This was not a pleasant stay. Although they changed my bedsheets everyday they were still covered in dark black hairs and all over the towels (I am blonde so not mine). They kept running out of hot water. The electrics in my room kept tripping and I was told only to plug my phone charger in and I couldn't use...

The hotel upgraded us for free to a larger room. The bed was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious and modern, and everything was very clean. Our bag was quickly delivered to our room and the staff were not looking for a tip. On arrival we were given a fruit platter and green tea. There was a nice sitting...

The Shanghai Donghu Hotel should not be confused with the Donghu Hotel in the same street. It is a 5 star hotel in a garden setting in a fabulous location in the former French Concession area. I stayed here several years ago and it was pleasantly shabby-chic, quasi French provincial. Since then it's had an uber makeover so that it...

The location of this hotel is fantastic. The area is so beautiful and interesting with many restaurants and quaint streets. The room was a pleasant surprise. We were very excited as we were attending a conference in Shanghai and decided to stay here for the area. The room was lovely with so many welcoming details. Who wouldn't be excited by...

The location of this hotel is unbelievable good in Shanghai while the service level doesn't match at all. Definitely the employee there is not well trained, the food is so so, no room service, lobby bar is definitely a waste, only one treadmill in GYM. Strong suggest not stay.

There are restaurants and bars near the hotel some are across the street. The place in clean. the hotel is two and a half blocks from the subway. I arrived at night and went the wrong way so make sure when you leave exit two from the subway that the enclosed police van is to your back as you walk...

We spent 5 nights here and loved the calm, beautiful hotel. Our room, and bed were large and very comfortable. Spacious bathroom. Great location, close to transport and in an area with great restaurants and bars.

I've stayed in Donghu Hotel probably 30 plus times and I'm sick of the front desk service attitude. I used to stay in the gorgeous old mansion, and for the two or so years they spent renovating it, I stayed in their 2-star rooms in a separate building out of loyalty and familiarity with and love for the area. I'm...

I stayed here in 2009 and this time it is a huge upgrade to a higher class hotel. They claimed it was a 20 million dollar renovation - and it shows: from the polished marble floor in the lobby, to the Persian rug on every floor, to the classic Art Deco style of 1930's - detailed in every way. The...

Staying in Former French Concession

Neighbourhood Profile
Former French Concession
While there are technical borders to the area formerly governed by the French in Shanghai, the "French Concession" of today is an amorphous neighborhood that is a favorite of the city's foreign residents. While it is mostly within the Xuhui district, residents will sometimes include parts of Jing'an and Luwan in their mental maps of the Former French Concession. The area seems frozen in time, characterized by quiet, tree-lined avenues, French-style villas, interesting boutiques, lively bars and quaint cafes that are not typical of China. All of these mix and mingle with local life as Chinese markets and lanehouse communities are peppered throughout. Denizens of the Former French Concession can spectate a mahjong game on the street or get their bike checked at a tiny bike repair store on the way to their refurbished apartment tucked away among Chinese family homes.
