Calling this place a B&B is a bit rich - it behaves and feels like a hostel in every way. The DIY kitchen is loaded up with unwashed dishes and there are young tourists draped all over and wandering around barefoot, or talking late into the night, and I don't mean in the vibey "happening" sense. The building is downright... More

Very close to mercado central and priced to not break the bank. Awesome and very helpful staff. Continental breakfast was really good as well. Definitely would stay here again if in San Jose for a night. Note: San Jose is a super loud city so expect to hear beeping and honking all night.

This was a walk in booking. It was in a pretty ok location near a park and not far from train station. However the trains are pretty noisy when In the hotel. The room was a bit on the dark side and was basic. But it had 2 fans and was spacious. Can't complain in terms of the price paid.... More

Very good location ; close to: the Californian neighbourhood , Museum of Jade and supermarkets . We were expecting a cute pension/bb but we arrived in a filthy place where the kitchen smelled like rotten food , the bathrooms were full of hair and had no hot water. I originally booked at La Cuesta to share fun moments with travelers... More

This cute old house definitely has a lot of potential and is in a good location, but overall it is a definite fail. The fan only works when the light is on, windows are painted shut, breakfast is stale cereal (that isn't even ready on time), and for everyone opting for the shared bathroom option, spend the extra $10. The... More

Clean place but the double bed in a private room was a bit raggedy and the room was dark. The small window opened to the street so the noise was of loud trucks. The common area and architecture was amazing with huge windows. The shared bathroom was clean and the shower was cold but had good pressure. The breakfast was... More

A basic guest house with friendly staff and a nice vibe. Unfortunately there is next to no sound proofing and you will hear and feel every person that walks past or says anything near by. Pros: good kitchen, friendly people, good staff Cons: dark rooms, cold showers and really loud at night

If you want a clean hostel with big rooms in a good location then I would recommend this hostel! It is situated less than a five minute walk from the city centre (national theatre, shops & restaurants). There is not much of an atmosphere and is more hotel like than a hostel but this was fine for us as we... More

We stayed here for three nights. The place is in a great location, the rooms very clean and the shared bathrooms clean and fine. Staff were friendly, especially David. There is some noise at night (from the road or people getting up to use the bathrooms) but that's true of all places in the city. We found it decent and... More

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
Built in 1920, first Bed and Breakfast of the capital of Costa Rica, San Jose, it was once home and art gallery to a bevy of local and expatriate artists, including Otto Apuy, Diedre Hyde, and Guillermo Conte, as well as other poets, writers and filmmakers, a place where artists and authors gathered together in its past time. With its handcrafted classic wood frame structure of the entrance and the interior design like colonial style mosaic tile floor of early 19th century, you can see the traces of Costa Rican history and art trough the building. The hotel is located at downtown San Jose,a nice and safe neighborhood, surrounded by great variety of fine restaurants, main bus stations, grocery stores, 3-5 minutes walking distance. We are recommened by mayor travel guides, Lonely Planet,Frommers, Fordor, Moon Book, Let's go. If you are looking for budget and comfort stay, we are your great choice in downtown San Jose. ... more   less

“The rooms close to the computer place and lounge could be noise, if people talks loud. I was at the room 14 (female dorm) just beside at the computer place, and one night I could not sleep well, because one guy was awake at the computer and all the time he was moving the chair, walking around and the floor is made by wood, so the noise was loud!”
