I have stayed here three times in the past 6 months, twice alone and once with several collegaues. This hotel is a great price point in a great part of the city. It is very close to the intersection of Huaihai Rd and Maoming Rd. A little hard to find, since it is tucked at the back of a side...

This boutique hotel is hidden in an alley of the South Maoming Road in the French Concession area. At first, I thought the taxi driver dropped us at a wrong spot. I just couldn't believe there would be a decent hotel in that alley. But, just 5 steps further and there was this little gem. The room was very spacious...

I thought this was much better than one of the best hotel that i stayed in the golden triangle on the same trip if you really want a local shanghai feel. This hotel is strategically located in French Consession and it was newly opened when i stayed there last year. Most taxis were not aware of this hotel and the...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
