I will start by saying....the Ocean Hotel is impressive in it's public spaces. Very modern and nicely decorated. The guest rooms were fine with nice bathrooms and English TV stations available. The buffet was lavish and nicely presented, however, a number of folks in our tour group became unwell shortly after our first meal in the hotel. Not saying for...

The hotel is beautifully modern on the outside, although far from any decent restaurants or sights. But the thermostat in our room didn't work. We complained repeatedly. In three days, five different people came to look at it, but none of them fixed it. Finally, someone opened a small window. (We'd have done that earlier, except they were locked.) Three...

We stayed here in October 2014 while on a tour. The room we had was fantastic. Wonderful view of the city. Close enough to the Bund for a short cab ride if you wanted to shop. Lots of eating place along the road (we don't read or speak Chinese so we didn't eat in them). There is a little market...

Where do I start !!! The hotel was actually nice but certainly not 5 star as it is rated, Terribly situated and not within walking distance of any attaractions, 15 minute walk to metro which was excellent for getting anywhere we needed to go, Beautiful pool but water was freezing and only 2 seats which had been used by other...

We stayed at the hotel for three nights and enjoyed every moment. The hotel is very modern, the room was spacious and comfortable, the bath was large and with nice cosmetics. The breakfast was fantastic, wide verity fresh fruits and vegetables ,specially made omelets and freshly baked croissant and also a Chinese breakfast which was very nice. The two cons were...

We enjoyed our stay here. It was our first Chinese hotel and the room was clean, comfortable beds and a good sized bathroom with plenty of hot water. Towels were changed daily even though not requested which was a nice touch. Breakfast was good, hot and plenty to choose from.

On first impressions this hotel looks the part. It has just been refurbished and looks very classy. However the attitude of the staff from the managers down was terrible. We found them unhelpful, rude and unfriendly. The language barrier cannot be blamed for this as most spoke English and its easy to smile and be happy in any culture. The...

The rooms are spacious and clean. Our room was on a higher floor. The bathroom was huge with a separate tub and shower. The buffet breakfast had a vast array of choices with everything being delicious. The Chinese Restaurant on the second floor was also very good. It is very close to a neighbourhood park and The Jewish Museum.

As with all our hotel stays during our China Tour, the Ocean Hotel was clean and comfortable. The staff members were all very polite and helpful regardless of any language problems. Breakfast buffet was delicious catering for all tastes. We were able to access free wifi in foyer and lounge areas. This was a very busy hotel, but we were...

Staying in Hongkou

Neighbourhood Profile
Hongkou
History oozes out of every fiber of the city, but Hongkou is a particularly notable neighborhood. Shanghai was a safe haven for about 20,000 Jews during the Second World War, and traces of this heritage can still be found in buildings and park monuments. Historic foreign relations aside, this neighborhood throws you into traditional Shanghainese life without taking you too far away from the city center. Some of the city’s best-preserved, ancient longtangs (laneway communities) and shikumen (Shanghainese lanehouses) are still in use as actual residences here. If you like to be surrounded by local faces, Hongkou is a great area to spend your time in. The football stadium, Duolun Lu and the North Bund area await should you need some entertainment.
