Stayed there for just two nights but it felt quite nice. Friendly and helpful stuff during check-in / check-out. The rooms are ok, just a bit old decoration. But they are kept clean and also bathroom was good. I had the breakfast in this hotel and the selection was great, ranging from the standard scrambled eggs, toast and so on... More

Located at a quiet spot which is probably why I didn't recognise the complaints in hotel reviews that I read upfront about girls in the lobby or in front of the hotel offering a massage. I did not see any of such thing so that's a plus. Turn just around the corner and you will find yourself in a typical... More

Despite arriving at 2.30am (from Australia) reception and baggage we ready for us. Hotel looks good outside and foyer and this continues into the bedroom suite, had everything expected of 5 Star. Pleasant change, windows open and they even have smoking floors! Also licenced convenience store across the road. A huge choice at breakfast with staff very attentive. We stayed... More

We were with Mercury Holidays on their escorted "Wonders of China" tour and found all the hotels we stayed in were of a very high standard. We spent two nights at the Ocean Hotel in Shanghai, 2 at the Tibet Hotel in Chengdu, 2 at the Titan Times Hotel in Xi-an and 4 at the Landmark Hotel in Beijing. We... More

A really lovely hotel from the entrance hall to the most stunning bed room with a lounge. We're on the 16th floor so had a superb view of all the colouful buildings especially at night. The area is rather far from the busy tourist areas. The staff speak very little English. Close to the Old Jewish area. Nice breakfast. So... More

We stayed here three nights in late September, 2016, and were very pleased. Our room, booked for us by China Focus out of San Francisco as the conclusion to a tour of Tibet, Chengdu Panda Base, Yangtze River cruise, ending in Shanghai. From reading, it appears that our room was a business king, with a revolving television, a small living... More

Have just returned from a Mercury China Discovery Tour. The hotel was very nice and the room lovely. We were there for three nights, couldn't really fault it. The bathroom was in a glass cube in the bedroom so probably not so good if you are shy with your ablutions!!

The hotel is in a residential area,so relatively quiet, about 5 minutes drive from the Bund and the nightlife of the central city. Surrounding the hotel there are no,limited western bars, restaurants or shopping facilities. Nevertheless the hotel has been recently renovated to a decent 4 star standard. It has 357 rooms. As part of a tour group we stayed in a... More

Staying in Hongkou

Neighbourhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
