This hotel is veryyyy different from a lot of hotels i have been at.. the cabanas are really awesome everything work really good!! Really clean rooms and bathrooms. The restaurant has a good service(breakfast included) and they have a big menu(thai food, pastas, pizzas, burgers) i would recommend this hotel if you want a different experience the beach is really nice and separated from the rest of the island because there is nothing else to the right side(really like the privacy). The staff is really friendly and respectful. They have a shuttle service when you go on and either when you leave. I would recommend this hotel a 100%!!!! Great experience..

We were there 3 nights. Cabins are great very luxurious. They can easily hold a family of 4 although you do need extra beds ordered. In terms of safety it's not so ideal for kids at low age. there are some serious drops with low railing. Staff is amazing!! So friendly. Beach is not so much for swimming but they do have a nice pool area. Only major problem for us was the horde of mosquitos which basically attacked us when we left our room or the pool water. It did ruin it for us.

Arrived at Koh Toa and found the transfer for our hotel which was free - always good. They didn't have our name on their sheet of people for collection but after showing our hotel booking confirmation no further questions asked.

We turned up at the hotel and they couldn't find our booking, not likely their fault as we booked through hotels.com so maybe it didn't go through properly? Anyway, the lady who greeted us on reception was very pleasant, friendly and helpful. The pop corn and refreshing drink on arrival was welcome.

The Room:

We were shown to our room which was a treetop cottage with a great view over the bay - very different and pleasant. We each had a go in the hammock on the balcony as well which was nice. The bed was very comfy and had a mosquito net around the bed which was good and the room itself was large.

Be warned - the shower and toilet are outside so if you don't mind doing your business with a few small spiders in the room then you'll be fine!

Our room had a construction site behind it, we think they are building more cottages higher up the complex. This started around 8/8:30 am each morning with drilling, sawing and the usual noises associated with construction. We were not told of this at check in which annoyed us a little bit, we're not ones for lying in all day but we'd done a lot of travelling round and walking so we were not best pleased.

The facilities:

The waterfall pool was out of action so at check in, we were offers 1000 baht to spend at the Rim Lae restaurant (I'll get to that later...). We were a little disappointed with the sun beds by the beach. The staff weren't the most friendly when asking for towels and mattresses for the sun beds and it made it a bit awkward when we had to go back the second day knowing this.

Also, where do I get a drink from?!? There is no bar by the sun beds at the beach and no service taking orders. This made us leave the complex, wonder down a couples hundred yards and go somewhere else on both days! I'm sure it would be busier by the beach if they offered this. Business opportunity missed? We were the only ones there on both occasions.

The restaurant, whilst featuring a lovely setting, was very quiet with no atmosphere whatsoever. The food and breakfast was all okay but we only ate there due to the food vouchers as we favour the less touristy and more local restaurants.

It just felt like something was missing...

Negative reviews for this place have been based on the state of the beach and if you have come to sairee beach to swim you are in the wrong place. My partner and I were in Thailand for 20 days and we had plans to only stay 2 nights in koh Tao but after 2 nights in our honeymoon VIP suite we couldn't leave. We ended up staying for 5 nights. The view was stunning, the staff were on top of everything- any problems we had they solved within minutes. I am so surprised this place doesn't have an excellent rating! Thank you koh Tao cabanas for making our stay unforgettable!

