We took the surfing + Spanish + yoga combo. Had a lot of fun at Jaco. Staffs are very friendly. Surfing instructors are very experienced and makes me feel safe. Spanish teacher took us to different cute places for field trips. Thank you School of the World, I'll come back one day!

I went to the School of the World for a week mainly for surfing and I found lovely people and a great atmosphere and I can't wait to go back. The School is located super well in Jaco, it is run super efficiently and to the maximum. I stayed in a double room, which was clean and ac, and I loved it. They have a fully equipped kitchen and filtered water you can use. There are also lots of nice chilling areas and a pool. I meet people from all over the world and of different ages. The surf instructors were some of the best I've ever had.

I will definitely go back!

I ended up at SOTW through a recommendation from a fellow traveler and I'm super grateful for that advice, it was a fantastic experience. I arrived there not knowing how long I would stay but made a really easy decision to spend a full month. Everyone I met from the staff to the other guests were always welcoming and willing to give advice about the area. The school itself is a beautiful property with a great relaxing vibe, the rooms were some of the nicest I've stayed in anywhere, and there's a big open kitchen with everything needed for meal prep. I was only taking the Spanish class and Laura the instructor is a very professional and caring teacher who adjusts to every level of ability and makes sure time is well spent. If you're planning on visiting the Jaco area I highly recommend SOTW. It is one of the coolest places to spend time. Especially if you're looking for quality classes in surf, Spanish, yoga etc. this should be your #1 CHOICE.

It was my second visit to the School of the world, and I loved it even better than the first one. The staff there is a true family! I fell in love with surfing and Costa Rica because of these people! The surf instructors are very professional and can accommodate any level surfer. They even video-record you, so you can look at yourself from aside, reflect and adjust your surfing technic. Constant feedback, dynamic training. Besides that, I was very happy with the amenities like internet, hot and cold water, filtered water to drink, a kitchen with lots of appliances, AC, tv lounge, pool, a close-by store with fruits and vegetables, affordable soda place (local food), no need to walk to the beach for surfing, etc.
If you are looking for a great experience, this is the place to visit!
Much of love to the School of the World!

Amazing place to surf and learn Spanish. The building has some beautiful trees with lots of iguanas and hummingbirds that you can watch straight out of the classroom. The rooms / the building are styled with a focus on eco tourism which perfectly underlines the beautiful nature of the country.

I spent a week taking Spanish with my fantastic teacher Fernanda. She was friendly, kind, patient and fun. I learned a lot from not knowing any Spanish at all. I want to learn Spanish for both work and travel and this was the perfect relaxed and focused environment to do it. I am returning in February for another week! I would also like to try surfing , yoga and photography on future trips. I took one surf lesson with Juan and he got me up on the board riding my first (small) wave. It was a blast and Juan was a great coach.
I stayed at a different hotel but would absolutely stay at the school. Its a clean and beautifully designed high-ceiling building filled with art and everyone there makes you feel like family.
The classrooms all have large sliding doors on both sides so you almost feel like you are learning outside.
I loved my week there and can't wait to return in three months!

I love school of the world. My husband and I visited for the first time in August 2022 for a week. This year we came back for 2 weeks and I still don't think we were there long enough. All of the staff are amazing but Jason and Fernanda make this a place we want to come back to for a third time.
Jason is one of the surf instructors, he has straightforward, no nonsense, safety conscious coaching style which combined with the enormous effort he puts into helping new surfers get the most out of their time in the water made both of my trips the best vacations I've ever taken. I appreciated the care he gave and his ability to intuitively know what I needed to improve everyday we were in the water.
I worked with a few of the other surf instructors as well and they are all top notch.
Fernanda is the Spanish teacher and if you go to school of the world and don't take the Spanish classes I think your missing out. Fernanda is amazing at working with students at a variety of levels and making sure you are getting the most you can out of time both spent in the classroom and in labs. The labs are different depending on the students and what we want to do. Things like zip lining, crocodile tours, waterfall hikes ect have an additional cost but by going with Fernanda your guaranteed to have a great experience. Everything Fernanda has organized has both improved my Spanish and been a lot of fun.

