We arrived at Banana Azul late, after a long, exhausting day of travel. The room was clean and perfect-- a large bed in a separate air-conditioned area, a beautiful green tile tub and a comfy hammock. In the morning we ate breakfast in a lovely central area surrounded by a moat full of turtles and koi. It was raining but...

I spent 9 days at Banana Azul, Puerto Viejo from the 20th to 29th October 2012. Firstly David on reception was first class and nothing was too much trouble for him to help me, especially when hurricane Sandy hit New York and I was trying to rearrange my travel arrangements. Also Colin the owner is very friendly and makes one...

This was a lovely start to our costa rican vacation! Franklin at the bar makes the best banana daqueries and coladas! But the pace of the entire country is very slow, so don't expect your order to be ready as quick as in the US. The rooms were charming and clean. There are no TVs or AC but im assuming...

My husband and I stayed here for two weeks in September / October 2012. We stayed in 'The Apartment' suite. All I can say is this is a fantastic place. Its beautiful, quint, & clean with super friendly & helpful staff. The apartment was awesome. Its in a separate building from the main hotel, so it gives you that extra...

Cant say anything bad about my time in Costa Rica, especially at Banana Azul. It all started with my taxi ride with Frank who I highly recommend and can be reached locally at 8749-1052 on his cell phone. He is an honest man and will give you a good price. NOW ON TO MY REVIEW! Sorry Colin for the 4...

We chose this hotel based on other reviews. We loved it! The grounds are beautiful and very tropical. We stayed in the garden room. Yes, as the website picture shows, the room itself is small. However it has air conditioning and satellite tv-which you can change the language english to watch and understand most shows! We saw a ocean view...

We stayed at the Hotel Banana Azul in early October, 2012 Getting there: Not an easy task. The hotel is about a 4 ½ to 5 hour drive from the San Jose Airport over winding, twisting roads so you will need a rental car or hire a transport to take you there. If you are driving, you need to leave...

We just returned from spending part of our honeymoon at Banana Azul in the Howler Suite (best beach view in the house)! The food in the restaurant is amazing, and I'd recommend having all of your meals right there. I eagerly anticipated breakfast through dinner daily. The property is well located to walk into town on the beach and partake...

My boyfriend and I planned on staying at Banana Azul at the end of our 3 week trip in Costa Rica. We had booked on the recommendation of a lesbian couple who had just gotten married and stayed there for their honeymoon. When our 2 day rafting trip got cut short due to high water, we didn't know what to...

Wonderfully relaxing, whether lounging on the beach, soaking in the pool or hammocking on the balcony. Great food and drink, and friendly, helpful team running the place. Puerto Viejo town centre was a bit a wander but we didn't feel tempted to leave the property at all.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Banana Azul hotel is a small and simple hotel north of town on Playa Negra. The small boutique hotel has been created with care using local products and a philosophy that emphasizes relaxation. We cater to adults, 16 years and over. Blooming gardens adorn the property, as does several freely-hanging hammocks, providing the perfect spot for afternoon napping or leisurely reading. A meandering pond inhabited by fish and turtles flows through portions of the property adding a lighter element to the ongoing natural soundtrack of waves crashing against the shoreline. The hotel consists of fourteen beautiful guest rooms with private baths, fans, and free wireless internet. Most rooms are on the second floor of the main building, and open onto a large veranda with sweeping ocean views and of the garden. Banana Azul offers its guests a quaint restaurant that serves a complimentary filling breakfast, variety of lunch options and refreshing drinks throughout the day and a relaxing three entre dinner option in a romantic atmosphere at night. Gecko Trail Adventures tour company is on site to assist with tours and transportation needs and can assist with a variety of package options including visits to the Arenal Volcano, canopy tours, snorkeling trips, and even rafting excursions. ... more   less
