The staff here are so friendly and welcoming, especially the owner Mel. I felt like part of the family from day one! It's a great location, near the beach in Sandy Bay, much less crowded than the spots in West End/Bay that get over run with the cruise ship crowd. The hostel is social without being too much of a party spot, and they make sure to enforce evening quiet hours for those that want to get a good night's sleep. They've got snorkel gear for rental and a small restaurant on site, so it's really got all you need right there. If you want to self cater, they have a kitchen and a massive grocery store is a two minute walk away. The pool is a great spot to chill out and find some respite from the heat, and the small rooftop patio has ocean views and it's a great place to relax and read or sip a beer. I ended up staying twice as long as I planned on because I enjoyed myself so much. This will definitely be my spot on Roatan whenever I go to visit. Thanks again Mel, John, Lindsay, Bruce, and Mel for a great stay!

A hidden gem of an oasis on the beautiful island of Roatan! As a solo traveler on a budget, who prefers a private room, I appreciated Roatan Backpackers many options. I decided on a single room with bathroom and it was perfect! Quiet, clean, private, with it's own very comfy hammock and muskoka chair for long hours of relaxing, what more can one woman need?! The staff are knowledgeable, kind and always available. And the pool and deck?! Perfect for long hours of enjoying the warm Honduran sun or making friends with the other travellers. I highly recommend Roatan Backpackers hostel as the perfect spot, especially if you're on a budget but even if your'e not, it's a precious spot to spend your time

We stayed in the Casita Grande for a week in February 2020 and it was spacious with a comfortable bedroom, plus very friendly, helpful staff. Shout out to Jean the manager and the owner Mel was always quick to respond to any queries. Nice pool area. Short drive to West End, West Bay and Gumbalimba park. For divers, there are companies within walking distance or all over the island (ziplining too). 20 minute drive to Roatan airport and Eldon grocery store where we stopped to buy groceries on our way from the airport to Roatan Hostel.

I initially reserved a private room for 2 weeks and then added a week.
Mel built this hostel from the ground up and her devotion shows with grounds that are beautifully cared for. There a variety of room options and great hospitality from the staff, and of course Mel herself.
Many unforgettable little parties with people from around the world even during Covid times.
The communal kitchen was well stocked and a supermarket is around the corner as is a convenient restaurant serving up baleadas and burritas for cheap.

I was looking for a place where i could access great snorkeling from the shore and I found it here. After a 5 - 10 minute walk, t's a brief relatively swim out to the reef at Sandy Bay and once there I saw pretty much everything at least once. It's wild snorkeling, you will not see other snorkelers.
I will be back to do video work there.
Thanks to Mel and staff.

Absolutely the best place to stay on Roatan. The small friendly hostel, which has plenty of private en suite rooms as well as sharing ones, nestles in a garden of luxuriant tropical vegetation. A coconut tree with coconuts was just outside my room! The room itself was spotlessly clean and comfortable with a balcony, where I could enjoy a morning coffee while looking down on the pool and the riot of flowers. The location is excellent, quiet and peaceful, just a few minutes walk from a couple of beaches with good snorkeling and 15 minutes by shared taxi to the tourist hotspot of West End. There's a big supermarket 3 mins walk away and several nice places to eat nearby. The home cooking at Samona's was delicious and a fraction of the price of the more upmarket restaurants. The botanical gardens are just up the road. Don't miss them. Mel, the owner and her assistant, Nikki, couldn't have been more helpful and welcoming. I dream of a return one day!

This place is great! I stayed here on a number of different occasions during my trip to Honduras over February and March of 2022.

Each time I stayed in a different room, so I’ve been all over the hostel. Each room was clean and had fresh sheets, towels, toiletries etc. The fans all worked in each room super well and kept me cool no problem, it’s quiet after dark so you can get a good nights rest, and the location is super safe and tucked away from the main road.

The setting is also beautiful, it’s essentially a jungle/garden with a pool and super nice places to hang out in and relax or meet people.

