Hostel Mangifera (and Hotel Aeromundo) are the ONLY two hotels in Greacia itself. Every other hotel listed under Grecia located outside the city. Which means, you will have to get there either by car, or by taxi, or by additional bus from Grecia.
We found this hotel quite by chance. We arrived to Grecia with absolutely no reservations or any idea about the hotels. When we arrived by bus from SJ, we were shocked how untouristy Grecia is. No gringos, no tourist agencies, no internet places. We had to ask a taxi driver if there are any hotels in this city. )))
So, he told us about our two options.
Hostal Mangifera is located right at the main square, and has a wonderful view of the famous Grecia's Cathedral. The hostal is a private house converted to hostel. So, it still has a feel of a ... home. The owners (young guy named Marco, and his family) live in a private wing of the house. We had a "blue" room with was very spacious, with hard wood floors and a huge closet. The mattresses, pillows.. everything was of a great quality. The bathroom was impeccably clean and it had a bidet! Wow! It's the only place in Central America that has a bidet. I swear!
Marco was very accomodating and even cooked us our breakfast earlier then he officially would. The kitchen is lovely. I wish I had one like that in my house!

The hostel has a lovely backyard with gazebo and a balcony overlooking the central park.
Personally, I think that city of Grecia is sooooo much nicer and better than Alajuela. It's quieter, safer there.
And Marco made our stay so pleasant and memoriable.

The prices (as of August 2011) are as follows:
$34 for a master bedroom with it's own bathroom and a huge TV.
$28 for a double bedroom (shared bathroom)
$16 for a single
and $12 for a dorm room with bunkbeds.

There were only two other guests besides us staying at the hostel, so sharing a bathroom was not a problem.

Again, it's a lovely place at a very affordable price.

My only complain: it can get a bit noisy there from the passing by buses and church bells. But then again, I am a very light sleeper. My friend slept like a log through the night and did not hear a damn thing. )))

Here is the hotels website:

Stood at the Mangífera Hostel for 3 weeks! The plan was to stay for 3 days but I feel in love with Grecia and the amazing people! The hostel is in the absolute best location possible! The place was always clean thanks to the amazing ladies who clean the place. Hans & Oscar who run the hostel on a day to day basis are two of the nicest guys I have meet anywhere in Costa Rica! I will be back without a doubt soon! Highly Recommend staying here!!

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The hostel is located in the center of town just two blocks from the bus station. The second-floor balcony looks out over the central park and is perfect for relaxing and reading.

Had been packing around Costa Rica and planned to finish my trip in Grecia. I chose the hostel based on the reviews and the website that mentioned free shuttle service to and from the airport.

I emailed several times to confirm the booking and time for the pick up and every time they replied quickly and positively that there would be no problems, but on the day of nobody showed up. I was able to use a phone from a cabbie to call the hostel and they had no idea that anyone was arriving that day. I spent a ridiculous amount of money on a taxi to get there because bus logistics to Grecia are pretty complicated. When I arrived, there was no one at the hostel expect for a cleaning lady who didnt speak any english. The owner finally showed up around 630pm and didnt seem to apologetic about the confusion. He did admit that he overlooked my reservation, but ultimately said that there would be no shuttle.

There was no breakfast like the other reviews said and other than it being immaculately clean, it's not at all what this site claims it is.

Grecia, itself, is more of a local shopping and party city which has made most of it's wealth based on the never-ending car dealerships. The locals in this town speak little to no english and are much colder than the locals i met in other cities.

There are busses that go to some attractions but they go back towards San Jose to double back to the attractions. You have to plan a good 2-3hrs one way depending on traffic. Honestly, it's a great city if you're looking for a good time and party it up in Costa Rica for a weekend and this hostel would be a great place to stay because it's downtown Grecia and very centrally located to the bars and restaurants. But because of it's location right off the main street, it's quite loud on weekend party nights and during the week early mornings when all the trucks and cars are heading to work

If you're looking for a centrally located city, easily accessible to attractions with close amenities and quick to get to from the airport, I HIGHLY recommend staying in San Jose instead.

A great alternative to staying at lesser-quality places that are a little closer to the airport. Marco was patiently helpful with complex travel routing, knowledgeable and really cordial. Just a real personable guy. The property is beautiful and the walls are filled with murals from local artists that blew my mind. Great hangout area in the open courtyard out back. Arranged a couple inexpensive tours to Volcan Poas and La Paz Waterfall Gardens (with an impressive Nature Center) with Natasha, who was very informative and would slow the car to a stop if she even suspected I wanted to snap a scenery shot - very thoughtful. Great start to an amazing Costa Rica/Nicaragua journey! (Did I mention hot water showers?) Breakfast was typically pancakes/fruit or eggs/fruit - your choice most days. The 6 bed dorm with ensuite bath was comfy and clean. A little bit of motorcycle noise as the city is lively at night. Right off the dorm is a common area that accesses a balcony overlooking the Central Park and the famous Metal Church. The park is a great place to people-watch, eat or socialize. Nice little town and Marco can recommend some great food when you step out to explore.

The hostel is located right off the main park. It's a perfect location. The host was very nice and friendly. The garden was well-cared for and relaxing. We woke up to church bells and birds singing.
There are only two parking spots in their driveway and the only way to get in is through a narrow gate. We had a mid-size rental car so we actually decided to not chance getting in the narrow entrance, but we found parking on the same street and our car was fine. We would stay there again.

My two-day stay while looking for a house was very convenient and cheap ( I was on a limited budget!) The breakfast was delicious and custom-prepared! The room was clean and somewhat comfortable. The central location was helpful, although a little bit noisy at night.

We were only there for one night, and it was New Year's Day. There was a very big celebration with a band in the park just across the road from our window, and it was very noisy. However, I enjoyed the band and celebration, and got to walk around at night to stores and restaurants by myself (senior lady) that were very nearby and still open. To my delight, I found a Burger King and a store to buy a large duffle bag with wheels, since my backpack seemed to be getting heavier and heavier. The beds were hard, but that is because of the type of hotel it is. Although we saw two roaches, it was amazing clean considering that they had a garden that opened up into the hotel kitchen and lobby area. We did not get to stay for breakfast, so I don't know how that was, but they let us cook ourselves some eggs in the kitchen before we had to leave early and told us where to catch the next bus.

It is a clean and beautiful hotel with a nice garden but it can be noisy especially if the room is on the street side and the people working there are not really helphul. Our room did not have any key.

We stayed here only one night in a dorm room. Beds and bathroom were clean and comfortable. We had only problem with late breakfest, which was written from 7a.m. but nobody wasn't here, but after few minutes we found some man, who called an owner. Finally we had breakfest before 7.30 a.m. We were afraid about weather on Poas, but the sun was shining and we were happy for that :-) So I really recommend this acommodation.
