The first thing one needs to know about Selva Verde is that it is not trying to be a five star hotel; it is a nature lodge in the middle of the lowlands rain forest of Costa Rica. With that being said, it is wonderfully comfortable and well appointed unless you need air conditioning. (They do have air conditioned rooms...

Stayed for 4 nights in January 2016 with main goal of enjoying nature and birdlife. Was very satisfied - but this is an 'eco-lodge, not a 5 star hotel. The majority of the rooms are close together in the main complex - could be noisy due to school groups and nearby road traffic. A 10 minute walk away, hidden in...

There are many activities available at the lodge, such as bird-watching, forest night walk, swimming pool, etc. But for us the great advantage of staying here was the accessibility of attractions within a short distance such as La Selva Biological Station, Frog Heaven, the Chocolate Tour and Nature Pavilion. There are trails within the grounds available for hikes, a bird...

This was an overnight stop on our Costa Rica tour. From the road it was not that impressive but as we walked along the raised wooden walkway beside the Sarapiqui River to our luxury chalet, we got the feeling that the place was something special. A walk across a hanging bridge over the river (safe but wobbly) and through the...

As we drove up I have to admit I was slightly concerned as it looked like it was on a man road. But I was pleasantly surprised to find the rainforest, hummingbirds and birds and cute frogs for photography. We stayed 3 nights. It rained the entire time. They were prepared with covered walkways almost any where you wanted to...

This is a beautiful lodge located in sarapiqui, about 2 hrs from San Jose. The forest is so dense around that you can spot several jungle friends right from your room. We loved their hospitality, and the founder of this lodge a sweet, elderly lady Giovanna Holbrook is always there talking to the guests. If you are into nature, birds...

We stayed in La Casona, an absolutely stunning suite with a full kitchen, lounge and air-con throughout. Unfortunately, this accommodation backed onto the road, which starts to get busy with heavy trucks around 5:30 in the morning. An unpleasant and unnatural wake up call. You can't move for nature here. Frog, monkey, birds, anything and everything is easy to spot,...

This amazing private nature preserve, founded by JoAnn, I think (?) in the 1980's is the perfect, perfect, perfect small resort! You are surrounded by dense jungle, wildlife everywhere, wonderful rustic accommodations, fresh good food, and a very friendly welcoming vibe! Jo Ann (in her 80's now) is around most every day, eating with the different groups, happily telling her...

Don't let the road fool you: there are few places I've been, including Africa, with such an abundance of bird and wildlife species thriving so exuberantly all around. Gustavo and Ilium the best hosts, guides Ivan and Ronald extraordinary fonts of cool scientific details about the layers of eco systems alive here. If you want a tv and an ashtray,...

Arriving at this hotel I was sceptical, it seems to be on a main road and looks like a garage or something and I was fully expecting to be disappointed, but don't be so quick to judge! We were handed a Mao to find our room and after quite a long walk down an open (but covered) wooden walkway you...
