My husband and I stayed here for 1 night after a late flight into SJO and before starting our adventure in CR. We had a great experience. Our flight was delayed, but the desk was ready for us when we finally showed up at 11pm. It wsa a quick 10 min ride from the airport, about $10 USD by taxi. We had the superior room which was perfect for a couple - comfy king bed, AC, private bath with good hot shower and great water pressure. We didn't have a ton of time to explore as we got our rental car first thing the next morning, but the courtyard was adorable with local plants and breakfast was the perfect intro to our visit - gorgeous courtyard, fresh fruit, eggs, coffee, what more can you ask for?

I think the best feature of the hotel is the service. A few days after booking I got an email explaining offered amenities, services etc. I sent a long list of questions about our trip, and the owner Heather actually emailed me back and offered to talk by phone as it would be easier. She answered all my questions, provided info about the process of immigration and getting a taxi, when to leave in the morning, which route to take, etc that was truly above and beyond.

Would stay again for the night before/after our flight on our next trip and would recommend if you need a spot near the airport or plan to explore the area

This is a perfect place to stay for your first night and last night if you arrive through SJO. It's a very short taxi ride after a long trip. They communicate with you by email during the planning and booking process. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. They were also able to help us get a rental car delivered directly to the hotel! Great coffee and breakfast is included to start your day. The rooms are comfortable and a great value for the price. The location is good too, and there are lots of different places to eat, depending on the type of experience you are looking for. If you call, you may speak to Mauricio, who is a very kind and helpful person. We also met the owner, Charles, who was very helpful to us on our first night when we arrived, and walked us to one of the only open locations to get a snack at that time of the evening.

My boyfriend and I landed around 1 am in Costa Rica from U.S. We last minute found this hotel to be the cheapest and safest and only 10 minutes from San Jose Airport. When we arrived late at night the man at the front desk was unbelievably kind and even took the time to teach us how to convert U.S dollars to Costa Rican. Mind you, it was around 2 am at this point. We felt safe and comfortable and woke up to free breakfast made my a kind woman and her cute little puppy. We sat outside and enjoyed eggs, coffee, and fruit. It was an even more beautiful hotel to see in the morning with the sun. The woman continued to teach us how to use the Costa Rican money and even told us where to get the cheapest phone plans and car rentals. I didn’t want to leave! Thank you guys so much for a great first night.

We booked one night here to be close to SJO for an early flight. This review is strictly to contend that it’s not a 3 star “boutique hotel”. The owner is very welcoming and helpful. The property is clean. It’s in a good location, close to the airport with decent restaurants. The night staff Luis is also friendly and helpful, and sent us off with coffee-to-go and muffins.
However based on reviews and a post on Two Weeks In Costa Rica blog we expected a 3 star “boutique” hotel albeit small. We were very disappointed; the property is closer to a quaint HOSTEL or a 1 star hotel. Our Superior Room had no safe. The lock on the door is a simple key lock similar to a cabinet lock. Our air conditioning did not work. There is no telephone in the room. You can’t flush the toilet paper; there is a sign in bathroom asking you to put it in wastebasket. Our mattress was uncomfortable and similar to a dorm mattress; in fact the room is dorm like. And despite it being a Superior Room, we had a lot of street noise that kept us awake.
As far as the bathroom, there is a large area with water damage by shower (photo added) and I would be concerned with mold. Also the sink drain kept closing when you turned on the faucet and sink would fill up with water.
We had to haul heavy luggage up the entrance stairs; typically a hotel has someone to meet you at the entrance and help. This could be a problem if you have mobility issues. We had to buzz at the door to be let in after bringing the suitcases up ourselves.

The property would be suitable if you’re seeking basic, no frills accommodations but if you’re expecting a 3 star “boutique” hotel I’d reconsider.

