I only stayed for two nights but I was impressed with what I experienced. Check in with Joseph was excellent. He quickly realised we would be going out early on the days we were staying with the hotel and arranged a good boxed breakfast for us with a croissant, juice, fruit and a cookie. The room was a little small but very comfortable. The bed was excellent, the TV has international channels, a safe, good toiletries in the bathroom, large wardrobe, and excellent Wifi. There is a free minibar with some snacks and soft drinks but the range is a little limited. I asked for the regular coke to be swapped for Coke Zero but this didn’t happen. The bathroom had a shower bath and plenty of towels. All the staff we met were friendly and most had excellent English. We had dinner in the restaurant one night, the food and service was really good, attentive but not overpowering, but the atmosphere in the restaurant is quite formal which may put off some diners. There were some shortcomings to the hotel, the room didn’t have a full length mirror in it which would be useful when getting ready, the location is not near much apart from another restaurant. Breakfast times are too late, 7am until 10 am. We were on trips at 6-45am both days so could not have breakfast which was a real shame. The air conditioning I found to be underwhelming meaning the room got quite stuffy and warm at times. The mini bar was not restocked during our stay, we were told it would be, and there are lots of stairs, so if you have heavy luggage or mobility issues, this may need to be mentioned at the time of booking to ensure you get a room that will meet your needs. The hotel does have some nice period features, particularly the restaurant/bar area and some nice small gardens. Overall a good stay but with some small changes it could have been special.

I cannot recommend Hotel Grano de Oro enough. For starters, it is such a charming and unique hotel. We stayed there for a few days on our way to Quepos, and we stayed in a big family group. Diana Torres at the front desk was AMAZING to work with. She emailed me many times to be sure that our reservations were correct and to ensure that we had enough rooms for our group of 23 travelers (11 adults and 12 kids). While that is no easy feat, she managed it and had it organized with ease. We loved eating the delicious breakfast in the courtyard every morning--it was so beautiful and magical. It felt like a little oasis in a big city. We loved our rooms, they were very clean and well maintained. We also used the fitness center and hot tubs. I would hands down recommend this establishment to any group--big or small--and especially families. It is very family friendly and all of the staff are so kind and patient and efficient. We loved this hotel and would stay here again in a heartbeat if we visit San Jose.

Grano de Oro is a stylish boutique hotel in central San Jose and a perfect choice for your first or last night in Costa Rica. The hotel has an elegant colonial feel with excellent service to match. We stayed in a Superior Room featuring its own "garden" which gave the room a really nice feel. The restaurant is superb and breakfast in the open-air courtyard at the centre of the hotel was perfect. The hotel is close enough to walk to the Central Market if you want to see a bit of central San Jose.

Hotel Grano de Oro in San Jose, Costa Rica, offers an excellent stay in a beautifully restored mansion. While the ambiance may lack some charm, the rooms are impeccably appointed with modern amenities. The restaurant serves exceptional cuisine, though it can be pricey. Service is attentive and professional, ensuring guests have a memorable and comfortable experience.

My wife and I stayed at Grano De Oro for 2 nights when heading home from Costa Rica. Firstly, a warning to anyone thinking of spending a day or two exploring San Jose. DONT! Unless you love a visit or two to museums, there are no redeeming factors. The city is what can only be described as the worst we have ever visited on our travels. I won't go into detail as this is a hotel review. Based on the above, we would have only stayed one night at The Grano De Oro. The hotel is stunning with a level of service to match. We only stayed in a basic room (number 1) due to this being the end of a long trip and we assumed that most of the day would be spent exploring. Instead we spent most of our time on the premises. The food served in the restaurant was some of the best we had experienced (again with a service to match) during our trip. My wife and I dined here for both nights of our stay. An unsolicited shout out to Alberto our waiter who was just amazing. I can't remember having better service in any of London's Michelin restaurants. Both professional and engaging. The only criticism of the hotel is the noise. The rooms aren't particularly well acoustically insulated. By the very nature of the hotel primarily used by travellers in transit, there is a lot of movement early in the morning due to people heading for the airport. We would both return to The Grano Oro if we were passing thru again but would make sure we packed earplugs.

We stayed in this hotel at the end of our stay in Costa Arica before flying home. It was so much better than the hotel we had stayed at when we arrived. This converted Tropical Victorian Mansion house has loads of character and has been sympathetically modernised. I loved the black and white historical photos along the corridor walls. Staff were friendly, rooms and beds were really comfortable. Enjoyed half an hour on the jacuzzi deck before dinner! Wish we’d found this on the way out!!

My husband and I stayed here for three nights in mid-January. It’s a beautiful historic hotel just outside of downtown San Jose. We had fresh fruit in our double room when we arrived and the room was large and clean. It was on the ground floor, off a beautiful garden courtyard. Breakfast was included and one ordered off a menu with lots of choice; there was no buffet. Over the three breakfasts the food was well presented and quite decent, though not spectacular. Service was also variable and quite “relaxed”. Dinner was offered in the same dining room which was very attractive with both an open-air terrace and covered spaces. It was about a 10-15 minute taxi ride from the hotel to the Teatro Nacional because of traffic and cost about US$5-$7, well worth it. The neighbourhood seemed safe and is largely residential but there were a number of restaurants within walking distance, and we had a superb meal of premium beef tenderloin at the Tierra Gaucha Parrilla Argentina (Argentinian Grill) across the street. We would stay here again.

The staff treats you like are very special and they are helpful and willing to do what you need. The room we had was very roomy and very comfortable. The restaurant at the hotel is top notch and the atmosphere and decor make you feel like you are a major city. If you can stay there.

We arrived early evening after a long flight and opted for the airport transfer organised through the hotel (which I would recommend). Perfect for a night before heading off to explore. Good clean room and atmospheric open courtyard restaurant Wonderful staff.

What a beautiful hotel! Fantastic in every way. Beautifully decorated, quaint rooms, and an amazing dining room. Excellent food and superb staff. Close enough to Downtown to walk if you’d like, but far enough away to be quiet. Highly recommend a stay here!
