. There are only 4 deck chairs on the small beach. The garden is very small. There is no animation, no proposition to discover the rain forest, no proposition to discover the islands in front of the hotel with the kayaks. If you do not manage yourself to get an activity, nobody will propose you something. A german family told us that they made a big mistake in booking 5 nights in this hotel. They mentioned that they should have book maximum 3 nights and maybe they will leave before the end of their stay even if they lose money.
The total prices we paid was 4934,80 R$ (around 1400 euros) for 3 nights with lunch and dinners for 2 adults and 2 children, which is far too much excessive. Too much expensive compare to the service we received ! What you pay is the isolation.
I sent this comment to Martin the owner / manager: he never replied. This unprofessional attitude confirms that his only concern is to make as much money as possible without any concern about customer satisfaction

Dear guest, We thank you for your honest feedback. We addressed the issues that you pointed out with so much detail and discussed them with every member of our team. We will do our best to make the necessary adjustments so that future guests have a good experience. The reason I did not answer earlier is that I was traveling abroad in a remote area with unstable internet connection. Our intention is that all of our guests spend a great time with us, leave happy and spread the word among friends and relatives. Unfortunately we could not achieve this with you. We hope to receive your visit in the future and hopefully you will experience all the improvements first hand. Best wishes, Martin

This was our final stop after one month of traveling in Brazil. We read the other reviews online and saw pictures so we were very excited about staying here.
Unfortunately it was a bit disappointing. We booked the standard room but decided to upgrade to the suite right away.
The standard room did not meet our standards. No air con, no refrigerator, only one lamp that did not do much of a difference. Very dark room and not very clean. Bathroom very small. In my opinion a very overpriced room that needs a big redecorating.
The suite was bigger but still not very clean and super dark. Three light bulbs were not working and did not get replaced during our four night stay. Air con and refrigerator worked well and the view was good. The room was sealed off probably and we did not see any big bugs or stuff like that.
The staff is super friendly. Two of the employees spoke English and we appreciated that.
Big yoga hall but no yoga classes and dirty yoga mats.
The food at the restaurant is good and lunch is fairly priced.
However dinner was 90BRL. This is crazy expensive in my opinion. It is a buffet of rice, beans, farofa, some meat, salad and a dessert (cheap ingredients). You do not get any alternatives. Of course all guests buy it because there are no other options when you stay there.
No water available. Only 0,5L bottles at 5BRL each. You had to pay for water at breakfast and for brushing your teeth.
The boat that takes you directly to the hotel and back to Angra is very old and very slow. Of course it is more expensive than the shuttle boat to Abroaa even though that boat sails more than twice the distance and is better/newer/faster. I also noticed that the boat they used to sail all the garage away with was the same boat they used to transport us with. But again you do not have any alternative so you do it.

Dear Frederik, Thank you for your honest feedback. We are happy that you enjoyed your stay at the Suite and that you considered the staff super friendly. This is very important, as we do our best to make our guests feel at home. We have followed your suggestion and redecorated the Standard rooms, adding more lights. We are glad that you liked the food at our restaurant and that you considered it fairly priced. We followed your suggestion and lowered the price of the dinner to R$75, adding more options of meat, fish and sea food. We also offer free mineral water on a 20 litter dispenser available 24 hours at the reception. Please note that our boat is a private exclusive transfer for the guests of the lodge. Hence, it costs a bit more than the regular public boat to Abraao that transports more than 40 people. The boat is not old, it's actually recently reformed from a traditional wooden boat used by local fishermen, now modified to transport tourists safely (and dry, which is a big advantage compared to the faster open fast boats that go to Abraao, where people get totally wet when it rains). I hope that you visit again in the future so that you can experience our improvements first hand! Best wishes, Martin

We had a really bad experience in this hotel ; first all teh services are out ( no pool ,no jacuzzi , nothing is working-they say us after that they know they have to re do work-) , no services , for take the boat to the hotel it s complicated , nobody contesting to the phone , it s really expensive and you can t do nothing because the hotel is isolated . But the worst it s that we had bed bugs on our room and it was a real nighmare .
The place is pretty , it s the only positive point , but I think they will close or re do this hotel , because there is no manager , nothing .

I booked 3 nights here as a present for my dad’s birthday and was slightly apprehensive after reading some mixed reviews on here. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised and I think a lot of the previous feedback has been taken on board by the owner.
The staff, particularly Michaela, were super friendly and very helpful - I think perhaps there may have been a change in staff since some of the previous reviews.
Our room was spacious and clean, with a terrace and beautiful views over the bay. The food was fresh, healthy and delicious, with a varied lunch menu and plentiful buffet dinner. I have been in Brazil for 6 weeks and have found most of the hotel food to be quite unhealthy, so this was a nice change. The chefs really were excellent. They also told us they were offering the buffet for a “promotional price” of RS60, instead of RS75 - whether it will stay at this price I don’t know, but I thought it was very fair given the quality.
The setting couldn’t be more beautiful - lovely views over the bay, with the dense jungle behind. The free kayak and snorkel use was perfect for exploring some of the small local beaches and also the nearby Lagoa Azul. We saw lots of colourful fish, dolphins and sea turtles.
It’s a shame the yoga room is so under-used as it really is a lovely space, but we did our own yoga/stretching session in there without a teacher, which was fine.
There were two issues we had whilst we were there - firstly the boat transfer from the port. They quote this at RS300, which is very expensive for the 25 minute ride. When we arrived at the port I asked another boat taxi how much they would charge and they said 200, so I asked the skipper sent by the hotel to match that price. The boat tours around the island are also expensive but Michaela was very helpful in finding other people from the hotel to share the cost with. It is definitely worth a trip to Praia Lopes Mendes, which is stunning.
Secondly, we were there for 3 nights and for 2 of those we had no power which made sleeping with no air conditioning very uncomfortable as the rooms get very warm. I have read that power cuts on Ilha Grande are a common problem, so this is not the fault of the hotel. However for the price of the rooms there, they should have a generator as back up. I was told they do have one, but it needs to be set up, so I would encourage anyone booking in the future to check this has been done.
The owner was very accommodating in giving us a discount as compensation for the lack of power.
All in all we had a lovely stay and, as I said at the beginning, I think the hotel has taken steps to improve following the previous feedback.

