Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travellers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
This is the first time I visited the Lakeside hotel after they renovated it. The rooms were good, comfortable beds and clean bed and bathroom linen. The regular amenities such as soap, body wash, shower caps, shampoo and body lotion was available. Hot water did work!
The one thing I was less happy about was that they had non dairy milk powder for making tee/coffee in the room.
We could order tea instead and we did, and that was a really refreshing cuppa!! (at a cost of course :) )
Very attentive staff, from the reception desk to the room boy. They were all smiling looking and sounding cheerful despite the present business situation. But it did appear that many people have taken up their special offer so the occupancy was okay I presume.
As for food, the breakfast and dinner buffet spread was reasonable. Quite understand that they need to economise. they did have a variety of desserts too. The food tasted okay, trust they will improve on it.
Whilst serving the buffet the staff adhered to all the required COVID 19 regulations. They were gloved, face masked and also wore the protective face gear.
The lunch buffet served at the wedding reception was exceptional. Full marks to the chef and his kitchen team!! The fruit carvings done as decoration was the work of a genius.
All in all, it was a pleasant stay at the lakeside and we came back home with fond memories of the warm smiley faces of the staff members.

A lovely hotel with polite and professional staff. Rooms are spacious and beautifully clean. Small balconies and good air conditioning. Shower was hot and good water pressure. Evening meal options were excellent, varied menu, freshly cooked and good portions. Advised to pre order which was ideal. Perfect breakfast. Plenty of choice for Sri Lankan and western taste. Fresh baked cakes and biscuits. Most of the buffet was regularly refreshed (slight disappointment that fresh fruit appeared to run out just after 8am). Great options on egg station. Grounds need a bit of an update. Communal areas very nice. Fair price in bar and for dinner menu. Staff very helpful and will refill water bottles on request.

We went there on a family visit. Although the rooms were rather old, it had a quaint rustic charm. Room was clean. All toiletries and tea making equipment were supplied. There was a good AC, TV and Mini fridge. One notable lack was that of a safe. The welcome was great and friendly. Check in was a breeze even with the added covid security measures. Location is superb. Nice views of the Nuwara wewa lake with easy access to the shore of the lake. Food was the highlight. They had set menus during the visit due to low guest numbers. But we didn't feel the lack of a buffet. The food tasted great, and the courses were prepared in true gourmet fashion. They had incorporated fresh ingredients from the surrounding including succulent lake fish. They were quick to adjust to all the requests we had regarding special items for us and the kids. Be sure to ask for their lake fish recipes. They are great. Pool was nice. There was a bit of flotsam coming in probably from the surrounding trees. But they quickly clean it out. Baby pool was closed for renovations.

Although slightly faded, this is a very elegant hotel in a renovated colonial building. It has some impressive mid-century modern features, such as the open reception area, views right through the building and the concrete screen along the landing. There is a generous swimming pool and the hotel stands in nice grounds with beautiful trees set back from the road. Staying for three nights, we had a large, clean room, the hotel providing everything we needed at a lower price than many hotels we stayed at in Sri Lanka. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. It provides an excellent base for exploring the ancient ruins of Anaradhupura. We had a view of the pool and lake from our room, but the balcony only had a bench so did not prove very useful. The only other downside was the slightly slow service in the restaurant and the rather boring menu, largely geared to foreign tourists. Many group tours use this hotel.

My stay during quarantine was great and must say the best service in comparison to other hotels where some of my friends stayed. All my requirements were provided as soon as I called the one touch service center. There was a variety of food provided over the 14 days and happy with the content and also facilities provided to in side the room for tea, coffee and herbal tea. They never forget to call us daily and check about quality of food and any other our requirement.
I would like to thanks to the front office staff,room service staff,Chef's and special thanks for the Medical officer and his team. I wish the hotel well in the future.. Thank you for hotel management..!! S.Suranga Pathirana

Stayed here for two nights. The place has the feel of a resort. It had a spacious lobby. The room was fine. There were tea but no coffee making facilities in the room. The grounds were pretty; the pool, inviting. It is located on the far side of the Nurewa Wewa relative the ancient site. Staff was always excellent and always smiling. I liked the breakfast better than the dinner in that the latter buffet seemed more price to the clientele than range of options.

Stayed 1 night. The staff were very friendly, the evening meal was ok but not the best I had on my trip. There was a good selection of curries etc, The room unfortunately had a damp ,musty smell and if I was staying more than 1 night would have asked to move rooms. Had a view of the bins!!. The room was clean though and had the usual facilities.

On 17th December 2022 about 1400 hours, I was riding a bicycle, my clothes were wet after riding many km/s, so I came to the lake entrance at the back side of the hotel. The gate was locked. 2 or 3 people came, not to welcome the guest but to open the gate. They asked a number of questions before opening the gate. I was sweating, and asked for a refreshing face towel once I came to the hotel lobby, but they didn't give me. I was satisfied with the wash room facial tissues. The meal menu was nicely presented, it took time to read and select a meal or a drink. Once I chose some items were not available, eg. Lake fish was not available at the lakefront hotel. Not only food but also beverages including fresh fruit juice and foreign liquor. The waiter who served my table was not trained enough. He did not first serve the ladies first sitting at the table. Not professional at all. [ I invited a couple of my friends to meet me at the hotel lobby ]I observed ongoing poor standards at Nuwara Wewa Rest House, the oldest 4 star hotel at Anuradhapura. Dear Guest, We apologize for the inconvenience caused to you and very much regret for the disappointment. We would like to inform you that the back gate which our staff had let you in, was not an entrance to the hotel but the entrance to the lake bund from the hotel. This gate is always kept locked due to security concern and will be opened only if any guest asks to go to the lake bund. The main entrance to the hotel is on the other side facing the main road, where there are security staff to send you directly to the reception. Our reception staffs are there to welcome you and help you with your requirement. Some of our hotel services had been changed with the re-opening after Covid 19 pandemic, to be in line with operational guidelines issued by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. Still, we are following the same, as we are a “Safe and Secure Certified” hotel. That’s why you were not offered a Cold Towel. Food and Beverage items in the menus were also reduced as per the guidelines and ingredients for some of the slow-moving items may unavailable as we don’t keep frozen items for a longer span. As you may aware, we still have issues with some supplies due to the prevailing situation in the country. We apologize once again for the inconvenience caused in the restaurant and will pay more attention to maintain our usual guest service.

We have stayed at Lakeside many times in the past, from the time it used to be known as the Nuwarawewa Rest House. This is a beautiful place, very centrally located to all the historic sites in Anuradhapura. We stayed only one night, had a lunch and a dinner. The service at the hotel was excellent. Meals were fresh and delicious. Service was by Manoj who was friendly and professional. I have to make special mention of the honesty of staff. I have left behind my wallet with money, cards and US drivers license. This was found by room boy Lasantha and was handed over to the front office. Thilini from front office called me during our trip back to Colombo and made arrangements to deliver this herself. This is outstanding customer service by the staff at Lakeside, proving they are this hotel’s most valuable asset. The occupancy was low during our stay as we observed, and I feel some good marketing and promotional programs could help this place immensely. Thank you and we will visit again.

We only stayed for one night during our tour of Sri Lanka but the hotel was in the perfect location, close to historical sites but also lovely and quiet. Clean pool, clean room and great shower. Food and service excellent with a good good variety of cuisines and enjoyed the sandwiches for lunch as well as the traditional sri lankan curry and rice dishes in the evening. Prices great and staff very friendly and welcoming
