We just got back from our honeymoon and stayed there. If you walk to the closest beach it's about 15 minutes. They also offer bikes you can ride at no charge. We rented one of their scooters to use during our stay which made access to ALL parts of the island a breeze. Their cost was a bit more than some places on the island but a much safer bet since many of the places on the island will scam you and try to charge you for the tiniest of scratches that may have already been there. I think the cost translated to less than $15 dollars a day which is about the same price a taxi would charge you for both ways to any one location. Long winded I know, but hope it helps

Taxis on Koh Tao are very expensive in relation to cost vs distance travelled. We have negotiated better rates from one taxi driver. His taxi from our Villas to Sairee is 200 THB until 8pm then increases to 300 THB afterwards. Local taxis found in Sairee can be more.
We have had hundreds of guests that haven't rented a scooter and have had no problems. A scooter is a good idea though as it helps you explore the island without having to rely on taxis. You can always park the scooter at the bottom of our hill.
Only the last 100m of the 5 minute walk is unlit at night but your villa has a small torch which you can take with you. Taxis are available from anywhere on Koh Tao.
We hope that helps.

Taxis are not cheap and I believe it was 400 baht to/from town in the evening and taxis are always readily available. The walk is not well lit but we carried a flash light at all times. The villa is up a fairly steep hill so if you are physically fit, you can do the walk back to the villas in about 15 minutes. It would be a fairly easy scooter ride as well.