This place is idyllic, we stay four nights our room was lovely modern and clean. The views are up there with the best ever, and we have travel a lot .
Food good , you must have the Fried shrimp !
Staff lovely but don’t speak much English. Gabriel is so helpful and does understand more than the others. If you want too see more of the beautiful beach’s you must ask and they will tell you wear and get the boats for you . There is couple of other small beach’s you can walk to or take the kayaks too .This is a very Special secluded hotel but would definitely come back , it’ turly is paradise . I Saw two turtles and plenty of fish .
Only down , is there is a couple of rooms that have not yet been renovated so make sure you get modern ones .

We have travelled in brasilian "winter" (2. half of May) to this marvellous ressort - that fully deserves the title "hide-away"! Beautiful setting, more than friendly staff (special thanks to Martin and Volunteer Ingrid for their patience in answering to our neverending questions and the "cooking-team" for accepting our intruding in their kitchen looking for chili-powder :-)!), pleasant temperatures ( 28° Celsius day, 20° Celius night) and an overwhelming surrounding.
Don´t come here, if you look for a "standard beachfront-hotel with normal 4 Stars service" - this is so much more: It´s a place with a secluded, small beach (unique at Ilha Grande), with a choice of rooms from somehow basic but still with all ammenities to luxury (we took the cheapest room with an incredible terrace with hammock and sunset-view), You cann´t go out to have dinner anywhere else (because of the location of the ressort - can be reachd only by boat)- but (seriously) you don´t want this :-): Kitchen is very authentic and excellent and the service is personal and flexible (service-oriented) .
BUT: You can go hiking for hours in the pristine rainforrest (visting old churches, abandonned schoolbuildings, requonquered by jungle, small villages, and wonderful beaches) or kayaking to the Lagoa Azul, snorkeling and swimmimg with turtles, or doing a boat tour to one of the most impressing beaches (Fernandes Mendez) and the "capital" Abrao, which at this time of the year belongs to the inhabitants.
Be sure tor be vaccinated against yellow fever, as this is an distribution area (like Rio), and bring a spray against tropical mosquitos, as there are sandflies.
Thanks to all of you for the wonderfui vacation! Hope to see you again sometimes.
Brigitte and Klaus
PS: WLAN was accessible in the restaurant area using hotspots from Martin or Ingrid.

Great place to spend some tile relatively far from civilization. The bungalow is great, gives you the feeling of being alone in the middle of the tropical island 🏝 Good food, specially fish is fantastic. You need to arrange a boat for trips or your experience gets limited

Hi Zoey!
Thank you for contacting us! Below please find the information to get to our lodge:
1. Land transportation
We can arrange a taxi from Rio de Janeiro to Angra dos Reis for R$475 (up to 4 people) or a van for R$750 (up to 10 people).
Costa Verde bus company has long distance buses leaving pretty much every hour from Rio’s bus terminal (Rodoviaria Novo Rio). We suggest booking your tickets in advance and take the bus leaving at 10:00am arriving in Angra dos Reis around 1:00pm, with enough time to take a 10 minute taxi to the pier Antigo Cais de Turismo and take our boat at 2:00pm. If you come with your own car, we recommend Praia do Anil Parking lot.
2. Boat transfers
We provide a boat transfer leaving at 2:00pm from Angra dos Reis (the pier is named Antigo Cais de Turismo, the boat is named: “Dois Gemeos”, cost of transfer: R$90 per person one way, duration: approx 1 hour private boat navigating on sheltered ocean straight to our lodge). The return boat transfer leaves from our lodge to Angra dos Reis every day at noon, arriving in Angra around 1:00pm.
Please inform if you want to use our boat transfer service in order to reserve a place.
If you need to schedule a private transfer at a different time, please contact us with enough time in advance to schedule the boat.
3. Location
Our lodge is located on an exclusive beach named Praia Pequena da Freguesia de Santana, close from the Blue Lagoon, about 25 minutes West from Abraāo by taxi boat.
Our great restaurant sits right on top of the ocean, and serves lunch (a la carte, average price of R$50 per person per meal) and dinner (fixed menu - starter, main dish and dessert for R$75 per person).
There are four beautiful beaches and the Blue Lagoon only 10/20 minutes away from our lodge. We organize boat trips to many other beaches of the island (prices start at R$110 per person for a day trip, and may increase depending on amount of people, type of boat and destination).
We offer kayaks and snorkeling masks for free to our guests.
4. Reservation
You can make your reservation online through our website Paraiso Azul Retiro. In order to secure your reservation, we request a deposit of 50% of the total amount of your stay.
Since we cannot process foreign credit cards manually at the moment, we ask you to do a Direct Paypal transfer to our Paypal account.
