This was my second time at Campanario (my wife’s first) and it was really good to go back. It’s a great way to see a beautiful, unspoilt part of the world and the fact it’s off grid and remote just adds to the experience. As well as a fantastic location, it’s a really friendly place to stay. We felt welcome... More

Absolutely loved this place! My husband and I came here on our honeymoon, hoping for an adventure we would never forget and found that here. Staff, volunteers, and other guests were helpful, friendly, and very knowledgeable about the wildlife, and prepared to go on a hike! Would love to come back to visit again sometime. Here are some photos from... More

I fell in love with this place right when we arrive on the boat. The staff members were extremely nice and very welcoming. The cooking was great. The building itself was very cozy. The showers were very clean and refreshing after a long hot day. The rooms were spacious and the beds were comfortable. After the second day there I felt... More

We arrived at Campanario the day after Christmas after flying into San Jose, taking a car to Sierpe, and spending the night there. Up to this point, we had already had quite an adventure, so we weren't sure what to expect. Campanario is truly a treasure. You need to go with expectation of doing LOTS of hiking - even to... More

I was there with my Biology class and it was a trip that I will never ever forget. If you're ready for a nature adventure, this is the right trip for you! The food is amazing, the housing perfect for the setting, the hammocks overlooking the ocean a dream and I've learned so much from all the staff there. I... More

I can't wait to return, with my family and another high school group. Rustic and perfect are the two words that come to mind. I love the lack of electricity and outdoor showers and sharing the rainforest hikes with monkeys and toucans and crabs and snakes. From the beach landing to the cottages for sleeping to the food to the... More

Stayed here four days with a high school group in April, 2014 - I will be returning with my family, hopefully this summer. Nancy embodies the spirit of the place with her energy and enthusiasm for every aspect of ecology, the rainforest, the ocean and the intertidal zone. The accommodations are rustic but clean and comfortable and the views from... More

I stayed here with seven fellow students about two weeks ago. It was pure Heaven. Helping out and getting to know the people and surrounding rain forest was unforgettable. I hope to return someday to this truly magical place. I had the best time of my life here.

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Campanario Biological Station is a remote environmental education center for students, families, and those adventurous individuals who would like to disconnect from "civilization". We offer the simple comforts of life - plenty of good food, clean facilities, and comfortable sleeping arrangements. Jungle living generally requires a change of habits. The sun rises early, and most everyone is up with the sun, be this for bird watching, for taking a swim at dawn, or for just having coffee on the front porch to watch the splendid colors over the ocean. Campanario is off-the-grid in most every way: no roads, no national system of electricity or water service, no mail delivery or trash pick-up, no internet service, no washing machines, TVs or air conditioners, etc. Etc., Living at Campanario is generally a life style change for most. We generally adapt to the environment rather than adapting the environment to suit us. We are doing everything possible to keep our ecological footprint small. ... more   less
