Due to an unexpected change of plan we got a last minute room here and it was a fine base for exploring the city, but there were a few negatives which means I don't think we would return there. Positives: The Nicaraguan mother and daughter who between them seemed to do almost everything were both friendly and helpful, especially the mother. The location was fine, walking distance from both the city centre and the Sabana park. We had a superior room which was huge and had a fridge and reliable hot water in the bathroom. There are loads of old books in English which are available for swapping or just taking. Negatives: The hotel itself has seen better days and in my view was overpriced for what we got (though as I said we booked last minute). Breakfast is the same every day and although you get unlimited fruit and huge portions, the other food and drink was poor quality, I didn't even like the coffee which has not happened before or since for me in Central America! There is a roof terrace and pool but when we were there (in February, supposedly the best time of year) it was too cold to make much use of them and the water looked pretty dirty. When we had laundry they wanted to charge $20 for one small bag, when I expressed incredulity at this price they immediately went down to $15 but still way too expensive.

The hotel smells a bit musty but is clean. It has a nice lobby area a small, clean pool. The wifi was pretty good (better than most other Costa Rican hotels that I've stayed in). The shower was good. The bed was decently comfortable but I hated the pillows. I could hear people outside my room at all hours of the night. I liked the location because it was not too far from downtown and I felt comfortable walking around the area alone.

We stayed here for one week in one of the superior rooms. The staff is super friendly and the hotel is very clean however the rooms and furniture are old and dated....very much in need of an upgrade. Good location but overpriced for a rundown hotel. Plenty of better places to stay in this price range...wouldn't recommend it.

We stayed for two nights at the start of a trip through Costa Rica. The airport taxi drivers didn't seem to have heard of it but found it without any trouble on seeing the address. Staff are friendly and helpful but don't expect them to speak much English. Our room was basic and had some exciting wiring on the TV and shower. Both, however, worked fine. We arrived back at the hotel on a Sunday evening and found that we were struggling to find somewhere to eat. Being too tight to get a taxi, we wondered the streets until finding a little pizza place. I had imagined that finding food nearby would be a bit easier in San Jose. The pool and hot tub looked nice but we didn't use them as we were short of time having had flight delays and early starts. The rooftop terrace area is very nice on a sunny day, and the breakfast (a Costa Rican rice and beans affair....why don't we all do that?!) is well worth having. One thing to be aware of is that (certainly in our room) noise travelled very easily. We were unfortunate enough to be sharing the hotel with what I think was a large school trip of 15-16 year olds, who ran around, slamming doors and bouncing wheelie-suitcases down the stairs through most of the night and early the following morning. The walls seemed to do little to stop the noise from any direction! Having said that, when the other guests were not being noisy the traffic noises from outside were not bad. Nice enough, basic hotel. Good for the price. Major drawbacks are lack of places to eat closeby (on a Sunday night, at least) and noise from other rooms.

Nice place to set up a base for exploring San Jose. Walking distance to La Sabana park, or short ($3-5) cab ride to Paseo Colón, market, and city center. Funky, charming, rambling place that has been added onto over the years, this is a calm clean hotel with friendly staff. Free breakfast; check out the pool and rooftop eating area/patio. Recommended for groups or single family visits.

Stayed for a week (for dental work next door). Alexia, Jeffery and staff were very pleasant/professional. (Older building, not the Ritz) but great pool/jacuzzi and a muy agradable every morning on the rooftop overlooking mountains and fauna. muchas gracias. Will be back in a few month. -Paul

this was a good room for the price. the beds are comfortable, but the pillows could be better. THe pool and Hot tub are both nice. the first night, we had cold water in the shower. We didn't tell the front desk. In the morning, after we told the front desk, within 30 minutes we had hot water. Guess we should have mentioned it the night before. The included breakfast is typical CR. Very good. They also have a flat roof for sun bathing, if you have some free time. mi amega at the front desk was very helpful

On arrival, I thought I was arriving at a crime scene. Three police cars with lights aflashing sat out front. But it turns out that Cacts is neighbors with not one, but 2 police stations. And, for whatever reason, the police in San Jose like to have their lights flashing at all times. Always nice to have the police nearby when you're in a strange city. As far as Hotel Cacts, Alexa always makes you feel you're a special person. The rooms are comfortable. The complimentary breakfast is quite good with plenty of fresh fruit. The cook will cook your eggs to your liking and provide some excellent gallo pinto. In San Jose's heat, the pool is refreshing. Afterwards, take a beer up to the roof and enjoy the views of downtown San Jose. WiFi reception was a bit spotty. But that could have been because I didn't understand how they had it set up. Ask the front desk to explain it to you.

Elexca (I believe her name was) was a very nice and friendly lady!Stayed the night here. Looked like a nice clean hotel from the outside. Room was decent, walked in the bathroom. shower door wouldn't close, there was rust all over the shower and mold on the ceiling. Not to mention the price for the room was so not worth it! I guarantee I will never come back here.

I stayed in Cacts Hotel my first night in San jose. Hotel is very pretty pretense when you areive but the rooms leave a lot to be desired. Needs remodeling. At 8 am on Saturday, May 30th, they proceeded to performe builiding maintenance that consisted of intense hammering that could be awoke me. When i went to the lobby to complain, the "owner" was rude and insisted that people have regual lives in Costa Rica and that noise was acceptable at that time on a Saturday. She was un-accomindating and insisted the noise continue on. The hammering continued until I left with a migraine. To the owner of this location, yes people have regular lives, but the people that pay for hotels are normally tourist like myself. Now I understand why your hotel is empty. I am packing my bags and finding a better place to stay for the rest of my visit. NEVERAGAIN will I stay here.
