Rooms arranged in blocks of eight - four rooms up and four down . Upper rooms, accessed by upper sidewalk have balconies, while lower rooms have decks. Balconies and decks face an expanse of grass and the river. The block closest to the restaurant have room numbers in the 600 series. Blocks continue along the walks to rooms in the 100 series. Rooms are basic but clean. AC is a bit hard to adjust, nice toiletries including moisturizing lotion, hand soap and three wall mounted products in the shower. WiFi is fairly reliable. There is a safe in the room however there is a charge of $3 per day to obtain the safe key from reception. Buffet breakfast all served by staff.
Nice size pool with loungers, a short walkway near the pool leads to a viewing platform (lots of iguanas below near the river) and a jacuzzi. Throughout the morning, staff puts bananas in the trees at the back of the restaurant which attracts many birds.

Hotels in La Fortuna can be expensive during high season. The Tilajari Hotel Resort offers good value at a reasonable price. We stayed twice during January of 2020 and recommend the property highly.

The property is about 20 to 25 minutes from La Fortuna and is on the Rio Peñas Blancas. It has tennis courts, a spa, pools, a large hot tub and a full size soccer field for the athletically inclined. The rooms are in small blocks and are spread along the river. The rooms are spacious, some have king size beds. There is air conditioning, nice bathrooms, porches and WiFi.

The hotel staff is helpful and attentive. The restaurant is roofed but open along the sides. The food is tasty and well presented. In the morning, they put fruit on the bushes along the sides of the restaurant and you can see dozens of species of birds. We saw blue-gray tanagers, red legged honey creepers, passerini's tanagers, orange-chinned parakeets, clay colored thrushes and many others. Most of those eating breakfast had cameras out throughout the meal.

If you are looking for reasonable accommodations during the high season in La Fortuna, I can unequivocally recommend the Tilajari Hotel Resort.

This was a great place to stay. Airy rooms, comfortable beds, a/c and a clean bathroom. I see some reviews moaning about the room decor but it's supposed to be natural. The grounds are beautiful with a river towards the rear. The river is full of crocodiles and there are many iguanas around the garden, they are harmless! The sounds of crocs can be heard in the rooms. The bird feeding at breakfast is a great touch and food is good enough. For the price, location and the facilities on offer its hard to beat around the area!

We stayed at the Tilajari Hotel Resort and Conference Center for five nights during our group tour of Costa Rica. It is set amongst very extensive private grounds on the Rio San Carlos which is great for spotting bird and wildlife. It is also sited at a good location for travelling to other wildlife locations in the area.
Our hotel room was a second floor appartment that was spacious and had two large beds which was kept clean on a daily basis. The staff at the hotel were very professional and polite and all spoke English very well. Obviously a policy at the hotel. There is a selection of sports facilities if that's your thing, swimming, tennis, football, horse riding etc.
The restaurant serves buffet and a la carte menus with a well stocked bar. Food was of a good quality with good service from staff.
We enjoyed our stay and visited Arenal and Cano Negro which are within a reasonable travelling distance.
As a hotel that is doing well on an environmental basis, it was a shame that plastic disposable drinking straws were still being used. Perhaps an option of providing a bamboo straw to each customer (with the hotel name printed on) would be cheaper, more environmentally friendly and a nice momento to take home!
Overall, I would recommend this hotel as a great place to stay.

UNDERRATED! Only a 15-20 minute drive from the volcano/ excursions. The rooms are brand new and sparkling clean(see pics). Room smells like an Aveda spa. Front desk staff is amazing. WiFi is free at any point in the resort and breakfast was included. Dining is amazing. The resort also has butterfly gardens and horses. Breakfast was included and spectacular.. each day at breakfast we would be within feet of iguanas and sloths. Originally booked at Tabacon, but fleed here when the staff RELUCTANTLY admitted the first coronavirus patient had been there the day before and the resort was never closed down(see review on tabacon page). Staff here at Tilajari was transparent and amazing. Will book here each and every time for sure! ABSOLUTELY loved it.

Accommodation is in rooms all looking onto the wide river, Large terraces allow comfortable views of wildlife and countryside. The rooms are spacious, clean and comfortable. Staff are friendly and appear really proud of this eco hotel. The owner was keen to speak to guests. Lots of room to walk and sit in the grounds. The butterfly house needs a bit of attention. Birds are attracted to the restaurant area with fruit. Very nice pool area and jacuzzi.

Stayed here 3 nights as part of a tour. Some rooms had balconies (entry door facing away from the river) others not. I was in 504 with entry facing the river and no balcony. Room had 2 queen beds, air conditioning, and a nice bathroom. Restaurant breakfast and dinner were buffet (they dish out the food). Food service was slow (1 person doing all the dishing), but food was tasty. This hotel had the best bar selection of all of my hotels in CR. The restaurant and bar are covered, open air. One night there was live music in the bar/restaurant. Great bird watching as the staff put out fruit in the morning. Wifi was good, but not fast. Hotel staff working in the restaurant diligently wore masks, but not so on the grounds. We got a great view of Arenal Volcano from the hotel property. Staff at the front desk were spotty with masks. Gift shop is on site, but selection is limited. Given many tourists are avoiding city shopping, this was a missed opportunity for the hotel to upsell.

The location of the Tilajari is just outside La Fortuna so away from the hustle and bustle of the tourist area, when you arrive it feels like a sanctuary of quiet amidst nature.

