Xandari Resort & Spa offers the quintessential Costa Rica experience. The property’s forest reserve, with five waterfalls and miles of trails for bird-watching, provides the nature guests expect from a visit to Costa Rica. The landscaped gardens, the orchid house, and the farm all provide an additional abundance of tropical goodness. The Spa provides ample opportunity to unwind, to relax, to absorb the surrounding nature. All 24 villas, each uniquely designed and set within lush foliage, have spectacular views. And three times a day, our restaurant demonstrates the role of local cuisine in giving visitors an authentic sense of place.

Xandari Resort & Spa has earned high marks for its impeccable cleanliness, with guests frequently applauding the pristine pools and well-kept rooms. The resort's vibrant atmosphere and spacious layout provide a tranquil setting, despite some areas needing a refresh. Its standout amenities, including the variety of pools, scenic trails, and an acclaimed spa, are popular among guests, although a lack of air conditioning has been noted. Visitors are charmed by the ample rooms and spectacular views, but some suggest a bit of updating is in order. The staff at Xandari is consistently celebrated for their outstanding service, making guests feel exceptionally welcome. While the on-site restaurant may be on the pricier side, many travelers see the resort as a great value, with some even extending their stays to fully enjoy the natural attractions.

We stayed here our last night for our honeymoon to relax and splurged before we flew back to the US. They were so accommodating with letting us eat with the times between lunch and dinner when we arrived because we were starving and tired from driving 5 hours. The restaurant view was amazing. I couldn’t get over it and the food was pretty good from what we had for linner and breakfast. We also did their spa services for a couple’s massage and they were able to make it work with fitting us in last minute. The room we got was amazing and they even made us a special little board Written “Happy Honeymoon” with a little bit of fruit and some chocolate covered strawberries. They have 3 pools and one is apparently amazing at Sunset around 5:45ish and it’s called “the sunset pool.” They have all these hiking trails to explore and offer a lot of tours to different areas of the country to arrange through them with decent pricing. We will DEFINITELY be staying here next time we are in CR but for at least 2 nights. The only thing I would say is slightly challenging is they aren’t super close to anything in the city (which is partly why we chose this) and the roads near the resort have A LOT of traffic in rush hour, so it took forever to get there when we only had 15km left from a 5 hour drive.

This was our first visit to Xandari for our one year anniversary. We randomy chose the resort and once we arrived we were met with nothing but amazement.

The grounds were amazingly kept with an incredible array of foliage that was simply astonishing.

The staff was a step above in all positions.

Prior to our arrival Lucy helped us with a multitude of questions and continued to help us with ground transportion and other questions that we had.

Alex and Oscar in the restaurant gave consistent and amazing service each and every time. If we didn't join them in the restaurant for a meal then they called our room to ask if they could bring us anything before the kitchen closed. We wondered when they slept as they seemed to work tirelessly each day. We enjoyed countless conversations with them about life, family and the resort and it's history.

The chef (which we did not have the opportunity to meet) prepared amazing meals that were fairly priced. The Ceviche amongst other plates were simply incredible and well balanced.

In the Spa Marisol and Irene offered top notch spa treatments in their private cabanas. The private jacuzzi option was incredible as we gazed over untouched terrain as fog rested within the forest.

A beautiful place surrounded by wonderful people that made our trip feel like a second (and more pampered) home away from home.

We WILL be back!

We stayed for one day and two nights for a short break after the flight from the UK and before we set off for the rest of our holiday. Only 30 minutes from the airport but it felt like a world away. Idyllic setting on a beautiful plantation with trails within the grounds which lead to several waterfalls. We particularly loved the bamboo forest the largest we've ever seen. The trails are steep but we enjoyed the exercise particularly because the food is so good! The room was decorated in bright colours and traditional arts and crafts, the bed was comfortable and the standard of cleanliness was high. The views from our room and the dining room were fabulous. Staff, warm, friendly and genuine.
Planes do fly over quite late in the evening and earlier in the evening than British people would be used to but despite that don't miss this place. Excellent!

At the end our lives, we think back on the people we loved and our experiences in life. When we have magnificent experiences with those we love, them all the better. We had such an experience at Xandari. We came to Xandari at the end of a two week vacation in Costa Rica, spending only two nights here before our flight home. What a great decision!

Xandari is a magical place, with friendly staff members, excellent menu choices, and incredible artistic design throughout the property. The three pools accommodated those who wanted to swim laps and enjoy the hot tub, and one infinity pool we enjoyed at sunset.

The spa, ( which we visited but had no time to enjoy), was all by itself in a jungle setting with private rooms for various therapies. The prices were typical spa prices and while the spa was most appealing, we spent our time visiting the outdoor beauty of Xandari.

And what incredible beauty! Five natural water falls along a well groomed trail through the jungle. Falls number 4 was at least 120 meters high, with a perfect pool to rest your feet. The trail took us instantly into the beauty of Costa Rica, with only the noise of the water and the sounds of the birds.

And of course, our room! Our room was filled with the art of the founder’s wife. Our secluded patio looked out over a beautiful urban valley bordered by mountains. The water pressure was fine and the heat came on instantly. We were there during the CR winter, so the absence of air conditioners made no difference at all.

What a gem of a retreat! What a perfect way to end our reunion with our three sons and their families.

Thank you very much for the time dedicated to this beautiful comment. We are very happy to know that we achieved our goal in your stay at Xandari. Part of the xandari culture is to maintain direct contact with nature in all the spaces where you walk. We hope to see you soon and that way you can enjoy the services of the spa with the herbal Jacuzzis, herbs that we acquire from our botanical gardens. Pura Vida!