Overall this is a great vacation with a nice mix of activites, opportunity to socialize, and time to relax. It's like a choose your own adventure book.

I had an amazing time at School of the World! There were not too many guests there while I was there which was actually fun because I ended up with my own room and the surf lessons felt a lot more private. I ended up staying an extra week and a half because I had such a blast! Everyone is so friendly and accommodating and made my time there perfect. Also the wifi is really strong so I was able to do work while I was there. I'll definitely be back!

I had a great time at the School of the World. First, let me say, I am not a surfer - I was there for the Spanish and photography classes. I should also mention that I'm in my late 50's and although most of the other students were 20+ years younger than me I had a great time! (although there were a couple of folks that came in and out that were older than me during my stay) I was extremely happy with the classes and the living situation. I had a private room downstairs my first 2 weeks and a private deluxe room upstairs the last week. Although the private room downstairs was fine, I'd recommend any of the rooms upstairs (private or deluxe) as there is more light and air in the rooms. Fernanda did a great job keeping our Spanish classes on track and speaking Spanish, the labs were so much fun and just added to the benefits of going to the SotW. My photography skills improved ten fold under Sergio's mentorship - not only do I take better photos but now I know how to edit them to make them even better. I was thrilled to be able to do this with my iPhone as I tend to have that with me when I happen upon a great picture and now I can maximize that opportunity without carrying a big camera. We also visited so many great places around Jaco during photography classes, I got a great inside view of the area that I wouldn't never have seen as a regular tourist. Maria, Victoria and Pedro, the people that oversee the school day to day were fantastic too - so charming and let me practice my Spanish as much as I wanted with them! The building itself is beautiful, indoor/outdoor living, far enough from the main town to feel calm but close enough to walk to for meals or groceries. I can't wait to go back!

Amazing place to surf and relax with great people! I stayed here for my 3rd time with my friend. There was never a time where I didn't feel like I wasn't staying at a second home. The staff are so friendly and the instructors are professionals and really great educators, you will see a spike in progress even after a few days of surfing. The school is also close to amazing restaurants and walking distance to the beach. Highly recommend.

You will love it. I am much older than you are and stayed there for a week a couple months ago. There are always a few older ones. Ask to get a single room with air condition and separate bath room (on the second floor). Stash are superb and it is a couple blocks from the beach. I took Spanish just for fun and often dragged kids out to drink with me. Just relax and you will enjoy it.

I only took Spanish here. There are two female teachers and the Spanish program evolves around surfing but not that bad. I had plenty of time to work and/or going out to practice and have fun alone (most if not all students also taking other courses. I found the teacher (mine) very good and energetic. The School has to building for housing, classes and community kitchen (clean and very homey). As for practice, walk out to the street, plenty of chances. For me, when I get out. I went straight to English speaking place because of my homework and practice in class.

The kitchen is a shared. There is free coffee, so you don't have to bring that (you may need to make it in the morning, it goes fast). Every food item you could need is at "mas o menos" (a Walmart company) that is a short walk. Also there is a fruit shop that is right across the street. I wouldn't bring any food unless you have dietary restrictions or want something specific, like a specific brand of coffee. per your question, you need to have your own spices. People leave unused stuff, but no guarantee what you want will be there. Most people keep a lot of their food stuff in their rooms. The rooms all have refrigerators, sinks, and dishes. I don't think people were taking things on purpose, but it was unclear if things like cooking oil, salt and other staples were shared or provided by the school. All the standard cooking utensils needed were available to use. The kitchen and rooms has dish soaps, and they give you a small bar of shower soap, but you need to bring your own shampoos and conditioners, etc. Hope this helps and you have a blast. I really enjoyed my time there. Please tell Cristian and Kirstin that I say hi! They probably won't remember me, but I remember them!
