Superhost, great location, really special atmosphere, with own waterfall, which also acts as free white noise generator:) Unique opportunity to be hosted by the retired manager of the national park. He knows everything about it and has a lot of stories, worth to calculate some time, and just listen to him. If you don't feel you have time for this kind of things, maybe this is not the place for you. I am sure he still will be very nice, but you will miss sometng special.

Beautiful and peaceful place, try nature experience. Ivica the owner will do everything he can to make you enjoy your stay. He was a ranger at Plitvice and can guide you to secret places in the reserve. Having for dinner vegetables that he picked from his garden on the fire camp he made was a unique far to table experience.

The San Korana is a great place to stay to take-in the wonders of the Plitvice National Park for a few days. The host, Ivaca, is simply the most kind, informative, welcoming, and knowledgeable and host we have met, with a sly sense of humour to boot! He definitely knows how to get around the park and loves to share this knowledge to maximize the pleasure of travelers. The house is located in the park within minutes of the main entrance (#1) and minutes from good restaurants (we went to Degenija twice - delicious). The sound of the waterfall is so southing! On a Sunday afternoon, we were searching for a grocery store (many are closed), Ivaca suggested some places and even offered us to cook a meat pie for us! We booked the upper floor, but had all the place to ourselves.

If you go to Plitvice Lakes, do yourself a favor and try to book a room in San Korana house. The window view, the coziness, tranquility, sound of waterfall which is just below the house...simply gorgeous. This place is a paradise!!! And the owner Mr. Ivica is not only incredibly kind, witty and hospitable, but is also a human encyclopedia! We booked only 1 night but this year we'll definitely stay longer. I can't recommend this house enough! <3

We had the best time here. The place is beyond beautiful and the Ivica is the friendliest host! Very close to Plitvice Lake but without all the chaos. We were able to cook and BBQ here but there are also many restaurants nearby. There is a waterfall on the property and Ivica and his wife are helpful and kind. This is our second time here and we will definitely be returning. Thank you for everything!

We booked this place following recommendations here, and booking is very easy via the website and no deposit was required.

You certainly need a car, and it was a little difficult to find, being in quite an isolated enclave, but incredibly picturesque one. After arrival we went for a stroll and to take photos, it's right by a small brook and feel very local and traditional, we made friends with a number of neighbouring pets on our walk. Very peaceful setting.

All good so far, but couple of pointers - firstly the owners are very keen to point you in the direction of one restaurant for dinner - which is just a tourist trap with an uninspiring menu or meat/veg dishes or pizza. So avoid this and find your own.

Secondly, don't book the breakfast - we wanted something reasonably early 7.30 so we could get ahead of the crowds at Plitvice, but the owners obviously didn't want to be up so early, saying most tourist like to sleep in, which I find rather strange. Anyway we agreed on 8.30 in the end. But in the morning no one was around, and no sign of breakfast. We ended up calling the emergency number we had been given and the owners son said go to the neighbours house, where breakfast was served in their garage!! It was just cereal, jams, cheese and bread and a flask of coffee, so hardly an effort, so don't know why we couldn't have had this earlier. Just felt rather odd and a bit neglected.

We spent three nights at Sobe San Korana, and stayed on the second floor in room 2.

Ivica is the epitome of why you stay at a bed & breakfast. He is the absolute best in personal service! He and his wife live downstairs on the first floor. She doesn't speak much English, and will refer you to her husband.

The waterfall in front of the home is nicer than many of the falls we witnessed in Plitvice Lakes National Park! And wandering around Korana can be a very picturesque experience as well.

Ivica will recommend restaurants for you. All were very good and devoid of tourists, yet the staff still spoke English. He can also point you in the direction of the nearest ATMs and grocery stores, as well as souvenier shops (which were in the national park).

We told him we planned on two full days at Plitvice Lakes. He hand drew a map and schedule for us, told us where to park for free, and told us to take Route C from P3 all the way through the park. This will all make sense after you see a map of the park.

On the second full day, Ivica had planned on showing us some hikes outside of the park. We didn't know this, and had purchased a two day pass for the national park. You could definitely spend two days in the park, but we wished we'd been able to see the places he wanted to show us outside of the park as well.

Ivica made breakfast for us twice. He cooked eggs, and had breads and juices available for us as well.

Your room and bathroom are clean upon arrival, but not touched during your stay. You are in charge of your own cleanliness. Wifi was free and surprisingly fast, the fastest we had during our entire trip.

Our only complaint was the strong smell of cigarette smoke coming from the ground floor. We don't know if it's Ivica, his wife, or both who smoke, but the odor was so strong we had trouble sleeping or enjoying breakfast. The smoke was coming from inside the house, and even with our door and window closed it was still very strong.

