This place is unique, remote and life changing. First the hike from Carate to Leona warms you up for what is coming. Then the welcome from the staff, a glass of cold water and a nice chat with someone really interested in what you have to say. Then you give up your belongings that need to be in the safe...

Great stay! When in Carate go and stay at Leona. It's a bit of a hassle to get there but that's the charm. In dry season: drive to Carate (don't let Lonely Planet scare you about this drive), park your car, leave the luggage with the horseman and walk to the lodge. It's a lovely hike (not very far) where...

La Leona Eco Lodge is located between Playa Carate and one of the main entrances to Corcovado National Park. The name La Leona - meaning Lioness or female lion - is derived from the ancient assumption by locals that the Puma, which is widely found in the area, was a female lion. La Leona is owned by Walter and Salma...

I stayed 2 nights in the Monkey Camp (was originally booked for 3 nights, but my flight from the US was canceled - long story). My tent had a beautiful view of the jungle and the Pacific, could see the waves breaking through the trees! It was amazing to be woken up before dawn by birds and howler monkeys (!!!),...

This "eco lodge" has all the promise to be a memorable experience. Unfortunately, we had a bad one. To access the lodge, you have to hike in about 4K along the beach. The views are spectacular and you have no idea what to expect. Once you get to the lodge, there are tents with shared bathrooms. We had one of...

We stayed at La Leona for about 6 nights over the 2016 Christmas holiday and had a WONDERFUL time! A few things to know: --Traveling there: we flew from the USA to San Jose, took a connecting Sansa flight to Puerto Jimenez, and then a cab to Carate. From the Carate beach, it's about a 45 minute walk (either on...

The staff are really helpful and there is great hospitality. The setting is also perfect and tranquil with nature all around you. However we do have some reservations. The food is, in our view, grossly overpriced and you can't go anywhere else without a 3km walk, which you can't do at night anyway. Lunch is now $20 and dinner $25....

I recently stayed at the La Leona Eco Lodge (December, 2016). I strongly recommend staying here regardless of your alternatives. First, it's owned by a Costa Rican family, so you are supporting the wonderful people of this country. Jobs for Costa Ricans can be scarce, so this is important. Second, it's truly an Eco Lodge--with integrity and a true commitment...

Beautiful eco friendly hotel in an amazing spot of Costa Rica. Just getting there is a beautiful experience. We booked a Nacional Park Corcovado tour with Guide and we saw a young powerful puma chasing some "pizotes" . An amazing experience. People at the hotel were wonderful with us. Great food. The instalations are great to keep contact with nature...

Pictures or descriptions will not do this place justice! From the hour drive from Puerto Jimenez and the 40 minute walk along the completely deserted beach you will be captivated by the beauty of nature in the amazing part of the world. The scarlet macaws fly by, howler monkeys echo in the distance and spider monkeys play in the trees...
