We travelled Beijing, Xian, Chengdu, Guilin, Yangsuo and Shanghai and had good hotels up until the Merry Hotel in Shanghai. Our guide warned us on the way from the airport that he had received numerous complaints from people about the hotel. In our 1st room (before we requested to be moved), the shower didn’t work (drip-like water pressure) and the...

The Hotel is in a very good location to move around to other areas in Shanghai. Also to go to Pudong Trade Exhibition area by subway. It´s a good hotel for Chinese customers, but foreigners will always find something they do not like. The (Western) breakfast options are poor in quality and terrible in taste. Eat Chinese food. The gym...

This is my second visit to this lovely hotel. My previous experience was that I had some 90 staff and students from South Australia to visit Shanghai. The hotel has been refurbished and the rooms are really comfortable with city view. I had amazing breakfast and there is plenty to enjoy the Chinese style noodles. Perhaps one day I would...

The reception is large and stark. The rooms are better than you expect after seeing the reception, but are quite dated and the bathroom is far too dark. The a/c didn't really work, and just spat dust out. If you go in a group for a meal, don't make the mistake of ordering together! There was a drama when we...

I probably would have given this hotel 2 stars but the location is in a great neighborhood for exploring. With several restaurants, coffee shops and small stores to buy souvenirs it's a great location. The hotel breakfast was pretty good with a fair variety of but Asian and Western dishes to choose from. The hotel itself is run down and...

Rooms were old, furniture and bed were out-dated and not comfortable. Front desk staff were the least helpful of any hotel I stayed in in China. Buffet breakfast was atrocious. The were slices of American cheese in their wrappers, subpar pastries, cold eggs. Could barely eat any of it. I wouldn't stay here. Location not central and hotel unpleasant. Many...

The Merry offers the services, amenities and efficiency that business people want to receive upon checking-in a Hotel. The room (2012, between April11 and 15, 2016) came with all the necessary equipment - iron, iron board, fridge, slippers and bathrobe, wooden hangers, safe for passport and confidential documents. The room was spacious enough, had sufficient storage space and was properly...

This hotel seems popular fro group tours; understandably because it is not too pricey for its location. It is a brisk 15 minutes’ walk from Jian-an Temple Station ( Line 2). There is a bus stop right in front of the hotel which takes you to Nanjing Street (High Street in Shanghai), people's Square etc if you are brave enough...

Stayed here as part of a Gate 1 tour in China. Hotel is rated four stars but certainly didn't seem like a four star property. The first impression is not good as the hotel entrance is next door to an old shabby apartment building. The lobby is rather plain. The hallways and rooms are a little dark - better lighting...

This was the last hotel we stayed in while visiting China and it was probably our least favorite. The rooms were dated and the lobby was dated and dark as well. The rooms were nice and clean and the staff was friendly as well. We had just stayed a nicer hotel prior so this one just didn't quite measure up....

Staying in Jing'an

Neighbourhood Profile
The heart of this neighborhood is the Jing'an Temple, while the main artery of excitement and entertainment is West Nanjing Road. Close to the Former French Concession, the area has a similar draw for foreign residents but displays a more commercial character. Large, flashy malls, luxe residential high-rises and trendy nightlife areas can be found along West Nanjing Road, but areas off the busy street have the same quiet cafes and independent boutiques that many people think of as distinctive of the Former French Concession. Jing'an is less encased in amber, though, and it's possible to immerse yourself more fully in the energy of China's most bustling metropolis here.