In Sept. 2008 my husband and I had the great opportunity to travel around northern Croatia. At the top of our list of places to visit was Plitvice National Park. We easily went by bus from Zagreb and found our accomodations once there. Our lodging was with a wonderfully charming and VERY peaceful sobe (or B&B) 2 miles from the park. It is a family run sobe named San Korana. Here is their link www.sankorana.com The owner is Ivica Luketić. He and his family could not have been more friendly and helpful in making our stay pleasant, peaceful and INTERESTING. There is a local grocery store (to pick up supplies to make meals in the shared kitchen) OR a pleasant restaurant (both) a mile or so down the road. This sobe was charming, clean, and comfortable, located in a small streamside village (including water-powered grist mill where we watched local villagers grinding their corn) shortly downstream from the national park. The quiet, rural village was located in a beautiful valley and was the perfect refuge after each busy day in the national park.

Ivica speaks English well, is very friendly and concerned about his customer’s welfare, and is very knowledgeable and concerned about the park and the local ecology. We very much enjoyed our conversations with him (and his family) about the Park and its natural history, his family, Croatia, and more. (And of course, we enjoyed our 3.5 days in the Park along the lakes and waterfalls, and exploring the uplands of the native beech forest, following Ivica's suggestions.)

We hope you find this information helpful. Enjoy Croatia!

This place looks as if it has come out of a fairy tail. The beautiful property sits in the tiny village of Korana inside Plitvica national park. A crystal clear stream, complete with waterfall boarders this property and is a perfect place to swim after getting back from an amazing hike around the national park. Everyone was very accommodating and took the time to plan out our entire time in the parks. This will forever be my favorite bed and breakfast. It is an amazing place and to stay anywhere else would be just stupid.

Choosing an overnight accommodation near the Plitvitse Lakes, we’ve considered many options. Hotels in the National Park looked somewhat depressive; those in Rakovica were slightly further than we would want to be, so we researched private houses in the area around the lakes. San Korana seemed to respond to our needs just fine.

BOOKING

Fast and easy: sent a request via their web-site and received a prompt e-mail from the owner, Ivica. We were offered a double room with own bathroom for EUR 17 per person per night in early October. Unlike some other places we’ve contacted, no advance deposit or credit card details were required here.

LOCATION AND HOUSE

Korana is a tiny village situated in the canyon below Karlovac-Udbina road. San Korana is a three-storey house in stone and wood, at the near edge of the village, by the paved road.

Have to confess, one of the reasons for choosing it was an opportunity to stay by the river. The pictures looked inviting, and the reviews mentioning possibility to swim were promising. So I was fairly disappointed to discover upon arrival that the river has dried up, carrying certain charm away from the place.

The surrounding scenery was nevertheless wonderful. But without the river there is nearly nothing to do in the village. I enjoyed a short climb up the hill for the view of the canyon at sunset, and a walk along the river bed to finally find where some water still was.

PARKING

All cars are parked on the ground lot right in front the house; at no extra fee.

ROOM

Our room was situated on the top floor, under the roof. It was rather basic, but looked lovely and was warm as we arrived. Nicely illuminated and naturally heated by the setting sun.

Wooden walls keep warmth perfectly, and for those loving it hot, there was also an electric heater in the corner and extra blankets available in the wardrobe. But we like cold, and opened all three windows. It got much colder at night, so we had to eventually shut them.

The room was spacious enough. There were two beds moved together in the centre and an extra one by the opposite wall; also a dining table and some chairs. It was equipped with a fridge, a microwave (that we were happy to use), a CD player (sadly not always functioning smoothly), a toaster and a set of dishes and cutlery. Everything was clean and ready to be used.

The bed was comfy, mattresses and pillows were good, and the sleep promised to be perfect. Sadly, there was something disturbing for the dog during the night as it kept barking loudly for a long while, having wakened us up.

The bathroom had a toilette, a sink, a water-heater and a shower tube; all clean and functioning properly.

BREAKFAST

Not included into the room rate, cost EUR 5 per person and had to be agreed on its timing.

When we got downstairs the next morning, there was no one around. We waited for a while, and soon Ivica appeared to let us know that the breakfast has already been served behind the house, where we didn’t look. There was some juice, muesli and crunches, milk and yogurt, selection of jam and honey and bread, tea bags and instant coffee. Soon Ivica re-appeared with hot meals and kept asking if we wanted anything else.

It was cold and windy to eat outdoors early in the morning in October, but the thoughtfully provided shawls really helped.

OWNERS

I can’t praise them enough! Ivica was truly the most accommodating host I’ve ever met.

Say, we asked to e-mail us driving directions from Zagreb, but eventually made it from the opposite way and failed to find our turn off the road. After some phone guidance, Ivica was kind enough to drive up to the road, meet us there and escort right to his house.

He seemed to be ready to make just whatever the guests may fancy to ask for and never stopped asking if there was anything else he could do. Communicative, helpful and attentive; speaks very good English.

The owners are also animal-lovers. They keep a dog, a cat and - since recently - even a cute pony. All animals are very friendly, curious and «sociable».

Recommended

I can recommend this place as a very good overnight base to explore Plitvitse Lakes. But it’s best to have a car if you consider staying here. The Lakes are in a short drive away.
