We travelled in December 2018 whilst my wife was expecting our first child, and were drawn by the beautiful photos and idyllic landscape shots promising a quiet retreat. Our main draw was the spa for my wife, who was looking forward to relaxing massages The rooms are named after yoga poses, but there is no yoga centre or yoga teacher.

We spent seven nights here and used it as a base to see the central part of Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful villa overlooking Lake Victoria. The breeze passes through the house making it a very cool place to rest and relax. The rooms are large and comfortable with everything you may need. The staff is ever obliging and willing to accomodate most requests. The Sri Lankan and English breakfast are good with excellent fruit platters and freshly squeezed juices. The dinners are not gourmet if you don’t choose the local food but are absolutely fine. The Sri Lankan food though is excellent. The pool is beautifully clean and a welcome spot to spend some time. It is not licensed so BYO wine. They provide glasses and a fridge to chill it should you need it. Perfectly feasible to visit the tea plantations, the spice growing area, Kandy itself etc from here and have the luxury of coming back to the same bed. It is run by two delightful men and a chef who do all they can to make you feel at home. Highly recommended.

After a long day travelling we arrived at The Hermitage. It's difficult to find as there didn't seem to be any signage on the road. Once checked in we were shown to our room and asked to select our meals for dinner from the menu, we assumed, to give the chef time to prepare. Once seated for dinner we requested a bottle of wine only to discover there was no wine or any type of alcohol available. The waiter said they had no license! While we waited, we heard the distinct ping of the microwave as our meals were heated. They were served barely warm on the outside of the plate and COLD in the middle. Our room was nice and the linen was beautiful but there were NO facilities to make tea or coffee, no iron. Only ONE operating power outlet. Only ONE light worked in the very dim bathroom. The staff were friendly but we would never return to The Hermitage.

After reading mixed reviews online, we were a bit hesitant to go ahead with this property but went with our intuitions anyway. The property is a 30 minutes drive from Kandy town and does not have any boards or signs of its existence. An unmarked detour leads to this lush property. The property is constructed beautifully in the most eco-friendly way to ensure the trees and nature remains. This airy property faces lake Victoria and has only 3 rooms. We stayed in the superior room, which is tastefully furnished, has a lovely bathroom with tub views of the pool and lake and an open shower that can turn interesting when it rains. They have two amazing staff ever ready to cater to your needs at any time of the day or night. We were so in love with the property that leaving it to go sightseeing was tough. It was home away from home for us. We read reviews of their wine collection not being up to the mark, so brought our own bottle at Colombo Airport (very reasonable). As for the food, it is priced on the higher side and can improve. Our special thanks to Supun & Pushpa for ensuring that we have the most amazing stay. Stay here to enjoy nature, forest sounds, amazing views and some ROMANCE!

To open your blinds to the the forest of birdsong looking over Lake Victoria is a moment to cherish forever. Hard not to think of Caliban in Shakespeare's The Tempest: "...the isle is full of noises, Sounds and sweet airs, that give delight and hurt not. Ready to drop upon me that, when I waked, I cried to dream again." The rooms are authentically Edwardian - ours had an amazing stone floored bathroom. And you really do feel you are in a retreat, away from everything. The concept of having just one or two staff on hand to help takes some getting used to but they are incredible good at everything, including dinner and breakfast. Give yourself a full day there, just lazing around and breathing in pure nature.
