Totally unique, tasteful and engrossing decoration. The room is to be enjoyed - not just used as lugagge storage!! Espresso sipping, daydreaming, espresso sipping, book reading, espresso sipping. You get the idea. When was the last time you did that? No, airport waiting lounges don't count. TV faced the sleeping area. Useful to also face the sitting area. But actually...

Fantastic place to stay, a gorgeous and relaxing bubble in the midst of Shanghai...only trouble visiting in the middle of winter was finding the motivation to leave the warm and inviting room with it's beautiful views and actually get out and about...

On one side, a fab, funky room with the perfect view to the 21st century Chinese miracle, from Suzhou Creek to Pudong. On the other side, a door opening to a corridor in a run down art deco building pulsating with real life. Who needs the drab uniformity of the Hiltons and Hyatts? This is the real deal - a...

Hotels (1 to 5 stars) are basically all the same. As an ex hotel manager for multinational Hotels on 3 different continents, I know the difference. If you consider yourself a traveler and you would like to see and experience how the locals live in Shanghai, then Chai is the place. Not only are the apartments located in one of...

From handling the booking to saying goodbye, Chai Living did it all with class and warmth. Our room (blue porcelain) was gorgeous with incredible attention to design details as well as the overall look. It was a big studio apartment (actually bigger than the flat I live in in HK!) with fantastic views over to Pudong. It was stunning at...

Imagine going to visit friends in an exciting new city. You arrive and are shown into their wonderful flat designed for the most comfortable and peaceful stay. They hand you the key and say make yourself at home. And here is a list of our favourite restaurants and jazz clubs and telephone us if you need any help. This was...

My partner and I went to Shanghai for Thanksgiving. We entered a foreign world in a country of billions, not expecting to find accommodations anything close to our apartment at Chai Living. The layout was simple and elegant. The bed, sheets, and thoughtfulness of the design far exceeded our expectations. In a city of millions, our room provided an oasis...

Just spent five nights at Chai with my husband and we absolutely loved this place!! Lee, our wonderfull host, was waiting for us downstairs when we arrived after a long flight. From the moment we arrived (at the wrong address) we were so well looked after by German. Loan of mobile was invaluable and he really did everything possible to make our stay better. Staying in Hongkou

Neighbourhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
CHAI Living is a collection of serviced residences instead of a traditional hotel, with the combination of design gallery, art gallery and events staging. Uniquely situated within an Art Deco landmark now home to many local Shanghainese, CHAI Living offers a different perspective to Shanghai and a rare window into vast-vanishing traditional ways of life. The CHAI Living Residences are all conceptually designed apartments within the Embankment Building, offering the comforts of modern life to guests with a taste for style and sophistication. As an alternative to a five-star hotel, CHAI Living strives to offer a friendly, "family-style" approach to staying in Shanghai. We provide housekeeping and concierge services, with a member of staff on site at all times to provide 24-hour assistance. ... more   less