I met so many amazing people here and I’ve ended up staying in touch with many of them. We rented a vehicle and explored some of the eastern part of the island all together, which was a great experience. As a solo traveler, it’s important to meet people where you’re staying and all of the people I met were friendly and down to earth here.

Mel, who runs the hostel is an amazing person. She is so helpful and kind and genuinely cares about the welfare of the travelers staying at her hostel. She also arranged our vehicle rental and had many tips about the island and recommendations to check out. I’m already looking forward to stopping by and saying hello when I visit again. As well as checking in on Bandito, the small black lab puppy who I’m sure will be full grown by the time I return.

Overall, so happy I stayed here and will be back! Highly recommend Roatán Backpackers Hostel!

I stayed at Roatan Backpackers hostle for 1 week and the staff there is so nice. Mel especially is such a kind soul who really cares about you as a traveler. She recommended to me some great spots around the island to check out. The people you meet here are really also interesting and there is a really nice patio area to hangout after a long day of exploring.

The location is in Sandy bay, which is way less touristic than West Bay or West End. If you plan to stay here it would be a good idea to rent a scooter from the hostle.

When I come back to Roatan I will be sure to stay here again!

Roatan has so much to see but many resorts are very expensive (200$ a night), the backpackers hostel allows you to visit this island paradise on a budget. The place has a pool with a waterfall, great communal areas (loved the upper deck 'lizard lounge') and you can tell this owner is down to earth and loved by her dedicated staff and volunteers. Having access to a kitchen means huge savings on restaurants which I generally prefer to do especially since the grocery store is a short walk away. The on site restaurant is a well priced alternative or If you have some extra money (beware tourist area restaurants aren't cheap) there are many beautiful restaurants (even sushi) a quick taxi ride away (you can catch one anytime on the main road less than a block from the hostel). Overall, considering covid has been brutal on hostels this place is a must for any weary traveler. I read another review of 1 star and had heard about that man from some locals! How he had come to the hostel to volunteer, seemed happy about it to stay for free for a month, then disappeared leaving behind his things requiring the owner to contact the embassy thinking something had happened to him! Sadly, sounds like mental illness while traveling alone :( This is my second visit to Roatan and both times stayed at the Backpackers hostel, honestly, where else can you get a safe room for 35$ US ?! :) I stayed in one of the repurposed storage containers, see photos, who knew it could be so nice in one!

I love this place so much. The hostel itself has great facilities - clean rooms, clean communal kitchen and the pool is definitely the best hostel pool I've ever been in. There are great areas throughout the hostel to hang out with friends or to read, learn Spanish, workout etc. The hostel isn't in West end but you can get there in 5 minutes by collectivo for around 1 dollar. The location itself in sandy bay is perfect - a supermarket 2 minutes walk away, excellent fruit and veg stall across the road, a few comedors within 2 minute walk and the best snorkeling on the island 5 minute walk away too. If you want to dive they have discount with an excellent dive centre who will collect and drop you at the hostel. Most of the dive sites are actually in sandy bay too which is really handy. Its pretty close to the airport and ferry ports too. The staff and guests here are so nice. Mel the owner is great, really helpful and kind. The volunteers are also very helpful and friendly. If you are looking for somewhere to stay in Roatan this is place!

This was my second time visiting the hostel, and was there for a week this time. I stayed in the two bedroom apartment (same as last time). There was a mini fridge with freezer which was the perfect size as the major grocery store is one block away. There is a two-burner hot plate stove and bare necessities for pots and pans. There is also hot water in the apartment, although the hot and cold handles are opposite to what I am used to - hot on right. The air conditioning kept things cool.

It is within walking distance to Sandy Bay beach and local eateries that make excellent baleadas that are very inexpensive. It is also within walking distance to Sandy Bay Divers. It is convenient to walk to the end of the street to catch a bus for $1 US to West End.

Wifi was sketchy at times, but for $8 US, you can get a sim card and 12gig of data that lasts for one week. Top-up of data is $4/week. Mel directed me where to walk locally to purchase this.

The atmosphere is excellent, with guests from all over the world. Mel was a great host, and very knowledgeable of the Island.

Overall, I had an excellent stay!

Considere volar.
