Just returned from a week at Villas Playa Samara over Christmas and feel relaxed and ready for the New Year. Overall the hotel was relatively clean although they seemed short staffed in cleaning the rooms and our bed linens were never changed during our 7 day stay even when requested despite a notice that they would be changed on alternate days. The food was good and tasty but the staff responsible for replenishing the buffet often had to be reminded that many dishes were empty or did not have serving utensils. The staff were uniformly pleasant and friendly and very welcoming! Good beachand safe for swimming and a variety of excursions available though they often require extensive bus trips to the sites.

This hotel has potential if the staff were all like Julian!

Check In

Check in is always a nightmare after a long flight. We were first in line, and there seemed to be confusion at the front desk. I did email weeks earlier to advise we were 4 couples and wanted to be located relatively close to one another. One couple was located on the other side of the resort.

The Room

Our room was attached to our friends, and was basically a master bedroom offshoot of the main chalet. It had a bed, closet and washroom. No TV, fridge, coffee machine and not even a rack to put the luggage on. I borrowed our friends kitchen chair. The safe was not attached to the wall. When I asked the front desk clerk he said it was meant to be on the shelf where I found it?(It was lighter than my wallet!!!) They later attached to the wall, but should have been addressed prior to our arrival! The bed was comfortable and room was clean.

The Beach

The beach was located in front of the property and was awesome. Not a lot of waves for surfing as it is protected by a reef, but warm for swimming. The walk to town only took about 30 Minutes which we did a number of times, which is easier on low tide. The chairs are limited on the beach, but lots of chairs on the Azura side, which were not being used. Azura is the sister hotel right next door to Playa Samara.

Food

Food was average and some days better than others. Coffee was on in the morning which was nice to grab a cup for early morning walk on the beach. One lunch they had hot dogs on tortillas! The specialty restaurant was average.

Excursions

We hired a local fisherman Francesco who took four of us out on a small fishing boat. We caught 3 tuna, grouper and some other fish. Great time. He only speaks spanish. The restaurant cooked up the tuna for us that evening.
841-665-98 He can be located on the beach early in the morning.

On the last day we hired someone to take us to the island off the beach to snorkel. The snorkelling was below average. They took us on low tide and the water was murky and rough. The women had a hard time getting into the water from the beach. We did see a number of sea turtles while kayaking which was the highlight.

Well at first reading the reviews I was very concerned. Our group had all ages. Myself and my partner, our children aged 15, 10 and 4 and my mom, her partner and my sister. We were looking for a safe family friendly resort that offered a great beach, pool and local activities. And we found exactly that.
If you are looking for a fancy hotel and prefer to be pampered this may not be the resort for you. But for adventure, beach fun and good drinks and food it satisfied us!
Beach was stunning, pool was great with zero level access (for little ones) swim up bar and volleyball net. Beach and pool were never overly crowded. Enjoyed the close proximity to a great town, via beautiful beach walk or short cab ride.
Buffet food and A La Carte were good, enjoyed breakfast fresh made omelettes, burgers or hot dogs for lunch on top of regular buffet.
Our room was great, cleaned daily and the staff was wonderful.
Bartender Arthur was great and hardworking, older gentleman and the bartender at the buffet area were awesome and experienced.
In fact the place was always being maintained by staff, taking care of the grounds and cleaning.
Game room was poor, the last 2 nights were over booked and things took a little longer... shortage of coffee, brief power outage and an hour or two water shortage. That being said... drinking water and beer were always available;)
We did find other people who had booked through online booking sites had more reservation problems than those who booked through Sunwing or Air Canada.
Overall an incredible vacation. Sergio (I believe his name was) booked our excursion and was incredibly helpful and personable.
We had a great time, looking forward to returning.

Check in on the 15th of Feb around 10:45PM Traveled with Sunwing - no room/ no reservation on file sent us to a Villas down the road.

Did get check in the next day around 4:00PM. No Sunwing rep ever showed up at resort to help solve any of our problems

Food below par, hotel run down. Not a good value for your money.

Then the big surprise, I notice a $600.00US charge on my credit card that is unauthorized, in fact only time my credit cards was out was at the front desk at check in. Emails the hotel 4 times this week, no response. Email Sunwing, no help from them.

Sunwing has demonstrated that they are not concerned with their customers safety or vacation experience

Stay away from this resort and from Sunwing

I will NOT ever recommend this resort. They claim to be a 4 start definitely not, their service is a 2-3 start. When checking in the staff were clueless, they kept writing on pieces of paper to make notes, we were unable to check into our room until 5pm. When we did they gave us a view of a chicken coop, construction area. They say there is wifi throughout, NOT, just by the pool and eating area. The first room we were in was filthy, torn sheets, stained walls and lamp shades. On the last night of our stay they served us "HOT DOGS" seriously, I was mortified. Definitely not worth what we paid. The only good thing about staying here was the access to the beach and weather. Website claims three restaurants, there is only a buffet and one a La Carte, it took them 20 minutes to give us a menu and serve us water. It was an hour by the time we got our meal, our last a La Carte we said forget it. It was like the staff had no training what so ever, most of them were clueless. I repeat I would never stay here again. Their sister resort, Azura, is not better for customer service, the same service is there.

Like most, we were overdue for a family vacation. It had been well over two years since we last had one and the comfort level between all of us was varying. We all agreed though, that an out of country vacation would be great.

We liked that this location was on a large, shallow and calm beach (great for beginner level surfing which some of us tried) and a reasonable distance from day trips we were primarily interested in. That’s the one thing I’d check before booking: make sure you know in advance what day excursions you’d want to take (if that’s your thing) and ensure you are willing to spend the time on a taxi or mini-bus to get there. Our upper limit was 2 hours one way and so we could considered some excursions just good far for a day trip, but did hear about some other families that drove 3+ hours to get to volcano and/or rainforest destinations. Our highlight was the canopy tour (ziplining) in Diamantes. The “Superman” line was just awesome!

