Panaji is a great place to break your journey if travelling between north and south Goa. Some lovely old Portuguese buildings and seriously good restaurants such as Viva Panjim, it feels at times that one is in Central America or even Portugal itself, not India. Certainly an affluent and quiet city by Indian standards.

Thought this place looked cool and tried to book from overseas to no avail. Luckily there was room for one night when we turned up as this place was great. Run by a very friendly family who even organised a special deal for us at another hotel the following night as they were booked out. Also great travel advice and...

Beautiful on the outside. Right in the center of Fountainhas and short walk to city center. Rooms are nothing fancy, large enough for queen bed, small table and 2 straight chairs. Be prepared for very firm mattress. Plenty of hot water for shower. Very friendly and helpful staff who can help you get a table at the nearby Viva Panjim....

We stayed at Afonso Guest House for three nights with our children. It is in an old house in a lovely neighborhood close to central Panaji, with easy walking distance to church square, shopping etc. We were very pleased to stay there and recommend it to others. We enjoyed breakfast on the roof-top verandah and the consistent WiFi. Rooms were...

We were here for 4 nights. We were in love with the place. It was a Goan Heritage house. Extremely clean and brilliantly maintained by Clifton and Mrs. Afonso. They are very warm hosts and nice people. A must visit for any traveler to Panjim who wants to experience the "Portuguese" heritage. We came here after staying in South goa...

My wife Sachne and I enjoyed this quiet oasis from which to explore the town of panjim. It is an authentic Portuguese style guest house with a lovely roof top terrace for morning breakfast (pre-order some Portuguese buns!). Very clean. With every thing you need and nothing you don't. Jeanette was great, welcoming and very helpful. Highly recommend it.

My partner and I stayed here for three nights in November before heading to south Goa for the beeches. It was a fantastic stay, we were very well looked after, the breakfast was yummy, and the manager was incredibly kind to give us plenty of recommendations about where to visit, what to see and do. They also went above and...

The reputation of Afonso is well deserved. Jeanette and her family provided us with a very pleasant 2 night stay while providing delicious breakfast on the rooftop terrace and valuable information about the area. As we had a late overnight bus, she allowed us to leave our luggage while we ventured out and also let us relax on the rooftop...

Rooms are very cleans and big with fans, AC, Hot water, and comfortable bed. The place is well located with nice restaurants and shop around. The rooftop is cute with...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Afonso Guest House, run by Panaji's reputed Afonso family, is more than just a guest house to its many patrons. Nestled in the capital city's quaint Latin quarter of Fontainhas, it is a veritable bridge between Goa's Portuguese past and Indian present. A favoured haunt for many an adventurous traveller for over two decades, its hospitality and peppy spirit show no sign of aging and are still as fresh as they were back then. It makes no pretense of being luxurious; instead, Afonso Guest House prides itself in being simplistic and practical. With its friendly and welcoming hosts, it's truly your home away from home-clean and functional, the rooms are airy, and equipped with everything a traveller might need. However, the clincher is its lovely terrace graced with potted plants where traditional Goan breakfasts are served to guests every morning, overlooking the whitewashed St Sebastian Chapel. So, if you seek home in a foreign land, come over! Really! You won't regret it. ... more   less
