This hotel was chosen for us by our tour guide, and we're so glad we had the opportunity to stay here for a few nights. Room was large and comfortable, and had all the basic amenities you needed. We had a chance to join one of their informational tours about the property - highly recommend so that you are able... More

A restored courtyard house, in a village outside Dali. Very rural, surrounding by rice fields. Rooms are comfortable, restaurant is good, staff are really friendly and helpful, atmosphere is relaxed and happy. Great to meet other travellers and exchange stories. . We had a guided walk around Xizhou, visited the embroidery school (definitely worthwhile), a rice noodle factory, and a... More

When you have visited many dirty " multimillion cities " in China for the last 19 years the small village Xizhou near Dali is a rough diamond. The Linden Centre, created and managed by Brian and his team, is a relief. The atmosphere is very special and all employees involved are doing their utmost to please you. The rooms are... More

Staying at the Linden Center is an incredible, once-in-a-lifetime experience. In the village of Xizhou, near Dali, Yunnan, it is situated on the old Tea Hours Trail, aka the Southern Silk Route. Not only is a stay in this restored merchant's home an experience of authentic history but the staff is amazing...so friendly and knowledgeable and willing to meet your... More

Anais Nin eloquently professed that "We travel, some of us forever, to seek other states, other lives, other souls." This belief is what inspired Jeanee and me to create the Centre. We saw China- the repository of thousands of years of cultural traditions and wisdom- destroying their heritage to cater to the short-term luxury demands of first time- and less... More

For years, I have heard people raving about the Linden Centre. Finally I had the opportunity to experience it for myself. As you can see from photos, it is on the edge of beautiful rice paddies. There is a private rooftop terrace where you can see mountains, fields, the sunrise and sunset. We spent many peaceful moments exercising, talking, and... More

Thank you for your heartening review. As you mention so eloquently, the Centre is the result a 'perfect storm' of different experiences, knowledge and passions. Jeanee and I have followed one consistent path in life- a commitment to culture and education. We could have pursued corporate careers but decided to invest our time in areas that, while less lucrative, are... More

We stayed there two nights, not on a raw, one at a family room and one at two separate rooms. We enjoyed more the family room, even though both rooms were very comfortable, clean and well designed. Thank you for staying with us. We are so proud of our team. Over 90% of our staff come from our neighboring villages. They were rarely exposed to English before joining the Centre and are now servicing our visitors with a passion seldom seen in China. I spent a few months at the Linden Centre earlier this year with a group of colleagues, using the Centre as the base for our research project. My time there was fantastic. The Centre loves to host scholars. Your intellectual curiosity inspires our team and guests. While at the Centre, we ask all scholars to deliver an evening talk and contribute a book or paper to our libraries. Future guests can also share their skills and experiences with us. It is not uncommon for our visitors to give talks about their careers,... More

Jeanee and Brian Linden arranged an intelligent, well-paced, and delightful tour for us. It was the perfect mix of village life, experience with China's ethnic cultures, the spiritual past and present of Yunnan, underlined with comfy digs and amazing meals. It was much more than being a tourist.... it was an experience.... getting into life and people. The work of... More

The Linden Centre transformed my view of China and was easily the highlight of my two week vacation. Its focus on offering immersive experiences doesn't begin to touch on what makes it magical -- you stay in a renovated, nationally protected, Chinese courtyard-style residence, meaning that your room is situated around a courtyard, with elaborately carved wooden doors and windows.... The Centre was established to help change visitors' minds about China. China has transformed my life, and the Centre is a reflection of the respect we have for China's traditions and its local people. Our goal is to let China's tangible and intangible culture enchant our visitors. These traditions do not need 'brand clothing' or 'western models' to tell their... More
