We stayed for a week at the Playa Negra Guesthouse and cannot describe how perfect this was for us. We traveled with our children, age 9 and 10, and three grandparents. We stayed in the Yellow Cottage and the grandparents stayed in smaller rooms.
First, great location. Right on the beach and easy to pop back to your room if you forgot something, or to make some sandwiches for lunch and head right back to the beach. Near town, but far enough away for a more relaxed time.
Our guesthouse room had all our needs plus a very strong A/C unit to cool our room while we slept. We slept great while staying at Playa Negra Guesthouse. Close access to the beach and an on-site pool were great features. It was our honeymoon...More

Arenal is about 90 kms northwest of San José; Cahuita to San José is about a 3½ hour drive. I would easily add another 2 hours to get to Arenal and this if traffic is good! A better option is to stay in Alajuela first, visit the volcano and then head to Cahuita. Going to Poás Volcano is also a great option. You can stop off at the Doka coffee plantation and the La Paz waterfalls/ animal sanctuary. Very interesting! We stayed in San José in order to do this excursion. We hired a guide and went by minivan. Good luck.

Sorry, I don't know the answer. We had rented a car because we planned to travel to various parts of the country while we were there. If you've already made arrangements to stay at Playa Negra, you could try to reach out to the owners Marise and Pierre. And give them my best!!

"Possibly a second floor room on the main building would be cooler...but I'd get a room elsewhere with AC!"
