We did not expect too much from La Serena as it is not a big hub for tourism, but Balmaceda was one of the nicest hostels of our 4 month trip across south america! more like a hotel than a hostel. The staff was all very friendly and welcoming.

I really wanted to write a good review about this place and on a whole it was a good place to stay (especially in a town where there is nothing to do!) The young man on reception was really helpful and spoke excellent English! The room was nice and had a TV with its own bathroom. The wifi was excellent... More

Had a beautiful stay here. Although currently being renovated this didn't deter our stay. Lovely rooms and very friendly and attentive staff. Close to the central shopping and entertain area and only a couple of blocks from the bus terminal. Would stay here again.

This hostel is beautifully presented - we had a double room at the back of the complex that was an ideal size, had an en suite, locked cupboard (a huge bonus), and cable TV. The location is an easy walking distance to town and the bus station. Breakfast was help-yourself and was simple but good and there was a small... More

We stayed here for a few nights and it was overall good. It is not as social as a hostel, which may be annoying if you are travelling alone. The staff/owners are very nice and helpful, the rooms are clean and spacious. Breakfast comes in an already prepared box, and it is coffee, juice, sandwich and small pack of cookies.... More

We had a very pleasant 4 night stay here, but could not say that it was perfect. Firstly, we would definitely classify this as a small apartment complex rather than a hostel. That is no bad thing necessarily. The room itself was amongst the best we have had on our travels in South America - spacious, well equipped and clean.... More

Good location and nice rooms. Staff was very helpful but not extremely friendly. Breakfast was more of a snack but it came in handy. Would recommend if you prefer to be close to the town center than the beach. It was about 15-20 mins walk to the beach.

we stayed 2 nights at Balmaceda and enjoyed our time in La Serena. The hostel is well located in the centre, though not to the beach if that is what you're looking for. Staff were friendly and helpful with information, though maybe lacking a bit, no maps of La Serena, and tour options was only 1. Though we did really... More

Had a great stay in this hostel, after looking upon reviews we decided to go to this hostel. Stayed 2 nights, met manager and also owner, they all were kind and nice, even let us use the printer to print out my documents. Sometimes it's not easy to find where to print your things out. Room was very spacious(the room... More

This is a jumble of a hostal. The old part has 5 rooms that are two story with upstairs bedrooms and own kitchens and ensuite bathrooms. The new part is an amateur make-shift half-finished addition. There are gaps between the frames and doors, the tiling in the shower does not slant to the drain, there are no windows (except room... More
