The Hotel Itamarati lies close to the geograhical centre of Sao Paulo. Its rooms vary in size from just big enough to crash out in to normal. All rooms are clean and hygenic but some are in need of minor repairs eg plaster or chipped basins.

The staff are very friendly and determined to help you. Do not be alarmed if they talk to you without looking at you. They mean no rudeness.

A basic but quite adequate breakfast is included in the price.

The local area is facinating but you must be aware of pick pockets opeating around the nearby Praca da Republica. The whole area hums at night.

An excellent budget hotel offering clean value for money.

I now live in Sao Paulo so, if you are travelling to the City and want prior advice drop me a line at guyslocum@aol.com

If you get a room upstairs facing the back of the building (opposite the breakfast area on the other side of the courtyard) they are clean, quiet and beautiful throughout. You can also pick up a detachable keylock from the reception if you chose to lock up your room's safe. In case you run out of sd/micro sd card like me, you can buy them from a small drinks kiosk by the roadside at the traffic light on the same side of the hotel as you walk towards the big park. The area outside the hotel is very busy and crowded on weekends as there are many bars around but almost deserted on weekdays. You can exchange US dollars for Real at the hotel reception. They too can book city day tour for you, which I did. I was with a group tour and stayed for 2 nights enroute to Rio.The short dark hair pleasant looking middle age lady who speak better English than the rest of the hotel employee is very helpful. I thinks she's the owner but I could be wrong. Someone in previous review had mentioned about the view on top of the "italian?" building. Yes, great view indeed. As you walk into the building, although there are lifts on your left, take the lift to the right and go to level 34 but level 37 is better as it has a cleaner lift lobby area and safer for female tourists as the female lift operators often take a break there when their lifts aren't busy. Beware the lifts are old and wobbly and looks like they jam every now and then as I watch the lift operator fiddling around with the lift buttons and keys. Love the TV in the lift though.I was allowed to go up the building in the morning - I didnt know back then until I read reviews here that they only allow visitors at set time from 3pm till..
Enjoy your stay in Sao Paulo and don't forget to count the number of helipads on top of the buildings whilst you are at level 37 - you will be amazed!

I stayed in a twin room on 5th floor in early December 2013. The room impression is even more insistant than the rest of the hotel. That is a room with outdated furniture, almost like in a theme hotel. Some might like this "never-refurbished" aspect some might just not like it at all.
The staff is very helpful even though not perfect English speaking and all public and bedrooms parts of the hotel are perfectly clean.
Hotel is relatively cheap and pers se good value for money.
Don't go there for a charming neighborhood, don't try to leave the hotel for a night walk!

Stayed here whilst on an organised trip and certainly wouldn't return. Place is outdated and dirty - wasn't sure whether I was taking dirt off or putting it on in the shower. My room faced onto the main street and was incredibly noisy (almost felt like my bed was actually in the street) and it certainly didin't feel safe stepping outside after dark. Air con unit in room just added to the street noise. For a hotel of this size, in a large city, the breakfast was half-hearted. 'Cereal/cornflake' consisted of a individual size bowl of oats (for the whole hotel) and the waitress seemed bemused that I would want it topped up. And there were definitely no cornflakes present. At least the fruit was fresh....

Hotel Itamarati is located about 1 block from Praca da Republica, easily walkable from airport bus terminal, a main reason why I chose it. It is an older building, needing upgrades, but generally clean and apparently safe and provides reliable accommodation. Staff are efficient, but not particularly friendly or welcoming. Rooms are smallish and overall the hotel is a bit expensive for what you get. Breakfast is plentiful with a good selection.
The street is busy during the day and evening, with a number of bars (including several gay bars) present. Although there are some seemingly dodgy characters out at nite, no-one bothered me (I was not out on foot past 10 pm), and the nearby Pca da Republica definitely should be avoided at night (drug dealers, prostitution, etc).

Overall, not a bad place, but you can probably do better for the price elsewhere.

I don't care if it's free to stay in this place, it was horrible. Some people may describe it as retro, but in reality it hasn't been decorated or refurbished since the 70's. The windows in our room were rusted shut, the shower cubicle was held together with rust and was tiny - putting your tetanus booster to work. There was an air conditioning unit in the room, but turning it on just seemed to generate a lot of noise and nothing else.

If I had to give any redeming features I'd say that there is free Internet (by means of a computer) at reception.

We were advised by our tour guide (we stayed as part of a Toucan Tour trip) not to turn left out of the hotel at night.

For hotels in Sao Paulo, this one is very reasonable. It has a great location, and whilst it's definitely quite dated in it's decor, this adds to it's character. The fridge was so old that it actually looked pretty retro cool!! Having said that, everything works, it's clean, plenty spacious enough and staff are great. Free internet in the lobby and easy to get to the main attractions. I would recommend this too!

There's nothing special about a stay here but it's good enough for a short stay in SP.

The location is very convenient, right near Praca Republica and the Republica metro station. It's a short walk through the square to the pedestrian shopping precinct and the old town. But as noted by others it is not recommended to walk around the area after dark, particularly in and around the square. Whether or not this is a deal breaker will vary person to person.

Our double room was fairly basic, older style but clean and comfortable enough. The air con was not particularly effective and the TV offered a very limited range of stations and no English language ones. The bathroom was small but good enough. The key to the very old fashioned safe had to be signed for at reception. It took us a while to realise this and it would have been much better had this been pointed out when we checked-in.

Breakfast is the standard South American continental with the added bonus of scrambled egg, a sausage mix and tropical fruits (banana, papaya, melon and pineapple). A better selection that we encountered in some Hotels with a better rating than this one.

The Hotel is a bit of a rabbit warren - we actually needed assistance from a staff member to find our room the first time. Not a problem once we got our bearings. The coffee offered in reception to all guests in the afternoon is a nice touch.

Stayed in the hotel whilst on a group tour. The location is central (about 5min walk from the metro Republica), and the historic centre is within walking distance. On the downside, you should stay on the main roads and do NOT walk in the Republic Square during the night (unsafe).
Our room was basic but clean, faced the road, but with the windows & shutters closed we slept well with the aircondition. Free WiFi throughout the hotel. Breakfast was the usual brazilian "basic" with some fresh fruits. Free coffee in the lobby.
A few minutes walk away there are a couple of smaller supermarkets and a few restaurants are near the hotel.
On the weekend there is a art and craft maket on the square. I also recommend taking the lift up the Italia Building at the north corner of the square (second tallest in Sao Paulo) for a great view over the city (free from 3-4pm Monday- Friday).

Room was spacious with a little dining area and a fringe. Furniture and decoration were antiques that you can only see in movies. Coffee is always ready in reception area. Breakfast was good too but they refused to give us packed breakfast when we needed to check out at 5 a.m. Overall recommended.