We are far from basic. We have a beautiful historic property, a sanctuary in the middle of a busy city... and a tremendous heart for serving and loving our guests. I am grateful you found us welcoming and helpful. Luis is AMAZING. Thank you for mentioning him. We want our responses to your issues to be a way of clarification to future guests. We hope it does not come across as being defensive, as it is certainly not meant to be. Since we are in the middle of the city center it is difficult to control the city noise. We do have sound machines available to guests to help mitigate the issue. Your right... we are not good for people with mobility issues. The historic home is quirky and has up and downstairs to get to different parts of the hotel. My apologies that I did not offer to bring your bags up. As I recall you were already coming up the stairs when I came outside to welcome you. Because we are in the middle of the city, we buzz our guests in and out for the safety of all. My apologies that you found this an issue. All over Costa Rica you cannot put the toilet paper in the toilet. It has to do with the plumbing in the country not the plumbing in our hotel. In so far as the room itself... We often get compliments on how comfortable our beds are. In the Superior Rooms specifically, we have upgraded the cover with a down and poly-filled one for added comfort. I am sorry you did not find the mattress as such. The rooms are well decorated and coordinated with all other rooms and the main space, not dorm-like at all. Our AC works in every Superior Room. In fact, we had just had them serviced the week before. We would have been available to show you how to operate it, had you asked. The lock on the door is a functional lock nowhere near one you would put on a cabinet to keep a child out. The sink drain is a function of the design of the sink. It isn't like our American sinks that have a lever to open and close the drain. With this particular sink unit, you have to open and close it manually. The water damage is something we have been trying to fix for months. We get a tradesperson to say they are coming and never show up. Just one of the joys of Costa Rica. We do have a reliable person coming on this Thursday... we will have it fixed then. We hope our response helps to clear the concerns of our future guests. You won't find another small local hotel that will serve and love you like us. We look forward to the opportunity to serve you!

I had previously stayed at the Alajuela Hotel and Guest House almost 3 years ago . Then I was pleasantly surprised with the great location , comfort , and friendly atmosphere . This year we are being joined by two other couple for a stay the night we arrive as well as the night that we depart . Charles , the owner along with his wife Heather , have bent over backwards to ensure that our room and car rental went as smooth as possible . I can not possibly say enough positive things about these folks , and most importantly I suspect that our situation was not the exception , but rather the norm .

We loved it! Just a short distance from the airport and a short walk to many shops and restaurants. We ate at Elicia and enjoyed typical Costa Rican lunch and dinner. Nearby are several grocery stores where we bought coffee at great prices, to take home to friends. The breakfast served at the hotel is in a charming courtyard with birds and flowers and good coffee....and food. A good location to enjoy the nearby city and museum with easy directions from the owner, along with a map. Truly an oasis and a BARGAIN, and we had AC in our room.

This is a super cute spot that makes the city disappear. The breakfast and desk staff are super helpful and fun. I loved having coffee in the gorgeous garden with informational placards on most flora species present. The rooms were cute, with good wifi access, and clean. As a bonus for vegan travelers, El Chante Vegano restaurant is a short walk away for lunch and (early) dinner.

I highly recommend Los Volcanes. It's a short taxi ride from the airport (and offers complimentary shuttle to airport), and provides a safe relaxing paradise in the city.

A lovely, comfortable, and affordable option for our last night in San Jose before catching our flight home. Heather, the owner, was incredibly friendly, hospitable, and we loved her dog, Journey. Heather even made us take away breakfasts as our flight was very early. The back area is so cute and you can tell that Heather put a lot of thought into making this hotel a comfortable haven in a busy city. Premises also felt very clean and safe for COVID. My only minor complaint (that isn’t Heather’s fault) is that we had a room facing the street and it was fairly noisy at times, also I kept smelling food from a restaurant nearby. Again, nothing at all on Heather but something to know if you’re staying here. Thank you Heather!!!!

Jessica... thank you for the lovely review. It was a pleasure to serve you. Being in the city center has its advantages and disadvantages. Our more quite rooms are the Deluxe and Superior that are in the back of the hotel off the courtyatd and private back hall. Those might be a better option for you next time. In addition, we do have sound machines for use in all the .ain house rooms.

This hotel/ guest house was a very nice place in a central location near everything in Alajuela. There is a park and market very close and plenty of great restaurants near by. The ownership (Heather) and her staff were very accommodating and helped out in any way they could. The place is a beautiful place and very cozy as well. The security measures they take here are very comforting, but also the area felt much safer in general than other places I have stayed in the past in San Jose and Alajuela. It also had reliable internet, which is always a plus in Costa Rica. Overall it was just what I was looking for; affordable, friendly, comfortable and safe.

Very great budget hotel option near to San Jose Airport. We chose this location because we were driving to Monteverde the next day after landing at SJO later in the evening. We were able to park our car in their parking space overnight for a small fee. Very friendly staff with great recommendations. Simple room with tiny bathroom. We left the windows open with the fan on and were relatively cool for the evening. Safe and walkable to bars/restaurants - we went to La Calle Street Food which was great and located in a little courtyard social space. Free casado breakfast included and served in quaint outdoor space with coffee.

Sorry but I'm not sure if you're asking me, a former traveler, for direct information, which I'm not allowed to give. There should be a phone number on their website which you can use to make personal contact and secure the reservation you want. Hope you enjoy your stay.
