Located in a quiet part of Jingan, Shantgtex (formerly Hufang) is a bargain with its rate. For business travel, it's adequate. For leisure, the hotel is minutes walk from trendy cafes and restaurants, with streets lined with large trees and historical buildings that are begging for their stories to be told. Though dated, the rooms are unexpectedly large. Mine is...

This hotel is a standard Chinese hotel, so be prepared to get what you paid for. The Shangtex (as it is now known), is about 10-15 minutes away from Henglong Shopping Centre and the Kerry Centre. The hotel staff do not speak English, so either come-prepared to gesture a lot, or, brush up on your mandarin skills. The hotel is...

We were surprised to get a room in a building next to the hotel, rather than in the main hotel building. The room itself was OK, but the entrance, corridors etc were really not nice and the building is of a much lower standard than the main building. There was no mention of this when we booked the room so...

Rooms were fairly clean, beds were pretty hard (usual in China) but tolerable. Noisy, but that's just normal for Shanghai unless you're on a very high floor. There's a slightly odd bathroom arrangement with a window directly into the shower right next to the bed (we had a twin room) - make sure to draw the blind before stepping in!...

Be prepared to gesture your way if you cannot speak Mandarin. Staff speak a little English and you need to double reconfirm what ever they say. I was on a long business trip on my dime and the hotel suited me well. Rooms were clean and the washroom was clean and modern. Bring along your own soap and shampoo though....

Arrived at the hotel to find noone spoke English and they demanded up front payment (I saw a Chinese man check out when I did and they asked for payment from him then). The staff refused to return my change until I checked out. The room was dirty - stained carpets and wallpaper peeling - I was only in Shanghai...

Staying in Jing'an

Neighbourhood Profile
The heart of this neighborhood is the Jing'an Temple, while the main artery of excitement and entertainment is West Nanjing Road. Close to the Former French Concession, the area has a similar draw for foreign residents but displays a more commercial character. Large, flashy malls, luxe residential high-rises and trendy nightlife areas can be found along West Nanjing Road, but areas off the busy street have the same quiet cafes and independent boutiques that many people think of as distinctive of the Former French Concession. Jing'an is less encased in amber, though, and it's possible to immerse yourself more fully in the energy of China's most bustling metropolis here.
