The Metropolis Tourist Home on Pahar Ganj was one of my favourite places to stay n Delhi. I went there yesterday (27 September 2022) expecting to enjoy a wonderful lunch in the rooftop restaurant - but to my surprise and horror, I discovered it is closed. The hotel sign boards are down, and it looks as if it has been shut for some time.

I've just stayed at this hotel and felt obliged to write a review so you know what you're getting. My friend and I spent quite a while reading reviews of this and other hotels in the mid range of the lonely planet, and there were good and bad reviews for each place, it was difficult to make a choice.
The hotel is at the better end of the bazaar, where the street is a bit wider and not as grimy. Its still the bazaar though, so its dirty and busy all the time, so be prepared for that. Our room was a very large room at the top, it was quiet, with AC, a couple of fans, and even a fridge. The room itself was ok, plain with no character, but sheets and walls were clean. The staff were the friendliest that i came across in India, and seemed interested in helping us with advice on various things. We ate at the restaurants upstairs and down, and thought the food was good too. This place is by no means the Ritz, but for Delhi i think its really ok. MY first night in Delhi was spent in a smaller, cheaper hotel in the middle of the bazaar and it was quitre a nasty experience, a tiny room which felt very dirty.

Good old Metropolis used to be one of the best hotels in the Main Bazar neighborhood, but now several other new hotels have come and Metropolis has lost. We have visited the hotel many times and been very pleased, but the last time in March 2020 was a disappointment. The rooms are still good but the rest is not maintained and there are only a few guests. The former, excellent open restaurant, which was always full of guests, is closed. The food in their basement restaurant is not interesting and there are almost no customers, although nearby restaurants are full. The facade is in decay. Parts has been falling down. Unfortunately, it has gone downhill for Metropolis.

Me and my friend arrived at the hotel on a rainy night at 8.00 p.m. after making a reservation through agoda. The manager tried to scam us by saying that our reserved room is already occupied and there is no similar room available. He offered us a room with much higher price.

This was our first visit to India. I have to say, this made a very bad impression in the back of our minds.

I have been to the Metropolis tourist home in the Paharganj area since i wanted a mid range place and this one was supposed to be one the best in this category according to Lonely planet.

I paid 1400 rs/night(24 euros) for a very mediocre room poorly furnished. There were no amenities at all in the bathroom, there was no hot water most of the time and the shower pressure was really weak.
It was impossible to adjust the air con since it was broken. They give you only one sheet(good thing that i had mine) .There was a tiny tv.
On the good side, the room was clean and big and the rooftop restaurant is good.

Overall i had the feeling that this place was overpriced(2star price for what is really a backpacker guesthouse) and i will probably not come back to this hotel.

We stayed three nights, not cheapest place but good prices compared to others very expencive in connaughat place, which is very closed. The hotel seems very good at first look but the sheets were with holes and there were beatles in the bath. We spent 2000rps which could be considered a bit high for the place but still good. The restaurant is ok, nothing special in the menù, and not cheap.

Well, we decided to spend our last night in India in this hotel as we had read some pretty decent reviews but..we've been asked to pay in advance (for the first time since we had arrived in India 2 weeks before..) and, surprise, hot water was not available..We phoned the reception immediately and they sent for a "mechanic" (to use their own words) who worked for some time on the boiler..and couldn't fix it..again we phoned reception but to no avail..They morning after we complained to the hotel manager who looked quite puzzled (if a little amused..) and proposed no viable solution, nor any sort of compensation..to cut it short: avoid this place, for the same money (1500 rupees per night) you can certainly find a better place, and surely a better service, even in Pahar Ganj

Yes but only if the manager is at reception. If there is some other staff then they will say, machine is not working or there is no paper slip in the machine. They seems to be taught to say that way.
