The hotel was very nice. We had a larger room, and everything was fine. Wifi worked well. The $40 deposit for the TV remote was strange, though. Anyone who would steal a TV remote would steal the TV, which wasn't bolted down!

Dear xzmattzx: First of all I want to thank you for choosing Hotel Vesuvio for your lodging accommodation. We are very pleased with your comment and also for sharing your good experience at Hotel Vesuvio with TripAdvisors readers. The guest satisfaction is our highest priority in Hotel Vesuvio. Regarding your comment about the TV remote control, I am pleased to clear it for you. We do not requiere a deposit or any money, what we do, is ask the customer to sign a form, in which he/she agrees to pay $40 in case he or she does not give back the tv control when checking out and, only if this happen a charge will be made. Sorry for the misunderstanding. We hope you would stay with us next time you come to Costa Rica. Hope to see you both soon! Laura Jimenez General Manager

This was probably the worst hotel I stayed in during a six country trip through Central America. I was in room 218 where there was a ceiling fan but no air con. In the tiny bathroom you had to almost climb over the toilet to get to the shower and you could sit on the toilet and clean your teeth at the same time and there was nowhere to put anything in the bathroom. The water pipes for the whole hotel ran along the ceiling of this room and when ever anyone turned on a tap in the hotel it made a terrible noise. When I complained to the manager he just shrugged his shoulders. I eventually changed rooms with our tour leader and went to room 215. The water in the shower here had sudden bursts of hot and cold and was quite dangerous. Once again there was nowhere to put anything in the bathroom. There were no power points in the room so you could not charge your phone etc and the internet was very patchy anyway. There was a central light fitting containing three globes, but only one globe was functioning so it was impossible to read in the room. There was a safe, but no key or instructions on how to use it. The walls of both rooms were paper thin and you could clearly hear your neighbours. Both rooms were upstairs and even when I had located the light over the stairs it was only one naked globe and very dark at night. When we checked in we were given a remote control for the TV and told we would be fined if we didn't return it. I returned it immediately and said I was not interested in watching Spanish TV. The very basic breakfast was served in a garage next to the hotel. Getting there if it rained would be interesting. The only good thing about this hotel was that it was within walking distance of the excellent Cafe Mundo.

It's a very basic old hotel that's a place to lay your head and sleep. They do have a breakfast in the morning located in an out building behind the hotel. They do not have air conditioning located in each room. But they do vent each room into the hallway that allows for one air conditioning unit to cool each of the rooms somewhat. The staff are very nice people and the prices are very reasonable for the budget minded traveler. Near the down town entertainment areas and they do allow guests to stay in your room. If there was no other option in the area I would not hesitate to stay here again.

We stayed at this hotel for 1 night and it was a very good low cost option for four traveling students. The staff were fantastic and the restaurant food was amazing. The hotels location was perfect! Just outside from the busy city but it was also only a 20 minute walk to get to the national theatre and the museums plus the central market! I would recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a low cost option that was clean safe and had a great location.

We've stayed here a few times in the past, (see my past review) I will update. Hotel Vesuvio is a small place, the rooms are not all that big, but adequate. They are though, very neat and clean. The primary reason we first stayed here, was because they are 'pet friendly ', and we were traveling with our cat. For an additional $25 your pet can stay in your room. The reason for our visit this time was to do a little shopping and a romantic dinner. The central location in San Jose is ideal for arrival or departure. Your stay comes with next morning free 'continental' breakfast. The staff is very accommodating and bilingual. All in all, I would rate it as a fair deal at a fair price. If you do decide to stay here, and I recommend it, try a romantic dinner at a nearby restaurant called 'Cafe Mundo', (read my review of 'Cafe Mundo') ask about it at the desk, they are willing to make reservations for anything you may need. I will be returning to stay at 'Hotel Vesuvio '.

We found this hotel to be quaint and clean. The rooms were small but it was suitable for a short stay. I would not recommend this place for any duration. We could hear every other person in the hotel and the constantly opened windows allowed the birds outside to wake us up. It should be mentioned, lots of Costa Rican hotels are like this and aside from going to high end places, this is what you are going to get. I found the service to be great and everything suitable for our stay but the wifi was spotty at best. My recommendation would be to get out of San Jose and see the beauty Costa Rica is known for!

My wife and I needed to catch a morning flight. We were traveling with our cat and we were looking for a hotel that accepts pets. Although there is an additional $20 fee for a pet. We found this hotel quite accommodating.