Overall, we had a lovely stay at Cabana and would have liked to have given more stars but the resort has some major flaws that cannot be swept under the carpet. Things did not get off to the best of starts as our transfer did not arrive, and when we phoned to see what was happening, on the first occasion, the resort did not pick up the phone. On the second occasion, they put the phone down on us (I'm believing it was accidental). After making our own way there (and paying for the taxi), the staff were not very apologetic for what had happened but for the sake of not getting stressed on our holiday, we did not make a big deal about it all. We were taken to our fantastic hut which was close to the beach, which also had a great outside shower which felt like you were even closer to nature! All good. However, things went massively down hill later in the evening as excessive noise from the beach bars about half a mile away were were blasting dodgy EDM music with an MC (I'm sure he even said "make some noise Koh Tao massive at one point"!) that was so loud even with using the ear plugs provided (take that as a warning sign) that getting to sleep until it calmed down after 2am was not a possibility. There was nobody available on reception until the morning so until then we just had to make do. In the morning, luckily the staff on reception seemed to be chirpier and understanding and we were upgraded to a villa which was in a quieter area of the resort. The villa itself is made of stone and was beautiful with some cool lighting fixtures. Most importantly though, we were able to sleep for our remaining time there. With regards to the other amenities, they should have been amazing, but unfortunately need sorting out. The restaurant itself looks great and has loads of chill areas if you just fancy kicking back with a drink. Sadly, the food on offer was below par, especially given the high standard of food generally across Koh Tao. It was such a shame as the staff in the restaurant were very lovely, and the restaurant setting is incredible with probably one of the best views of the beach. They should be packed out even if it is with guests not staying at the resort, similar to other restaurants at resorts nearby. They need to have a rethink about what they are doing here and look at what could and can be done to sort it out. Primarily though, a new chef would be a great start. Get that right and they can then market the restaurant as a destination point for others. The swimming pool area is really nice even though the waterfall of 'Waterfall Pool' was broken. Staff there were very friendly and amaiable. Unfortunately it was the opposite at the beach beds where service was extremely slow where we were still waiting for mattresses after 25 minutes. There were no other guests in this area so cannot imagine what the service would be like if they were actually busy. When someone did finally come and see us, he was so aloof and unfriendly we felt like we were massively putting him out. However, it is what it is, and we just got on with having a nice time. To summarise, Cabana definitely has some of the nicest accommodation we saw in Koh Tao around Sairee Beach, and on that basis I would recommend staying there, just go for a villa away from the beach if you value your sleep, don't rely on eating any nice food there, some (not all) appear a bit demotovated and unfriendly, and be prepared your free transfer may not turn up!

This was our second visit to Koh Tao Cabana. Still enjoying the grounds and the rooms, but the staff/service is no longer very good.

The pro:
* The Deluxe Patio Villa rooms are wonderful, and one of the reasons we came back.
* The grounds and the hotel buildings are so original and tastefully designed

The cons:
* Bad service! We felt like the staff were kicking us out all the time
* The beach is not clean anymore, muddy/polluted and with oil spills, not a place to swim. Not really the hotels fault, but it still had a big impact on our stay.

So the "hard" product is quite good, the grounds, the rooms etc. Although it had lost some of its charm from two years ago when there were flower decorations everywhere and everything was more kept up. Now the fountains were barely running and standards had clearly fallen back.

The service was a problem. Breakfast closes at 10.30. At 10, they start clearing out the restaurant and clean tables. At 10.15, they let you know it's last-last orders. At 10.29 they start taking down the buffet. And if you want an extra cup of coffee at 10.31, forget it!
At dinner, we were very surprised when they started sweeping floors at 21.30. We asked when they closed and they said at 23.00. At 22.00 it was made clear they wanted to go home, and at 22.15 they put the bill on our table without us asking. Really rude.
The pool shuts at 18.00. At 17.15 they start clearing it out....at 17.59 you are told to leave...etc.
The beachside guy was openly hostile, it was a struggle just to get a beach mattress from him.
With a few exceptions among the waiter/restaurant staff, the rest of the hotel staff seemed disinterested and were quite rude.
As we were leaving with a 3pm boat, we asked for a late checkout. Hotel was almost empty in low-season, but we were told it was a "policy" not to give late checkouts and we had to leave room by 11.. We managed to negotiate it to 1pm after several rounds of discussion, the next problem was their taxi which was leaving at 1.30 - too early for us, again they were extremely unflexible and only granted our wishes at "gunpoint".
Breakfast vouchers were another nightmare...shouldnt they just have a list in the restaurant instead of pestering their guests with paperwork?

So...it was a mixed experience. This hotel has the potential for being a real gem. Right now Koh Tao Cabana needs some love & attention from management and better staff training.

All are nice. Key thing is whether you are party animals or not. If you are you will be fine. Otherwise suggest a different, quiet hotel.
