2020 Travellers' Choice Best of the Best
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of 25 beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans (some with A/C), and free WiFi. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Caribe Fun Tours is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions.

Out of all of my travels in Central America I have never come across a resort that had fresh coffee available at 5:30 in the morning like Banana Azul. But wait, they not only had coffee ready outside our rooms at 5:30 but also on the beach at 5:30. If you are not an early riser like me this may not seem significant but it should tell you a little about how much thought the management puts into guest services. From the cabana cleanliness and lay out to the resort services everything was very well thought out with nice details. We very much enjoyed our stay and are looking forward to another stay in the future. Good job Banana Azul!

Location is great just outside of Puerto Viejo. Well lit signage to locate the hotel. Beach front on property is good, and don't forget to try boogie boarding for free while you are there. Food is amazing. No but its actually amazing and well priced. Stayed in the Villas Banana Verde. Nice room, but some strange design choices. Example: Downstairs door, you lock it with a key from the inside. Have to lock the bathroom door to close it (able to lock someone in from the outside). Quiet room, but you can feel the springs in the bed. Also, the room key was attached to a massive wooden banana. Service is good, Brian and Luis were both great! Ability to rent bike and check out the local beaches.

Beautiful clean, sparkling black sand beach. Gorgeous landscapes and pool area. Service in the hotel and restaurant/bar was wonderful. There were red flag warnings throughout our stay so we didn't get in the ocean. We enjoyed walking along the roads and spotting wildlife. We taxied into town for lunch and shopping. It was busy and covid compliant. The gourmet grocery across the road was a pleasant surprise! Our Ocean view room had a great veranda and we spent loads of time there.