The hotel and resort area was what you would expect during times when the tourism industry has been hit hard by the pandemic: a little in need of some updating but understandably catching up with the absence of tourism revenue and some of the amenities still impacted by COVID guidelines and restrictions. The grounds of the resort area were very well kept and, of course, COVID still can’t cheat you from having amazing beach weather, the sounds of nature and fresh and warm tropical breezes. The occupancy rate definitely seemed lower during pandemic times. As I mentioned at the beginning of my review, this suited us just fine as there weren’t large crowds anywhere to deal with, not much waiting for anything really and the only-site COVID testing made it real convenient. Although, thank goodness the testing requirement goes away for Canadians effective April 1st! That just seems like a money grab nowadays.

The staff of the resort was very responsive and warm. We were very well taken care of by the restaurant crew: Roger, Dago, Belen, Seney, Alex, Roxana, Josimar and Denin. Thank you all for making me and my family feel so welcomed!

The process of getting to and from Costa Rica/Canada was not as bad as I had prepared myself for. Yes, there were added steps but if you’re prepared, it’s not bad at all. I’m Taft, we left on 03/12, which would have been one of the busiest travel days of the year out of Pearson and we got to the airport and sitting at our gate within 30/40 minutes. It helped only having carry-on luggage. Upon return, despite a little congestion in the customs area when we first landed, we still got all the way through to our taxi within 45/55 min max. We were prepared for the worst and instead, this may have been the quickest we’ve been processed getting out and back into the country that we’ve ever experienced during a March break vacation.

Overall, we had a great experience. It was relaxing and are all feeling recharged and created some wonderful experiences. If your situation and expectations are in line with ours, I would highly recommend the Hotel Villas Playa Samara.

The hotel and villas are situated at the southern end of Samara Beach. The grounds were very well kept. The villas are fairly old and could use some TLC, but are impeccably clean. The villa (11A) we were assigned was spacious (living room, kitchen, large bedroom with king size bed) right on the beach, which allowed us to see the sunset from our patio and hear the breaking waves throughout the night. The AC in the bedroom was very efficient and quiet. As there were few guests at the hotel, all meals were “à la carte” and served in the main outdoor dining room. The food was the best I ever had in a resort, the meats are amazingly tender and tasty. Lots of tropical fruits could be had, according to the season. The staff was extremely helpful, courteous and friendly. Given that there were so few guests at the time, we were treated like royalty. The Hotel Azura hotel (individual rooms on three floors) next door is modern and has a selection of restaurants. The food is apparently exceptional, but we were not allowed access to those restaurants, although guests of the Hotel Azura were allowed to eat at our dining room. The pool at the Villas is spacious and includes a jacuzzi. Unfortunately, and unlike it was advertised on the Air Canada Vacations website, we did not have free access to bicycles, boogie boards or kayaks. We purchased our own boogie board in Samara at the New China market, whereas kayaks could be rented on the beach for 10USD/hour.
The waves are typically small at the south end of the Samara Beach. The village is about a 30-minute walk at the northern end of the beach. Slightly larger waves occur closer to Samara, but a very nice and more pristine beach with larger waves and very few tourists can be found a 15-minute walk away, south of the hotel, at Carillo Beach. Look for the crocodiles in the river at the south end of Carillo Beach.

We waited two hours for them to show us to our room. It is a family place with many many kids around. They are connected to an adults only and when we asked about switching the first time they told us it was $300 extra per night the next time we ask they said it was $400 extra per night. I had already paid $500 per night for our stay here. For anyone interested there is a Casa Buena Vista for $129 a night for a full beautiful bungalow. Don’t make the same mistake we did.
They leave you a coffee machine in your room with coffee cups but no coffee. The pool is small and the beach is full of parked trucks on either side and is incredibly small.

at 4pm it took them 4 hours to check us in to very sub standard room, we had booked Deluxe Ocean Front(not really on the beach). Room was very dirty, window glass missing(air therefore not cooling), no air cond. in main area(only in bedroom). management was rude and offensive, had 3 lights not working, furniture broken and fabric so dirty you would not want to sit on it. The front desk was hostile to any request. I understand "Air Canada" is reviewing them because of this.

I went with a large group, we were separated. Some of us at the Villas and some at the hotel. Apparently these are 2 septate areas on the property. The Villas are only allowed in the Villa areas,(1 buffet style restaurant), The 'hotel' is allowed anywhere and they have 2 other restaurants on site. The buffet style restaurant was ok, nothing to brag about. The staff were extremely friendly. The pool bar is minimal but still great service. The bar at the hotel had 3 bartenders and took about 15-20 minutes to get drinks out. We watched while 1 washed glasses, one stood there, and one made one drink at a time (when ordered 3 margaritas). As long as you can go with the flow, and not be in a hurry to get anywhere, you will be fine. If you're expecting fast service, be warned. Beautiful access to the beaches. All the villas are not equal. Our Villa had Air conditioning in the bedroom only. If I were to book again, I would stay in the hotel side, lower floor where you have your own private access to a mini pool, access to more restaurants, and still have beach access.

When I was there last month absolutely no work was being on it for their ‘renovations’. So I doubt it’s open yet

There is a TV in the bedroom and reception was very good. WiFi is excellent except in the villas closest to the beach where the signal is variable. Don't know about upgrade to two-bedroom villa, but when we were there in March 2022 there were few guest and several unoccupied villas. Several excursions can be booked from the hotel or from Samara. With the exception of some local outings (coral reef, perroquet), other excursions are 2.5 to 5-hour bus rides away.
