The area of Tortuguero is rightfully called The Amazon of Costa Rica because access is only by boat on Jungle Rivers. Turtle Beach Lodge, 5 miles north of the town of Tortuguero, is a secluded resort spanning 175 acres with miles of jungle trails, a meandering private canal, and a half mile of beach adjoining still more isolated beaches. The lodge accommodates approximately 80 guests; assisted by a well trained staff and guides who ease you into an exciting jungle experience. Stay in the beautifully landscaped cabinas, swim in our turtle shaped pool, relax in the adjacent shady hammock hut with food and drink from the restaurant and bar.

We stayed for 3 nights at the lodge and we enjoyed every minute of it. We availed ourselves to night time boat tours of the Canals and to a jungle walk. Both times we saw an amazing variety of flora and fauna. It takes about an hour to arrive by boat to the lodge. The rooms are not air conditioned, but there is a large fan in each. Everything has to be brought to the lodge by boat. The beach is pristine, but we warned that it was very dangerous to swim because of the riptides and the possibilty of being washed out to sea. These are the same beaches that the sea turtles return to lay their eggs during season. The meals in the lodge were adequate, the food was plentiful and good, but not fancy. My wife and I really enjoyed the experience and would return. The lodge does have a pool and a bar. The lodge recommends not to drink the water, but they provide drinking water 24/7 free of charge. The monkeys were loud during one evening when a thunderstorm occurred. All in all, a great experience. This is not a typical tourist destination. It is more appropiate for those seeking to experience Costa Rica's natural wonders.

This lodge is nestled in the tropical jungle in Torugurero National Park. The only way to get there is by boat and is about a 2.5+ journey into the jungle. The lodge is surrounded on one side by the jungle and on the other by the Carribean Ocean. The accomodations are simple and clean and serve as the perfect place to land after long days of exploring the abounding nature. The guides and boat captians are fabulous and share all that they know about what we were seeing. 3 meals a day are served in an open air dining area and the food is good and there is indeed plenty of it. This is the perfect place to get away from the chaos of the world and to relax into the arms of Mother Nature.

Amazing remote location on a rustic Caribbean beach: friendly staff with a nice pool and a great place to go out on boat tours and guided walks from. Room was basic but adequate with a ceiling fan. Only down side we felt was the bland food and very little contrast from day today with it. Always served at the same times if you missed that hour slot you would probably miss your meal. The night boat trip I didn’t feel was as good as the early morning one, a lot more to see at Dawn on the wildlife front.

We stayed for two nights as part of a tour. The room whilst large had open mesh covered windows and a very small bathroom which was all a little tired. Food was buffet with a limited choice. The beach is a short walk but due to currents is not recommended for swimming. The main attraction is the wildlife tours via boat along the canals which we enjoyed. Well kept grounds and an opportunity to do a nature walk, although the ground was muddy and the wellies available from the hotel were definitely needed. A small pool with limited sun beds was also available. An interesting visit to a unique location.

Paradise in the world! Is my 4th trip there. If you want peace, blue water, white beaches and turtles you really have to come here. People are super friendly and local food is very good. For the one's looking for peace and relaxation. Highly recommended

We booked a 3 days tour with a transfer from San Jose. Beautiful location in the jungle and at the sea side. Since we did not see much from the motor boat we did a tour on our own with a kayak and managed to see much more animals than with the guide. The rooms are simple but embedded in the nature, you get the wake up call from the monkeys every morning. There is a swimming pool and a bar that proposes good cocktails. The food was ok, especially we enjoyed the soups. Nice staff. Overall beautiful and peaceful place to rest for two days.

We weren’t sure what to expect having read some negative recent reviews, especially about staff. They have clearly sorted out any issues that existed and we had great service from arrival to departure.

The accommodation and food are fairly basic but appropriate for the location, especially when considering everything needs to come in by boat! However, the location is amazing, arrival is like joining Raiders of the Lost Ark! We saw some amazing things and thoroughly enjoyed the boat excursions - and the super kayak adventure we organised.

Sadly, I can’t remember the name of the barman. However, he’s brilliant and looked after us so well after hard days exploring!

If you decide Tortuguero is part of your Costa Rica trip, we would recommend this hotel.

We were shocked to discover how wonderfully remote Turtle Beach Lodge is. We took a domestic flight to Tortuguero from San Jose (highly recommend!) and landed on a small landing strip next to canals. We were met by a “lancha” (boat) driver, a hotel employee, Anselmo. My son and I were his only passengers as he drove us through the main canal and then turned onto a side canal through which we drove for at least 30 minutes. I think Turtle Beach is the most remote lodge in the area. It is situated next to the Caribbean coast and we walked along the ocean there. Anselmo knows the canal so well and he gave us a great tour, swinging the lancha in along the way to show us sights. For example, he knew where the aligátor lived and cruised near him, slowing so we could see him. He also showed us birds along the way. This, despite the fact that he cannot hear or speak, but was able to communicate with gestures! Such a kind man. All meals were included and served in a great open-air restaurant. The rooms were as advertised with the primary amenity being a ceiling fan. The rooms had screens and were open-air as well, so one hears all the amazing jungle sounds constantly. The beds and bathroom were basic and fine. The tour guide, Alfredo, lives at the Lodge and speaks English and Spanish. He was friendly and helpful as were all the hotel staff. The purpose of our visit (and actually our reason for going to Costa Rica) was to see the sea turtles laying eggs and we did! We went on a night tour and saw two females laying eggs. An experience of a lifetime. Being at Turtle Beach Lodge and in Tortuguero was like being in another world: deep in the jungle, traveling via waterways, amazing insects you only see in the jungle. I am glad we stayed at Turtle Beach Lodge versus being closer to the town of Tortuguero which is more touristy. This was a completely unique experience.

We booked a two night stay directly on their own website a month in advance. We received a confirmation listing the confirmation number, the dates, and the price. “Your booking is complete!”

Three days before we were due to arrive we tried to contact them to arrange transport. Their website has one email address and one phone number. Neither works. Their Facebook page has a different phone number and a different email address. Neither works. No one answers the chat on their website.

Finally, the day before we were scheduled to arrive, we reached them through WhatsApp. They said they had no record of our reservation. When we sent them the confirmation, they said their website was in beta mode and should not be used. Too bad for us. They didn’t even apologize. They did try to accommodate us for one of the two nights we were going to be there.

These people do not have their act together.

We stayed 2 nights at the Turtle Beach Lodge in February 2022. It was very well organized trip from pick up at San Jose to return at Guapiles. Our Guide Edgar was very kind and knowledgeable. He payed attention to every person of the group and proposed interesting activities. The tour in the canals was amazing. the rooms are OK without extensive comfort but good enough for our stay. The lodge personnel is very helpful and nice. I recommend the lodge!

I don't remember there being any hair dryers. . . but again, you could ask reception for one. This place is so beautiful, but rustic, and the humidity is such that I just clipped my hair up in a bun, and left if there. If you have short hair, towel dry and go natural!
