I was assigned to Pleven for three weeks and decided to stay at Hotel City. It seems to be the choice of most expat visitors. Reception is simple but some staff speak English. Rooms are specious but furnished in modern boudoir style. Removing their bed cover makes things much more friendly. I stayed in three rooms and they were equally equipped with the ubiquitous cow hide poof. 201's shower leaks onto the floor however. The best part of the hotel is the TV reception. There is something for everyone in all languages. I never dined in the city hotel but I had breakfast there. You get a menu to choose from 12 breakfast options (thee is no buffet). I just had Muesli, toast with honey, orange juice and coffee. I'd stay here again.

Having paid equivalent of €50 for single use of a twin, despite 4 star grading, this did not come up to its promise. Room was depressing dark brown - walls, curtain, furniture, bed cover the lot. Despite looking quite new, some "maintenance" issues such as a large patch of peeling wallpaper on wall next to bathroom. No doubt through a leak. One plug was completely loose and had fallen out of its fixture. There was a bar but no one seemed to be using it. An early start the next morning meant I did not take breakfast.

Too noisy, if you room is towards the main road, you will not havê silence from the passing cars
The bath rooms are dark, full of black mold see picture
Breakfast in a basement with a food/oilly smell that takes your apetite, in my opinion.
And this is one of the best hotel in town, imagine the rest...yes you don t HV many options but the standards here are quite low compared to western european countries

One of the worst hotels, that I have ever stayed in. Dirty rooms, unfriendly service, very cheaply made. Rooms were small and not welcoming. It does not have a spa, does not have a pool or massages. It's even not good for business meetings. I don't recommend it.

The situation with the hotels in Pleven is terrible. However this is a normal hotel, at least not so dirty like the other ones. It is far from the average EuropeAn hotels but for this town it is a perfect one. Yes the refrigerator in the room was disconnected, the heating is not working, but it is new and clean. The service is not bad.

Nice small hotel, with friendly staff.
WiFi signal is good on 1st floor and poor on the 2nd and 3rd. You need to know this, when booking.
Sometimes there is loud music at the reception...
Hooks is also missing in some rooms, so you have to put everything in your cupboard...
The minibar is very noisy... I slept with unplugged minibar...
Breakfast is poor, the waiter doesn't try to understand a foreigner, so you better learn some phrases, or you get your omelette with cheese inside...

The hotel was well situated for us. We liked everything about the hotel except that the internet was not accessible except in the lobby area. If we were to book again, we would insist on a 1st floor room in hopes of having the internet which in today's business travel climate is indispensable. Thanks for the personal help from a caring staff.

I will start this review by saying we had a great surprise by the hotel staff for our 'engagement night', so my feelings might have been influenced by that in the end.

Outlaying the bad first:
I found it took an unreasonably long time for the receptionist to enter our data, as she was constantly distracted with other things, most of which included chatting up with other staff. We were 6, tired, hungry and sweaty, and all we wanted were our rooms. I found it inconsiderate.

The other slight disappointment was that the staff spoke poor to no English at all. But that did not come as a complete shocker.

Lastly, the drain of the biggest apartment was stuck with hair. That was terrible, considering the guests who would have to stay there, would have had to pay great amount to do so, and would expect better standards.

A little bit overpriced for the country, but this is what happens when you don't have much competition in town. I was not too upset with that, as it was still not expensive altogether.

The good things:
All of us loved the interior of the hotel in general: the artistic style it had about it, the creative mess it suggested. The rooms were furnished with dark colors, and I found that to be positive and stylish. The look they went for was modern and artistic, and I thought the were going in quite the right direction and did a good job with it. But style is a personal thing, I suppose...

The staff were very friendly, even though distracted at times, and one of the receptionists made a good impression as a particularly helpful lady. It made us all feel nice.

The breakfast was great, the best thing was you were served at the table, and could choose from a variety of breakfast-types. A great thing was that my friend - who has a gluten-problem - was provided with a gluten-free breakfast. That was quite a surprise for a Bulgarian hotel, and a pretty nice one!

The nice surprise I was talking about in the beginning made the stay particularly nice for me and my partner. We had our engagement party in the restaurant of another hotel from the same chain, and when we came back, we opened the door of our apartment to the few of a rose petals and flowers path, leading to a rose petals covered bed and a bottle of sparkling wine. Definitely a certain way to make a young couple happy!

I thought the hotel was nice and modern, artistic and pretty, definitely trying for 4-star quality. They could try better, train their staff a little bit more, encourage them to engage the customer better, hire better qualified personnel... But all-in-all our stay was fun and pleasant.

I stayed at City Hotel for 7 nights in July 2009 with a small group of people from my church. The hotel was brand new and very modern. The rooms included a 32" LCD tv that had free internet connection. The rooms were air conditioned and the bathrooms had an enclosed shower. The restaurant which is located in the basement, serves a very nice breakfast with many choices.

The lobby has contemporary seating and a bar. There is also some outdoor space where we sat one evening. The walls are a dark sleek wood and there are bear and animal skin rugs on the floors in the rooms. The elevator is VERY small.

The hotel is only about 2 blocks from the plaza and pedestrian mall of Pleven that has many shops and restaurants. The location is very good. However, the side street is very loud early in the morning due to the bus line that runs on the street.

We had a problem one night where the hotel did not have any hot water. Our hosts were concerned about our comfort and the hotel arranged for us to be transported to their very nice property inside the Kayluka Park for the night.

I also would recommend the Art Hotel which I believe is owned by the same person.
