My wife and I have stayed at BA twice - we fell so in love with it the first time (i have a previous review on here somewhere) that we decided to make it out honeymoon destination. There are some truly outstanding employees, which saved the experience for us the second time around. Unfortunately, we found the menu to be...

If you love huge 5 star resorts with giant pools, crowded white sand beaches and millions of drink and food choices then Banana Azul is not for you. If you want a small, beautiful and clean hotel that displays all of the culture and character of the Caribbean jungle village it is nestled in then Banana Azul is your place!...

We have enjoyed this caribbean expirience. This hotel is really relaxing. Maybe our highlight was to be served coffee on the beach in the morning and listen to the waves.... There is also a nice pool and garden to enjoy. The hotel offered suncream, snorkeling equipment, board games etc. for free. Cocktails are delicious! Don´t miss the nearby Cahuita National...

My girlfriend and I travelled all over Costa Rica and finished at Banana Azul. It was the perfect end to a wonderful trip. Very relaxing beach atmosphere. Staff was great. Nice bike ride to the downtown area. Takes about 10 minutes on bike to get to anything you need. Definitely recommend BA to anyone. Only thing that I found annoying...

My partner and I had a great time here. Gardens are excellent. Staff is excellent. Gecko tour desk also available for any activities you may need. Short taxi or longer walk into town. Wonderful breakfast buffet included and great lunch and dinner meals as well. The only down side we experienced was that the shower was often cold water with...

Thanks so much for your wonderful review. I am sorry to hear about the hot water. I was not aware of this. It is combination solar and electric. Thanks for alerting us. I will look into it right away. Glad to know it did not ruin your experience. Cheers, Colin.

We just returned from a very enjoyable vacation in Costa Rica. Our first stop was at the Banana Azul. It certainly had everything we needed! The Banana Azul is a small hotel nestled in the forest along Playa Negra near Puerto Viejo de Talamanca. I hadn't been to this coast in many, many years. What a difference! Now, where do...

Banana Azul is a hotel for those who wants to experience something special during their vacation. Really charming and special style lodging. We loved the rooms with he balconys, the gardens, the closeness to the fantastic beach, the possibility to use chairs on the beach. The people working on this hotel are all fantastic - very laid back match with...

I've put four stars because it really is a beautiful hotel and the owner, Colin, is a very friendly guy. I've been stewing about this for a while, though. I just didn't know how to say it. This hotel is featured on many gay websites as a great place for the gay traveler. I just returned from six days there...

Hey Bob, I agree with your assessment 100%. Banana Azul is not ideal for many solo travellers (gay men included) 9 years ago when Roberto and I bought the property, it was our intention to open a hotel that catered to the gay & lesbian community. We realized right away, that going in this direction would not pay the bills....

When you book 10 months in advance you end up with extremely high expectations. They were all met. Funny to read people complaining about the balconies and how people could just come into your room. Just one question: Did they? Felt very safe and secure. Food was fantastic. Nice to see Franklin has moved up to owner. Does Colin know?...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Gecko Trail Adventures tour company is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