We had another wonderful stay at Xandari, it really is a true gem! We had concerns due to Covid, but decided at the last minute to travel, so glad we did! Entering Costa Rica was a breeze with the required insurance, less than $100 for both of us. Staff in masks always and making sure you’re taken good care of. It was so good seeing Lucy again, she is so helpful! As always, she answers my many questions before we arrive. Last trip we left a charger, we told Lucy to keep it or give it to someone who might need one. She sent it to us anyway! What can I say? They take care of their guests! CR does it right, portable sinks everywhere, in front of grocery stores, banks, shops etc. Disinfectant mat to step on before entering Xandari and masks, hand sanitizer. Xandari was as beautiful and lush as always, we had two different villas, each spotless with great beds and those amazing views!! Trails are well kept and we basically had the three pools to ourselves. Xandari arranged our pickup to and from SJO, we had a delightful driver, Hayro Hernandez, so knowledgeable and always on time. The food here is plentiful and delicious. We got our PCR test while traveling, we printed our negative results when back at Xandari. Our check in at the airport was seamless having our results printed. We hope to be back sooner than later! Thanks Xandari for another great time.

Xandari is really fabulous, set in a beautiful location on the foothills of Poas within about 20 minutes of San Jose Airport & a world away in terms of environment. 5 Stars in every respect & a real joy, gorgeous jungle location, excellent rooms & facilities including 3 pools, chilled, cool & relaxed, fantastic panoramic views from the restaurant & rooms, super friendly, welcoming, efficient & professional staff, even the Gardener's & non customer facing staff are all very nice. Lucy & Brenda on Front Desk super professional & helpful in every respect. Delicious food & great pricing. Alex the Chef unexpectedly created a birthday treat of chocolate covered strawberries for my wife's birthday thanks to the excellent customer service by the front desk. Really love the hotel, the staff & the environment & recommend it 100% to any discerning traveller, you'll want to come back time & time again & btw I am just a regular guest & feel privileged to enjoy being here & give credit where it's deserved.

First off, let me preface this review with the fact that we stayed at Xandari after our stays on Osa Peninsula and before we flew back home (had to take a COVID test in San Jose a day before flying back to the USA). We thought this hotel was pretty solid for a 1 night stay. The room was clean and was very spacious and had a great view of the city and mountains from the room and restaurant. The food was very good as well and the staff was very pleasant and accommodating.

We did have a couple complaints about Xandari, with that being said. The hotel advertised that there was wifi in the room but we did not have any signal in the room and the wifi was very shoddy in the lobby/restaurant. Normally this wouldn't be a big deal being on vacation, however it was pretty important as we were trying to check on our COVID test appointments/results, checking in for our flight and staying updated on flight times. Our other complaint was that the waitstaff at dinner wasn't very attentive. We felt like we were being ignored and had to wave over the waiter to order more wine, meanwhile they spent all there time waiting on one other party that was there. We're sure this wasn't an intentional snub, but it did feel like were were a lesser priority. They had also advertised that the restaurant to be a place to sit and drink/socialize, however we had a similar experience trying to track down a waitstaff to check in to see if we needed anything.

To end the review on a positive note, the concierge was helpful in arranging taxis for us to the airport and the grounds were very pretty was great views of San Jose.

Xandari is near to the airport so was a great place to start our holiday in CR. We liked the genuine conservation history of the property which continues today. The food was very good and completely locally sourced. Breakfast especially good. This is a small property but has no less than 3 pools 2 of which are 25m exercise pools so great for swimmers. You will be unlucky to find anyone else using your pool. Rooms aren’t luxury but are very comfortable with private balconies. There is a fairly long and steep trail which we enjoyed and gave us a bit of a work out before breakfast. As usual plenty of bird life to spot. We were glad we stayed 2 nights rather than 1 as most people seemed to. Our only criticism is that reception quoted us $55 for a return taxi to Doka coffee plantation whereas UBER got us there for less than $5 each way ! One star deducted for that. The Doka tour is well worth it and you are back in 2 hours so easy to fit in. $22 entrance per adult at Doka. Good tour.

Beautifully located in the mountains not far from San José airport, the hotel offers excellent views over the valley. We stayed in one of the villas, which was private, very clean and had super comfortable beds, The airport is not very far and the occassional airplane can be heard if they approach or land from the same direction as the location of the hotel. On the very large premises there is the opprtunity to walk to 5 astonishing waterfalls.

During a short two night stay, I experienced their restaurant for breakfast, lunch, and dinnee, offering excellent and nicely presented dishes with very friendly and professional service.

Our villa was very spacious, very clean, well maintained , offering a large terrace with plenty of furniture to enjoy the magnificent view of surrounding hills.

The massage and jacuzzi package offered at their Spa was excellent and very peaceful as the service was provided in a private open air space overlooking the hills.

The best was their network of trails that are extremely well maintained, taking one along the river with five waterfalls and access to the local flora and fauna.

I will definitely be back!

Is it possible to swim in any of the waterfall pools?
Answer from Stingray
41 contributions9 helpful votes
The waterfall pools on the nature trail close to Xandari Resoort were not very wide and the water was coming over rather fast. It is probably physically possible to swim there, though I am a strong, confident swimmer and chose not to. Luckily there are several great swimming pools with great views at the resort itself. Also, elsewhere in Costa Rica, we did find bigger pools that would be better for swimming in.