The hotel is large and spans a large area along a river setting and our room was located in block 2, which was one of the furthest away from the central hotel areas of the pool, bar/restaurant. It was a nice scenic walk through the gardens to go back and forth.

The hotel has lots to do, tennis courts, basketball, conferencing (although we didn’t see it) and a lovely pool area. The children were amazed at the wildlife especially the large Iguanas that roamed around the grounds, it was fun to watch them scaling the trees in the morning to fresh fruit left out out by the chefs.

I believe some renovations are taking place, the room we had was a little tired and is probably due a refit as is the rest of the main areas. The pool was beautiful and we spent a lot of time here however many tiles were missing, some of the base of the pool at come away but it didn’t spoil our enjoyment.

The hotel accommodates tour operators and at breakfast prior to tours departing it can be a little crazy, so we just waited until after 0830 when it was calm again. The evening food was delicious and we enjoyed a sharing board and cocktails.

At checkin we had a problem as I had made two back to back reservations and messaged ahead to ensure we didn’t have to change rooms. Sadly despite them responding that this wouldn’t be a problem, on arrival they did instruct us to move rooms due to the bookings having varying room standards which was completely my fault. This was the main issue for our booking, not so much in the need to change rooms, but it in the way it was conveyed to us. It took a great deal of time to come to an agreement on the best way forward which was to downgrade one of the reservations in order to not move mid stay. I believe this could have been dealt with better by the receptionist in question who I felt was very condescending and lacked the skills to understand my point of ‘informing us in advance’ if this was to be an issue.

Arriving at a hotel looking to settle in quickly and relax was all we hoped for after two weeks travelling through the country and we had a stalemate situation until Carolina the manager came to assist. This is such a shame and really is the main reason this review doesn’t score more highly.

Despite this, every single member of staff from this point on was utterly delightful but I must give a special mention to José Miguel who was keen to make our stay enjoyable and wanted to chat with us in English to help him improve his language skills. Not only was he polite, courteous and remembered ours and the children’s names, he went above and beyond to make us feel welcome, he redeemed our initial arrival issues alone and thus the reason for the review.

Thank you José and the Tilajari!

We took a $459 package deal through Gate1 that included this resort and were very pleasantly surprised. Service was great room comfortable and breakfast awesome.

We took all of our meals and sightseeing just outside the compound although there were plenty of great encounters on the property.

Matiz Cafe about 1/2 mile outside the gate had awesome food at 1/3 the price and the town of Muele San Carlos great to explore.

Enjoy the scenery at dusk. We drove up to Arenal Volcano just as the sun was setting for incredible pictures and spared ourselves the $80 tram fee.

Careful of the damaged bridge about 5 km north, hole in bridge, instead of fixing it the put 2 huge speed bumps

Overall great and super cheap stay

Having checked into the tilajari resort on the 4th day of our Costa Rican journey - we have been severely disappointed.

The rating of the hotel is 4 star, we have come as tourists from the U.K and have been treated poorly with zero hospitality from the check in point.

We have been checked into an outdated room with damp rising up the walls, dirty bedsheets and old rusted cupboards, I am not sure how this makes it a 4 star resort. Pictures available.

When asking for simple things like towels or basic provisions, the hotel haven’t been able to help us. We asked for a map of the local area and their reply was “we do not have one” when pushed for even local map, again we were met with “no we have no maps of the area”. What 4 star resort in a tourist hub have no maps? Surely this is not the standard for a 4 star resort?

We were informed at the check in to ask for the sauna to be switched on at least 20 minutes before use, which we proceeded to do. On arriving to the sauna, it was cold, not switched on and the door left open. We complained once again to the front desk - where Robert the attendant to check us in, just said “ I don’t know”.

We informed Robert we are vegetarian in diet, could he ensure the breakfast are informed of this. His reply “you have to tell the restaurant yourself”.

What a poor service for the San Carlos and la fortuna area. We would not return here or recommend any international travellers to come through to this hotel.

So far we appalled with the service, made to feel uncomfortable as if we are in the way of there extremely non busy season. It has left what was such a great start with a horrid taste of poor hospitality and discomfort to our trip. Perhaps as we are foreign we have been treated differently.

Dear Punn Family: First to of all we want to thank you very much for meeting us at the Front Desk during your visit and giving us personally your feedback. It is much better when we have that type of closeness with our customers and receive all their impressions about what we need to improve to give a better service. During our personal conversation we explained you the different room types we have; Standard, Jr. Suite, Superiors and Classics. You booked the Classic one category and even these are well maintained rooms and considering they are on the most requested issue which is ¨River View ¨ we can understand sometimes it could look dark and humid as we are in the middle of the rainforest and humidity is a characteristic of this kind of forest- However we are going to work with your suggestion about open windows to make them fresher and ventilated. We hope you have enjoyed our Superior rooms for the last two nights that we offered as a free upgrade during your staying. We are happy we could change your mind about those comments. Even we have been opened for 35 years in hospitality industry we have settled our daily goal to fulfill customer needs. We work under that direction every day. We enjoy visits of clients from every part of the world and our values are based on respect. Once, again thank you very for stopping back with us and giving us your feedback. We are working on those issues we agreed in our conversation. They are solved now. Thank you!

Hi, we didn’t have items of clothes laundered there. There was an item list which is available in the wardrobes with laundry bags to complete and handover to the maid service. We tried hand washing small garments, but drying is slightly tedious with the level of humidity. Sorry I couldn’t answer your question directly.
