This is a large house turned into a guesthouse. Our bedroom had a large bed with mosquito net, desk with chair, one bedside table and AC. There was kind of a corridor going to the bathroom (all just for us) where there was a fridge and a rack to hang clothes. The bathroom was spacious. Everything was very clean. Towels, hand soap, toilet paper and two small bottles of drinking water were provided. On our request they served us bed tea at 7 am. We did not have any meals here. The house has several large sitting areas for everybody to use (one also with TV) so it would also be nice if you are a small group who wants to hang out together a little bit. There was also an ironing board with iron in the corridor in case you need to get ready for a business meeting. The house is on a side road so it was quiet in the night and we slept well. Free WiFi was available downstairs.

This delightful guesthouse is in a quiet residential area of Anuradhapura. The owners are friendly and helpful. Price is very reasonable. Home cooked food is always served with a smile. The Sri Lankan omelet with a good breakfast is recommended. I also had hoppers for dinner with a nice dahl and the onion sambal was delicious. The garden area is peaceful and relaxing. Within the guesthouse there are nice areas to relax, either on the balcony (with a cool evening breeze) on in the several areas inside. The room was comfortable with all amenities needed. Mosquito need was over the bed, but I did not need it, and I seem to attract mosquitos! This is a clean and comfortable guesthouse.

It is easy to give Montana Rest a positive review as there is nothing to criticise. It is clean, comfortable and well-run with excellent food. Even though it is in a quiet location, the New Bus Stand and shops are about 10 minutes walk away. We would stay here again without hesitation!

After reading many hotel reviews, Montana Rest was a good choice. Rooms were very clean and the staff were super helpful. The manager actually told us to treat the place as if it was our home. They arranged bikes for us to tour the sacred city and tuk tuks for us to get to and from the rail station. The only one downfall is the food. Sri Lankan breakfast was delicious but anything else on the menu was not very good. I would stick with Sri Lankan curries when staying here.

Everything we needed: Warm welcome, friendly staff, really good English spoken and excellent advice & suggestions from arrival. Tuktuk arranged within few hours of our arrival to take us to Mihintale Buddah's shrine in time for sunset. Bikes available for tour of Sacred City. Excellent breakfast & evening meal, really tasty & great variety & value mix of curry dishes. Jagath deserves special thanks for all his help. Room very comfy, quiet, lots of indoor & outdoor seating areas. Excellent value.

What score should I give a place that was beyond excellent until checkout when it turned very strange? My husband and I stayed six nights. The room was fine, there were very nice common areas, the place is kept extremely clean, the food was wonderful for both breakfast and dinner, and the staff were pleasant and helpful. Until checkout I would have certainly recommended this place in a shorter review, but now I just don’t know.

All I can do is recount what happened at checkout and let the readers know that I wrote the owner/manager an email about it, but have not received a response for one week. I consider the lack of response to be an admission that they did something wrong. Or did the email get intercepted by a staff member? Or would they rather reply on this site?

It was very surprising to be told at the moment of checkout that they could not accept a credit card. We were told that this was due to a system problem that had existed for a couple of days. We cannot understand why they did not let us know well before the last minute that there was the possibility of a problem, particularly because the bill was large, given our six night stay and food expenses On top of that, we had asked for the detailed and multi-item bill 15 minutes before we were actually checking out so that we could confirm all of the details and they didn’t even inform us at that time.

We offered to leave our credit card details for them to charge the card when the system was restored, but they declined. Fortunately, we had withdrawn enough money at an ATM so that we could pay our next accommodation, but the need for cash at the Montana Rest meant needing to find a working ATM on the way to the bus station and on the third try succeeding, while incurring extra charges from both that bank and our home bank. We could not figure out why they had not let us know until the moment of checkout,. For example, was it because they were trying to avoid a service charge of their own? We don’t know why, but it was very odd behaviour.

The incident was deeply disappointing after an otherwise great stay and now is even more disappointing given that they did not respond to our email. All I can suggest when intending to use a credit card is to reconfirm with them in enough time before checkout that they will accept it.

Best bang for buck. Friendly staff. Would recommend.

The food was not exceptional, but served the purpose. It is a little bit inside A'pura and the road leading to it may feel a bit shady at first. But it is okay. Name board is not visible from the main road. Keep the picture in your head. Exact location is available in Google Maps.

As many previous reviews already mention, it is a quite new, well maintained hotel. Tastefully furnished and quiet. However, the outstanding staff just made the difference. Everything seems possible and easy to organize. A tour to the ancient sites, taxi to Kandy or banana flower curry. We special y want to thank Jagath who even managed to get us some precious organic, home made coconut oil. We have been searching for that quality without success for a while. Ask Jagath if you are on the hunt for the best coconut oil!

My husband and I stayed here for one night on our honeymoon. Upon arrival we were impressed by the building design and cleanliness of the premises. We made it to our bathroom and started having doubts. The bathroom had a terrible smell, mold around the tiles on the floor, the shower splashed all over the toilet and there were ants everywhere. They quickly came to spray leaving hundreds of dead ants for us to clean up.
They were very attentive when we had a WIFI issue, bringing us our own router to our room which was great. We asked them to ordered us a tuk tuk driver to bring us to the ancient city and then they coerced us into paying him for a tour after we had made it very clear we wanted to rent bicycles.
In the evening we had to send our dinner back because it was cold -- but the price of dinner was 1/4 of other guest house prices which made us feel better.
In the morning I went to put on my pants and hadn't noticed that red ants had overtaken my bag during the night. After being stung all over my legs, they apologized and offered no compensation -- therefore we had a terrible experience and although it seems like they were trying their best, it really missed the mark. VERY DISAPPOINTING . . .

Just here for 2 nights but memorable for the right reasons. Comfortable room with good AC, excellent bathroom with hot water and lobby area and own balcony. But wonderful communal upstairs lounge and dining outside. Adored the choice of 5 Sri Lankan breakfasts. Lovely house in quiet safe area cannot recommend highly enough
