This hotel is an ideal spot right on the Caribbean. Great for swimming and walking. The beach bar is a treat and the meals are excellent and very good value. The staff are very friendly and helpful. You can see sloths and iguana and lots of birds in the grounds. This was our last long stay before heading home and...

If I had to only pick one word, it would be Paradise!! When we first started planning our vacation, we knew we wanted to find a place that was peaceful, fun, warm feeling, and rejuvenating. I first picked the location, the south Caribbean cost of Costa Rica, then with the help with reviews and some research. I found what seemed...

How often does the actual location look as good as the pictures? This place does. It's beautiful. The rooms, the balcony, the pool, the beach. We loved it. The service was also really great, from the front desk, to the activities desk, to the food and drink service. We had a great stay. They also have good food!

We stayed here for 5 nights in the Sloth cabina and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. It was roasting hot over 42 degrees on each of the days but the ceiling fan and floor fan did the job of keeping the room tolerable to sleep in. The restaurant was very good and the food was excellent in the hotel with the...

Banana Azul is everything you want a small, intimate, tropical resort to be. Gorgeous location, beautiful gardens, excellent rooms, immaculate, great food, friendly staff, and friendly owner. The attention to every detail - without being fussy or precious- is evident. I was sad to leave and hope to return soon. Can't say enough positive things about my experience here.

This little hotel is a real gem with direct access to the beach (black sand) and a beautiful 20 minute walk on the beach to Puerto Viejo. The staff is lovely and very accommodating and the free coconut water on the beach is a definite plus. I would have given a better rating but I have 3 little issues: 1)I...

I cannot say enough good things about this hotel. We had one of our best travel experiences with the banana azul. The private beach area and hotel grounds are spectacular, the staff was so friendly and helpful, and the room was awesome! We stayed in the red frog room, which was a vacation in itself. The room had a rain...

My husband and I and 5 other friends stayed 5 nights in the ocean view rooms. The hotel rooms, service, grounds and staff exceeded our expectations. We have traveled and stayed in many great places and this was truly one of the best we have ever experienced. I can't say enough about the staff here, so helpful and kind right...

The hotel is very beautiful and clean. The front desk staff and tours desk were attentive and helpful. I had an ocean view room and was very pleased. The building is made out of wood so the floors squeak. Also, the bed frame is wooden so it squeaks as well when getting in and out of bed. Not a big...

We had a pleasent stay at the Banana Azul. Staff in the reception, restaurant and, bar were always extremely friendly. The rooms are nice and big, best part is the very large balcony with hammocks and partial ocean view. Unfortunately, it was raining a lot so we were not able to make use of the beach. There is a choice...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of 22 beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans (some with A/C), and free WiFi. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Caribe Fun Tours is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
