This was our third visit and happily we found that nothing has changed since our last stay 3 years ago. The grounds are beautiful- Rick who does the garden design is great. Even though it looks perfect we noticed that a staff member was busy planting additional new plants throughout the property. This boutique hotel is really the perfect place...

We've been to Banana Azul a few times and love it. Super laid back atmosphere, and Colin is a fantastic host/owner. Puerto Viejo has it's own vibe -- makes me think of what Key West was like 50 years ago -- it's where all the VW flower power buses went to retire. Great to grab a bike at the hotel...

Wow Toby. I don't recall anyone ever saying I was "fantastic and super laid back". I will be sure and use you as a personal reference should I need one. Yes, being a 60's child, I too wonder where all the hippies are gone. Sometimes, with the right music, the right time and the right weather, I get in touch...

This place was like its own little paradise. The beach was on the doorstep, the food was healthy and delicious, the staff were very friendly and so helpful. The weather was tropical but there are bars in the town and the Rescue Centre was great to see rehabilitated animals. Very cute all in all.

Thanks for the great review despite the less than ideal climate during your stay. January is a month with heavier rain. Thankfully most comes at night. But, we will have days that will have showers and overcast clouds for the day(s). I am from Vancouver Canada, so I am used to the rain. That does not mean I love it....

One of the best places. Clean, friendly, great staff and food. They even surprised me with a birthday basket... very unexpected. Decent price as well! Room was clean, great view, and beautiful. Close walking distance to town. Bikes readily available

My husband and I stayed at the Banana Azul for a week during the Christmas holiday. What a beautiful place and right on the Caribbean! All the gardens and pool are amazing, complete with a Koi and turtle pond! All the staff from the owner to the groundkeepers were very friendly, fun and very professional. We had a blast! The food...

Really enjoyed my stay here. Friendly staff, right next to a great beach and lovely rooms for the price. Has almost a backpacker resort feel to the lobby so great place to sit and read and hangout with a beer in the evening

If you like boutique hotels, then you will love this spot! It's a rare find on this coast--far enough from the noise of town and close enough for a quick bike ride when you want to change things up. The owners are onsite and welcoming. By the time you leave, you will know all their incredible and attentive staff. Having...

We had a great three nights at Banana Azul. The garden is perfect and we saw lots of colourful birds and twice a sloth, also it is right on the beach. The breakfasts were excellent and it is well run and very friendly. We enjoyed relaxing on the large balcony. We walked into the lovely town of Puerto Viejo along...

We stayed in Ocean Room 2 and it was incredible. The private patio was definitely the highlight of the room. We could see the ocean, but the noises of the ocean and wildlife\insects was incredible. Another adirondack or sitting hammock would have been nice, but we were just fine with what was provided. The free breakfast was delicious and the...

Hola Courtney. Yeah, it's a journey getting here. We like to think it keeps out the riff-raff ;-). Just a note on our dinner prices. This is an issue we have struggled with. We are a small place and we have to generate a certain income level to keep our bar and restaurant open. So, for dinners, to try and...

Banana Azul and the staff went beyond our expectations at every turn. First off all, this little hotel off the beaten path is absolutely stunning. The only thing the pictures do not make you feel is the serene calmness you get you when you sink your feet into the powdery sand at the beach - which is just out the...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Gecko Trail Adventures tour company is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
